918.0. "SLOW PCM V1.6" by 58633::FERRO (Rick Ferro) Wed Aug 09 1995 13:37

Further to note 896, PCM V1.6 seems to be extremely slow and it is not
just the editor that behaves that way.
I created a screen with all the systems at one site under the c3
interface. Even when I click on my drawing it takes forever for the
screen to gain focus. It has nothing to do with vertical lines since
what seems to be taking a long time to re-focus are the scroll bars and
    the buttons in the bottom.

Another thing the customer does not like is the fact that I cannot minimize
the screen in question even though, the minimize button is there.
Furthermore, the c3 interface screen cannot be popped into the foreground
nor can the site screen be pushed into the background.

These are all important issues since the in the end I will have to
create two more graphical screens for the other two sites and they will
    have to navigate between them.

I am using the system account with a pgflquo set to 40K and a pagefile
of 200K. I am the only user on the workstation which is a VAX 4000 -
    90. I have DECps running on the workstation to try and find out the
source of the problem "SLOWNESS". I have also looked at it with the
monitor utility and the CPU does not get max'd out from by minimizing
the site (graphics) screen nor do I see and increase on memory usage
    (80 MB) or disk I/O.

The only thing I can think of is that the paging possibly goes up,
though DECps does not report it as a problem. For the evaluation of PCM
V1.6 I'm using only one disk. I will try to put the paging file on a
different disk to see what happens. I don't anticipate great things.

I need some help here, I do not have the manuals for PCM V1.6 except
for the Installation one and the Release Notes. However, there is
nothing in the Installation Manual regarding special parameters for PCM
other than the necessary global pages. Most of the VCS V1.4 settings in
    modparams.dat are still in effect.

If I try PCM V1.6 on an ALPHA I have to be able to justify the
migration by showing that the CPU is running out of capacity which,
here does not seem to be the case.

Do you have veritcal lines though? I have see the exact same symptoms
as you when vertical lines are present.

I beg your pardon? You cannot iconify the C3 display? I have never
experienced this problem at all. I can use the Minimize pick from the
Window manager menu brought up from the "dash" button on the upper left
corner or the "dot" button in the upper right corner. This is a
function of the window manager and so far your the only site that has
    ever reported this.

    >Furthermore, the c3 interface screen cannot be popped into the foreground
    >nor can the site screen be pushed into the background.

Again, all of these are functions of the window manager.

This really sounds like the vertical line problem. If you have any,
    delete them.

Thanks for your prompt answer. However, how can you have a diagram of a
site without vertical lines to connect systems to the Ethernet/FDDI
backbone cable snaking around the picture on the screen.

In fact I used the diagram they had on the VCS as my source of
inspiration when I re did the diagram for the PCM.

What I cannot iconify is the screen containing the diagram which itself
minimizes to an icon on the C3 display. I hope you get what I mean.

On the C3 display one can have more than one "site diagram" icon so
that more than one site, supposedly can be managed ?

It is the site diagram screen that I cannot minimize from its iconify
button. The button is there but no dice, it don't work.

What the customer wants to do is change focus between sites.
Unfortunately when a particular "site diagram" is displayed it pops in
front of the C3 screen and won't minimize other than by double clicking
on it's icon on the C3 screen.

As far as PCM performance goes can you state some reccommended values
for some of the parameters it uses so I can at least be certain from
that point of view that all that can be done has been done.
