Ed, apparently your USER variable isn't defined in this environment. I
don't know if you can just define USER or if there's a lower level
username in the shell process which needs to be set -- this looks like
an artifact of a DCE or project Athena environment perhaps?
Sean, it seems to me you've encountered this with srequest before; can
you offer any additional insight?...

Subject: problem getting into sandbox
I'm having a problem getting into a sandbox on my workstation such that
I can perform b* commands.
When I do a workon I'm getting the message:
Returned user name invalid: (null)
I've run check_ode while in the sandbox and didn't see any errors. Any
hints? I'm attaching the output from workon, sbinfo, and check_ode in
case they could help. Thanks for any hints.

cd'ing to sandbox source directory: /+/usr/sandbox/egc/ptcos/src.
cd'ing to set directory: ./kernel.
starting new shell: /bin/csh.
Returned user name invalid: (null)
NOTE: You are in your sandbox.
o This sandbox can only be used for ODE services which don't
require the ODE server (i.e. build, mklinks, etc. ).
To avoid this message use the no kerberos switch:
workon -nk -sb sandbox name

Thanks Josh,
USER is defined as an environment variable, but it's not one of the things
that sbinfo shows. It's defined as my username. Has anyone thought of
anything else? What call is being made in workon that is returning a null
user name?

Ed,
The workon process is doing a syscall of getlogin() which can only be set by
the setlogin() syscall. This is common to systems that use Athena and kerberos
names to log into a system because that code doesn't do a setlogin(). To
verify this you can do a rlogin into the same system and things should work.

Thanks Sean. I wrote a toy to test if the login is set, since I am using DCE
(with SIA turned on). The toy just does a getlogin call and returns the value.
While outside the workon session it returns my username. When I do the
workon, the null username error is returned. When I run the test inside the
workon session, it returns the username. Boy am I confused, because your
explaination was the type of problem I suspected. Is the ode source pool on
like here so I can take a peek at the source?
Thanks.

Your mail doesn't make sense to me. You say your test returns a username
outside of a workon and then a null when you do a workon and then returns
username when inside a workon session.
I bet this has to do with the fact that the ode commands a linked statically
and when you run DCE (with SIA) it's not going though some extra library calls.
Try this, log into flume and build a static version of you test program and
see if it returns the username outside of a workon session.

Ed, the sources are available, if you mount /usr/sde from buffer, under
