3.0. "kernel build syntax question" by AOSG::TAPPAN () Mon Apr 26 1993 15:08

    Subject: single kernel target only

To build individual kernel targets I use the syntax:

    build BINARY_vmunix MAKE_ARGS=kernel_file.o

This command compiles or assembles the desired target and then looks
for source files in the backing tree newer than object files in
obj/alpha/kernel/BINARY. Is there syntax to just generate the target
    without additional checking?

    			Thanks,

Sure, just don't include vmunix - as in:

    build BINARY_ MAKE_ARGS=kernel_file.o

You have got to be kidding! Why on earth would there be a limit of
12 files to be submitted at one time? Also why would untested changes
get introduced here in our production environment?

Tuesday, May 11, A note of mine was forwarded to krisis: :buildhelp. A week is

not a long time to wait; however, it is rumored by co-workers that responses
usually come within a day.

I just want to be sure that it hasn't fallen into some kind of a black hole. If
the question is a good one yet everyone thinks someone else is better at
answering it, is there some way of tracking who should decide? Please excuse any
ignorance in buildhelp etiquette I have displaied here.

Is there any way to completely undo the effects of
a bcreate? "bcreate -undo" only unlocks and outdates.
Should I be concerned about leaving a clutter of rcs
files for bcreate'd files which are never submitted?

Josh has always explained that there's a janitor process that removes
the emptry dregs of these files, as long as they're unlocked and
all branches are outdated. No need to worry, except the time delay
for these dregs to be deleted will affect your ability to bcreate the
file again.

Do the bcreate -undo.

There's a script that runs at midnight that cleans up all of these.

Hi! I need to build a unique makefile for my project under .../src/kernel/ted
directory. I tried including existing standard.mk, rules.mk, objects.mk, ..., etc.
into my makefile and none of them could satisfy the requirement that my project has.
Is there a document on how to create these RULES.MK makefile that could be used by my
project? I tried creating my own makefile without including any of these rules
makefiles. But could not compile my source since none of the ODE environment
variables were getting passed to my makefile including the ode c compiler.

Please respond to me as soon as possible.

					Thanx!
								Harinder.

You need to include standard.mk but you can replace any of the rules (by
putting the replacements _after_ the include of standard.mk) if you need
to.

Hi,

I need help with teh following problem. We are trying to get the
assembly code listing from compilation of the source program.
Looking at 'man build' gives the flag setting for this as: -S
But the build environment had a MFLAGS which is not locally set.
And if I give "build -S <filename>" or "build MFLAGS=-S <filename>"
it ignores this option. So can someone tell me how to do this?

Thank you.

Hi. I have been running into some problems attempting to build
a kernel basically from scratch. I was wondering if you could
provide some help.

Basically I am modifying two header files and then rebuilding the
system. At first the build wasn't able to find various files on
the host system. I hope that I have resolved this problem via
unixris, but I can't be sure.

Most recently, I began a new build:

	mksb -back steelos.nightly ..etc.
	workon ....
	mklinks -dironly . <src>
	mklinks -dironly . <obj>

	modified select.h and param.h <in
			obj/alpha/kernel/include/sys>

	cd $SOURCEBASE/kernel
	build setup <completed successfully>
	setenv KERNEL_CONFIG BINARY
	build

Here, it got stuck with sctab (Don't know how to make sctab).
I was about to append the output of the screen, but my system
went down and I don't have it here. However, as far as I know,
the build had (successfully?) gone through depend and vmunix
with CONFIG=BINARY (I saw it go by on the screen).

Question: how do I amend the situation (with sctab) ?

In any case, I am presently going ahead with the following:
	setenv KERNEL_CONFIG RUBY; build
From the doc in /usr/sde/osf1/doc/kernel-build-rules.3, it seemed
that BINARY doesn't need sctab, so I am trying out the RUBY build
anyway. <is this correct?>

Thanks in advance for your help!
