614.0. ">>> PCM SCAN PROFILES <<<" by 56525::FLYNN () Wed Feb 15 1995 17:45

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PCM SCAN PROFILES <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    				  ANYBODY?

I know this topic has the attention of many folks...

We would like to collect all PCM Scan Profiles, not currently posted
in this conference, which have been created by users of the product.
The intention is to consolidate all available profiles and somehow
make them readily available for our customers to utilize.

If you or your customers have created PCM Scan Profiles and are willing
to share them, please forward them to MUZICK::FLYNN. Once a library
has been established, we will post instructions on how you can access
    a central profile repository.

Your help and support is greatly appreciated!

    Regards,

    Doreen,

just an idea. I believe that there is a POLYCENTER page on the Web. Why
not post the scan profiles there? Also, put in an adress where
customers can mail them via Internet.

614.2Is there a pointer to what you've collected?LOCH::KNAUERMon Mar 13 1995 23:2619
    Doreen,

How are you doing on collecting all the scan profiles? I'm currently
in the middle of a large PCM implementation and I'd like to be able to
provide the customer with a fairly comprehensive set of standard event
and scan definitions for their environment. They know Digital has done
this hundreds of times before so they don't see the need to re-invent
the wheel. I agree. They're paying us a lot of consulting $$$$ as it
is. It would be nice to "spend" their consulting $$$$ to take them a
step further rather than starting from scratch. opg::cm$doc:*.port
appears to be a good start; but isn't there more (especially DECnet,
    HSCs/HSJs, and security in general)?

Please post a pointer to the location of all the good stuff you've
    collected.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Can I second .2, I'm in exactly the same position with a fairly
large implementation and any scans profiles would be very useful sooner
    rather than later !

    	Thanks,

 From note 6.0...

I had sent in 3 scan port files sometime ago. One was for the LPS and another
was for the ACB. What happened to them?

A few comments re your present SCAN PROFILE collection

o the PCM_SCAN_HSZ10.PORT is not a port file but a VCS config file

o there are 2 profiles for the same product
		PCM_SCAN_DECNSR.PORT
		PCM_SCAN_POLY_NETWORKER.PORT

o these 2 profiles are essentially the same
		PCM_SCAN_UNIX.PORT
		PCM_SCAN_ULTRIX.PORT
all someone did is change the CLASS and SUBSYSTEM fields, having
	  both just leads to confusion

How does one question the contents of a particular port file?
Do we focus problems thru you, For example in the PCM_SCAN_VMSV6 file, the
 event PAGECRIT_V6 includes an "I" before the %SYSTEM-W-PAGECRIT text. I don't
believe that should be there. I think it actually prevents the event from ever
 firing (event OPCCRASH_V6 is similiar)

Also the VMSV6 scan profile contains the UAFMOD event. I can appreciate that
it's debatable what events should be included in any particular profile and I
would be the first to suggest it is better to include events than not but some
events fail the usefullness-vs-noise test. The UAFMOD event is one such.
This event can generate thousands of events.

There are a number of scan profiles in the "Inventory" that configure the
scan profiles into segmented blocks. This is a throwback to the VCS days.
For example, the VMSV6 profile contains...
    SCAN: _SCAN$VMSV6_1
    SCAN: _SCAN$VMSV6_2
Of course with Console Manager, only one scan block is required, ie
    _SCAN$VMSV6
Is someone going to be responsible for reformatting?

How about including versions or date codes in the header of the port file

The AXP7000.PORT file is not accessable (no priv). Is this intentional?

614.8Revised 7000 (& 10000) Scan Profile52336::STRATMANPeter Stratman @VBOThu Jul 27 1995 12:05487
The AXP 7000 profile in Doreen's directory didn't work. It also contains some
VMS-specific stuff which I prefer to keep in separate profiles.

So here is a console-message-only version which imports without errors.

BTW, I just took the existing text which was in the profile, and do not know
 how good that is...

 Peter.

There is a new set of scan profiles on SNOFS1""::

DIGITAL_UNIX_7000_2000.PORT

This .PORT file contains :
a re-worked and tidied up version of that provided by Mark Yates
(removing duplications and condensing SCAN profiles).

A new POLYCENTER Networker scan profile with 4 new events

A Scan profile for the KZPSA (very primitive, but a start)

A SCan profile for the AXP2000/2100 (Again primitive, but a start)

Allthough the original .PORT file came from a customer, I've worked on it quite
a bit since then and haven't had the opportunity to test it - no PCM system!
There may be some minor errors. If you use it, and find some - let me know.

Enjoy

614.12Where are files from .11?60591::GALLAGHERTMon Jan 08 1996 21:2413
    Folks,

Does anyone know an accessible version of the profiles mentioned in
    .11?

There are files with similar names at
    MUZICK::USER$DISK:[FLYNN.PCM.SCAN_PROFILES]PCM_AXP7000_10000.PORT and
KZPSA.PORT but the file protection prevents them being copied. Could
the file protections be changed please so we can see what these are?

    thanks,
    Tony

Protection now set correctly, sorry for the delay. I'm planning
to move the profiles to some place on PCMSVR soon...

For you "scan"ning enjoyment there is a new scan profile for the
HSX family of storageworks controllers. It has been placed
    in PCMSVR::PCM_SCAN_PROFILES:HSXFAM.PORT

Thanks very much to the Storageworks controller engineering group
    for providing this information!!

Could the HP-UX profile, and a SUNOS profile (if one exists) be placed in the
library please.

Next reply is a DECnet/OSI scan profile I've written. I'd put it
in PCMSVR but it's protected against write access

The profile is rather large (230+ events).

Brian,
As we install our new AXP 2100 and 1000's I am setting out to add these
systems to our PolyCenter Console Manager.
I spent some time on DSNlink and on the WWW page from Digital Equipment
Corporation, and was surprised to learn that DEC did not provide a downloadable
hardware profile for these systems (that I could find). As you are probably
aware, searching through the hardware manuals for the 'interesting' error
messages will not necessarily yield the exact error messages that will be
displayed on the console either.
Please direct me to the source for this information or suggest to the
PolyCenter support team that this information is easier for them to collect. I
realize that they will not know everything that might interest me on the console
output nevertheless they should have a good idea what common events on computer
systems that a system manager would wish to be made aware of.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this matter. You may contact
me if required at (403)691-4241.

Sincerely,

Francis A. Ferguson

    Brian,
A good portion of the scan profiles referenced by this note are
available on the OpenVMS Freeware CD included with the OpenVMS
distribution. Work is being done to build a customer accessible Web
page which will be reguallry maintained.

    Hi,

I've got a customer who has just upgraded his system to an Alpha Turbo
    Laser 8400.

I'm looking for the scan profiles for this new system. I've checked
this note and looked in PCMSVR::PCM_SCAN_PROFILES:, however I couldn't
    find one.

Anyone got a pointer to this.

The systems in question are no longer Digital assets. They were
transferred to CA with the sale of PCM etc. You can get the profiles
off the OpenVMS Freeware CD included with either 6.2 or 7.0.

If the folks at CA can provide me with a disk, I can host the kits
and scan profiles along with the notes conference.

Dan,

that's interesting. I think, maybe, those scan profiles should not have gone. They were not developed as part of
the product (some of them) and so really belong to digital (Services). I don't think all those scan profiles were
on the CD's were they?

    Shaun,
I wouldn't exactly call them gone. When I can get a disk
I'll load them up onto CSC32. Right now I cannot even
order off of DIAL until we start the new fiscal
year. Most of the profiles in the directory
were on the V2.0 Freeware CD.

if you anonymous ftp to CRITON.SNO.DEC.COM (16.171.144.186) you will find a directory called PCM.
In here is a file called VISION.PORT

This file was a tidied up version of that provided by Mark Yates with some new additional NSR
events.

Hope that helps

	Hi,

I "import" the vision.port file and I have the following errors when exiting
from console editor :

Scan '_SCAN$POLYCENTER_NETWORKER' includes event 'nsr recover waiting for tape'
which is not in database

Main Scan '_SCAN$UNIX_GENERIC' includes Scan 'OSCint UNIX' which is not in

What is wrong here ?

614.32pointer to vision.port given in .29SOS6::MENICACCITue Oct 01 1996 05:4638
	Dan,

I found the pointer in this topic (.29).

The first error is due to a tipo :

ADD_SCAN:
    NAME: _SCAN$POLYCENTER_NETWORKER
INFO: Scan profile for POLYCENTER Networker Save and Restore (DECnsr)
    EVENT: nsr_mount_1
    EVENT: nsr_mount_2

    EVENT: nsr_savegroup_aborted
    EVENT: nsr_savegroup_fail
    EVENT: nsr_savegroup_ok
    EVENT: nsr_savegroup_starting
    EVENT: nsr_saveset_toobig
    EVENT: nsr_tape_3
EVENT: nsr revover waiting for tape
               ^^^^^^^

The correct word is recover not revover.

I don't know the reason of the second error, tipo again or incomplete file (no
scan OSCint UNIX defined in vision.port).

Do you know another pointer to a file.port which knows about digital unix and
alpha systems ?

re .30

There is no OSCint UNIX scan profile. sorry about that.

re .33

Look on the OpenVMS freeware CD. Other than that, no there is no central repository.
Also, Digital gave all the ones we, not engineering, to CA. Ahh, don't you love it
when we give away our intellectual property so we have no added benefit!

Just as a rather late word of warning, all of the scan profiles, ALMOST
without exception have had some error or another. Importing them

is usually a line or entire section missing. Fixing it has at most
been an issue of cut-n-paste, but it's a nuisance to have to do it.
Usually, the culprit has been a section that has been deleted, then
added back in, but not defined first (the terms are rather general, as
I don't have exact syntax in front of me). Defining that particular
part of the scan before adding it back in has worked quite well.

I will say this. While the scans that I have used have undoubtedly
been developed by someone at some cost, they've been free to me and my
customer. Using them, in general, has really cost much less than what
it would have cost to develop them entirely on our own. For that, I am
    very thankful.

It's great that the scans are available on the VMS distribution, but
what about customers who use Digital UNIX? The scans are not available
on that distribution, or at least not that I can find. Is there a
    pointer to them somewhere?

    Thanks,
    Terry

They aren't necessarily on the VMS distribution CD but rather the
Freeware CD included with the distribution. If there is a
Freeware CD with the DUnix distribution then I would
    check there first.

    Hello all,
You will now find scan profiles at CSC32::PCM$SCANS:. The
conference notice has been updated to reflect the location of kits,
docs and scans. Note that these scans will be on the upcoming
maintenance release of PCM and are from the 2nd beta kit of that
release. You will find some pleasant surprises here including the
long awaited Digital Unix scan profile.

    Regards,
       Dan
