726.0. "PCM deleting /bin softlink?" by WOTVAX::YATESM (Soft, Strong, and very very long...) Thu May 11 1995 18:24

    Dear all,

Has anyone seen this particular problem before with PCM and OSF/1? If
you have then pelase reply so that we can get as much information as
    possible on any potential problem.

I have been working on a customer installation and on three separate
occasions this problem has occured. It seems to happen when PCM does
not execute a startup/shutdown or reconfigure properly.

What happens is that the symbolic link for /bin ( /bin -> /usr/bin ) is
lost, and as a result things stop working. I have had to replace this
link twice now, and my colleague also re-established the link at the
same customer site a few weeks ago. Once it is replaced everything is
fine again. Also, as I said earlier it seems to occur after problems
    with PCM.

Having spoken to the CSC there would appear to be other similar
experiences. Can anyone else provide any further information?

The evironment I am working on is:

    AlphaServer 2100
    OSF/1 V3.2
    PCM V1.5
OSF/1 LAT patch installed (as detailed in 624.last)

The only one I've seen is the one on the same customer site as
you're talking about here. The most significant impact was
obviously that they were relying on /usr/sbin/sh for root!
(other than digital's image of course).

I've heard of the link being lost but not of it happening on
any other PCM systems (being the focus here I would have thought
I would have - I'll have to have a word if that's not the case :-)
'twas Kim wasn't it you were dealing with?)

I would suspect that whatever is causeing PCM to not restart/
reconfigure is also causing the /usr/sbin -> /bin problem.

Incidentally - couldn't give me a bell about the 2 calls I've got
for this site could you? Our hero Simon has got a fix for the
IPMT'd one into the latest kit but If my feel for this site is right
you'll be the one installing it :-) I've tried to contact Geoff
but no answer so horses and mouths and things all going together it
seems sensible to talk to yourself instead.

Jo

This was fixed offline. It was NOT a PCM bug.

Cheers Simon...
