793.0. "license issue" by KETJE::STEUKERS () Wed Jun 07 1995 12:57

Hi,

Customers here in Belgium start slowly to migrate with their management
platforms from OpenVMS VAX towards OpenVMS AXP.

Most of them started with VCS on VAX and could use the VAXCLUSTER-CONSOLE
license without any problem when migrating to PCM, still on VAX.

One customer, using its VCS license on OpenVMS AXP however claims this does not
work. I have not seen the customer VCS license, but suspect the fact that most
licenses for AXP machines have the OPITIONS attribute ALPHA, which is not there
for the old VCS licenses destined for OpenVMS VAX HW.

I verified some "internal" POLY-CONSOLEMGR licenses and they don't have the
APLPHA options attribute.

What should be done in order to get this customer going on PCM for OpenVSM AXP?
Please reply "asaPp" as this customer is in the process of migrating and cannot
wait!

Erik.

793.1concurrent vs. capacity PAKsICEKRM::KUNGWed Jun 07 1995 22:5622
    Erik:

    Does your customer have a CAPACITY or CONCURRENT licenses for VCS?

    Concurrent licenses do not distinguish between hardware types,
    therefore the OPTION=ALPHA is disregarded and not taken in during
    the LMF check. This is why I would like to see your customer's
    license PAK. Because the LMF name is the same between the two
    license types, the other way to figure out if the license is capacity
    type is by looking at the AVAILABILITY TABLE, and if there is a
    non-zero and non-blank value in it. If the license if concurrent,
    the ACTIVITY TABLE would have a non-zero non-blank value.

    Capacity licenses DO distinquish between Alpha and non-Alpha
    hardware. Your customer, if they have capacity licenses, and they
    are under service/warranty, need to trade in their VCS capacity
    PAK for a PCM capacity PAK (and can do so for free). The LMF name
    will still be the same, just that the OPTION=ALPHA will be there.
    The part number for the capacity license on OpenVMS AXP is QL-2PCA9-AA,
    to generate the correct PAK.

    Hope this helps.
793.2PCM concurrent licenceBIS1::WATTINNEThu Jun 08 1995 11:5711
    Hello,

    Erik is away for 3 days so that is why I am answering to you.
    Our customer has a Concurrent licence QL-V01**-3B.
    I will try to get a copy of his licence to check what are the
    information on the activity code, and so on...
    Many thanks to help us.

    To add to what Rae said,

    See if the PAKS have CONSTANT = 100 in the Activity field and 100 or
    more in the UNITS field. This PAK will work fine. I've tested it.
    BEWARE - you will get an OPCOM message indicating that POLYCENTER
    Console Manager is not licensed fo use on this node *EVEN IF YOU
    HAVE VALID VCS PAKS of the type listed above*. I've had more than one
    customer be misled by the error such that they assumed the product was
    unlicensed when in deed it was. I had to make them issue a CONSOLE
    CONNECT command to one of the nodes in order to convince them it was
    working. They hadn't even bothered to try it before logging a call.

    And, if the customer has purchased more than one concurrent license,
    they need to register them all at the same time, BEFORE issuing
    a LOAD command. Else LMF will only pick up one concurrent license
    and allow a single connect.

    Seeing the license would help too. Thanks Patricia.

793.5Really for free ??ESSB::PSCULLYTue Jun 13 1995 13:2014
    Rae,

    In note 793.1 you mention that customers can trade in a VCS PAK 'for
    free' and move to PCM on AXP. Normally, we manage such migrations using
    the software trade-in programme where currently the 75%/25% rule
    applies. This rules states that we offer 75% credit based on the price
    of the old license OFF the price of the new.

    Is there some pre-approved free migration plan for VCS/PCM ? If so,
    can you please post details here.

    Regards,
    Pat.

793.6Upgrade rather than Migration.ZEDAR::simonSimon Jackson 830 x3879Tue Jun 13 1995 14:5310
Hi,
From what I remember the reason for the zero cost migration of
licenses was that PCM 1.5 was classed as an upgrade to VCS rather
than a replacement i.e. it took on the UPI of VCS rather than a
new product. Therefore a customer with maintenance is supplied PCM
under the terms of the contract. this was not extended to a customer
who was moving to a UN*X platform as this was not considered an
upgrade under the terms of the contract.

Cheers Simon...
