784.0. "AUTODEST or New Destinations" by MARTY::FRIEDMAN () Mon Aug 10 1987 18:55

What happened to AUTODEST? The DOCUMENT installation guide infers
(with many notes) that there is no way to change or add device support.

How can I add new destinations, or allow people to set their desired
default device, like DOC$LN03_QUEUE allowed us in BL6?

    Thanks.

AUTODEST had a sagging jaw and the developers kindly hospitalized it for
a facelift. Don't know if its condition is still serious or not.

In the meantime, I believe the only queue name modifications you can
make are in the DOC$DESTINATIONS.DAT file.

Is data in DOC$DESTINATIONS.DAT still position-dependent? I would like to
add things but I don't want blow anything up.

NO, it is no longer position-dependent. If you do another
partial installation, the new DESTINATION commands just get
    appended to the existing file.

Furthermore, you will not be allowed
to put in a destination name that is the same as an existing
destination name, or that is ambiguous because one name is
the same as the leading characters of another name.

If you understand that the DESTINATION commands are being parsed
with the callable CLI interface in VMS, and you don't mess up
the continuation characters, etc, you can probably do some
    successful editing on it.

As for AUTODEST, its condition was quite grave; it's in a coma now, and
we'll be deciding over the next few weeks whether to pull the plug, transplant
any healthy organs to its successor, etc.
