I can't build a kernel yet, and I think I've done my usual stuff...

Charlie, did you get help back from this?  I believe you need to use
supported machine-type CONFIG names; i.e. one of these:

export KERNELS="GENERIC SAS FLAMINGO COBRA RUBY PELICAN JENSEN GAMMA SABLE 
ALCOR
 TLASER AVANTI AVANTI.LITE AXPVME64 AXPPCI33 MIKASA ALPHAPC64 EB66PLUS"

not private system names.
