Since I work for Field Service rather than SWAS, maybe I'm not the
obvious person to moderate this conference. But I thought that setting
it up would make it easier to find information about the competition
and make it easier to follow Rdb/VMS technical issues in that conference.

Interested in all aspects of databases, relational and otherwise.
    Also 4GLs.

TSG is an engineering group that works under contract for other groups
in the company. We work both on hardware and software.

My current project will create a product that involves the use of
    databases and database related products.

I am interested in the whole works -- DSRI, Rdb, SQL, CDD,
DBMS(?),......and what the rest of the world is doing.
This is as specific as I can get at this time!

I'm very interesting on all the VIA products and think that the notes
files are very useful for getting information, solving problems
and knowing each other...

I agree with Ian Smith about sharing knowledge and Ian is doing this very well
on last years in this notes file and others...

I'm using RDB from the field-test version 1.0 (some years ago...) and very
happy to advice it to many customers in all the markets : commercial, army ,
technical and government applications.

I'm now working on a very big project for the government , which is a network
application all over the country (it'll consist more than 100 VAX'es) and
they work with all the VIA products and IBM connection products.

I've been with DEC for 15 months. My background is IBM applications
(8 years) on mainframes (MVS and XA). I've used IMS and Focus, played
with DB2, Mark IV, etc. My area of interest is relationalism, 4GL's,
and a growing interest in CASE technology. I go to outside seminars
whenever I can, and have local accounts who are running Oracle, Adabas,
System 1032, and our products. I've beaten Oracle a couple of times.
We also have a couple of Application Factory sites (that product
is getting better all the time) as well as a couple of Intouch sites.
So I get my fingers into all types of pies.

I've been in Channels Marketing supporting the VIA products for almost
3 years. Our group concentrates on activities that influence Digital's
resellers, and prospective resellers, to use Digital software platforms
for building applications that they sell. The types of accounts
I deal with are OEMs, CMPs, SCMPs, and distributors. In getting
our resellers to use the VIA products as an application platform,
my activities include: non-disclosure presentations, product overview
presentations, assisting in sales situations where the local team is
up against other VAX-based database platforms (especially Ingres
and Oracle) , special reseller programs, and many other activities.
This competitive notes file is just what I need!!

I have been involved in many sales calls related to OLTP and

INGRES, and SYBASE. Of course, I played around with VIA products

"Effective delivery, support and use of distributed software and
database technology will be the deciding factor for how successful
Digital will be over the next five years."

This comment was made in a internal research meeting at the Gartner
Group (my previous employer). In Software Management Strategies,
at least 30 percent of the group's effort was discussing/researching
database issues with F200 (F500) clients, independent software vendors,
    and computer manufacturers.

My interests in this conference is to separate the "facts" from
the "fluff" of Digital's current and future database and application
development software with respect to the competition.

In addition, I'm interested in discussing Digital's presentation
of its products (DSRI, VAX SQL, Rdb, Data Distributor, DTF, VIDA,
CASE, etc.) in this area, from several points of view (competitive,
functional, architectural, etc.) -- if this is more appropriate
in another conference or offline, please contact me at BMT::TIMMINS
or 333-6771. Also, I would be interested in discussing the independent
software vendors in the IBM (MVS, VM), DEC, Unix, and PC areas.

    Thanks, Larry T.

I joined DEC in april 1987 without any prior knowledge about
DEC-products, but with a background of 10 years IBM-experience
(MVS+CICS), of which the last 5 years also was with IDMS/r and
related products from Cullinet. Out of those 5 years, the last
3 was with the danish Cullinet-rep (projects and cust-support,
primarily on big OLTP systems), so if any of you've got tricky
questions on IDMS/r .......

Currently I'm working on a (big) customer project (Rdb/ACMS/TDMS/
Cobol, and later RALLY). Yet, I will also do some advisory on Rdb
and all our other Info-Sys related products, therefore the
competitive, functional, and architectual aspects of our products
are relevant to me.

I'm interested in all pracital aspects about the usage of 4GL,
the VIA-products, CASE, etc., but with a special emphasis on
"solutions and capability" (I guess it's hard to forget a good
old OLTP background).

As there seems to be a few products out there that can't be
neglected, I find this conference usefull to keep current on
our strong (and less strong) points.

I recently joined the DBS group as the Database Languages Product Manager.
Obviously, I am very interested in any competitive situations where Rdb/VMS
wins/loses and for what reasons. Particularly of interest is how RDML and
VAX SQL are holding up against our competitor's offerings.

Any information that can be provided by the people in the field as to the
pro's and con's of our database languages offering are very much appreciated.

Also, as I am a firm believer in NOT discussing futures in public conferences,
if you are interested in becoming a member of an internal distribution list
that will be used to solicit and distribute pertinent information etc. on
future products/offerings, please send me mail.

    Rdb/VMS Background:

I have worked with Rdb/VMS since the second field test of V1.0.
Formally from the COG group (now SWS/Eng), as well as the supporting
the product I wrote portions of the V1.0 support course and rewrote
the entire course in V2.0 and taught a major portion of the software
specialists out there until accepting the DBMS Project Leader position
a year ago. I still follow the product close because of its KODA
ties to DBMS and the work that goes on around here.

    Interests:

In this file, I just want to keep up with the complaints/comments
of features/performance of both Digital and non-Digital database
software. Also I am very interested in understanding more on
competitors features for database maintenance and monitoring, since
these are two areas I am currently dealing with heavily.

functions that have involved at times the use and consideration
of databases. I have completed one implementation of a DBMS database
and am working with a group that have just replaced DBMS with Ingres.
The people in the areas that I work in are just beginning to use
formal databases and it seems Oracle and Ingres come quickly to
mind. I have friends that are currently running a comparision between
Sybase and SARP(?). As aside they feel that they are debugging
the Sybase code for the company. I hope this file will give me
a greater technical understanding of the other databases because
I have a good chance of using them.

I've already put some entries in this notesfile, but I presume it's
better if everybody makes his "profile" clear...

I've been with DEC for 11 months. My area of interest is databases and
    4GL's.

I had my first experience with Rdb during the DECUS-FRANCE benchmark in
MARCH, 1987. In our area the main competitor are Oracle and Ingres, and
the last version (ie 2.2) od Rdb helped us a lot to be more confident and
    thus, more agressive...

I hope, - like everybody does, I think - that the future version of Rdb
will follow this trend so that we can take the lead and keep it...

I have been with Digital 10 years and have implemented a number of
systems using our VIA products. I have used CINCOM, IMS and other DB's
and much prefer DBMS and RDB to these other products. This conference
has been both enjoyable and very useful to date. Keep those cards
    and letters coming!

I've been in the business for about 10 years, and in my 3rd with Digital
in Munich. My main focus lies on Manufacturing Systems but of course,
one needs something to "drive" them, so I've specialized in VIA.

I get into many quite a few situations where we're up against 3rd-Party
vendors such as Oracle or Ingres, ergo, this conference is very
important for me ! Lately, the distributed-database aspect has been
an important factor when selling "Systems".

While working for a forest products manufacturing customer in 1984, I
selected Rdb over Oracle, Ingres, and Ultra. (I was an old Datatrieve
user.) From there, I worked one and a half years for a bank using IBM
and DB2. There, I had the privilege to take a course taught by Chris
Date (on Relational Database -- what else?). I also did semantic data
modeling using the "JANUS" tool from DACOM. Two months ago I joined
    Digital.

I'm a real fan of the VIA product set, especially Rdb. I'm also a firm
believer in the relational model. Just in the last week I've had the
occasion to research competitions with Oracle and Adabas. I'm looking
forward to participating in this conference. I would be happy to share
what I know about DB2; we looked closely at its optimizer.

There are security requirements for the database since the system will

ACMS & Rdb.
Recently, I was System Designer on a major ACMS/RDB project computerising all
Housing Grants for the Irish Government. Four databases are involved and
the results have been excellent. See new note.
Have developed a 'core' Database Design Methodology which has been used
successfully on this project. Called Digital Database Design Methodology (DDDM),
it is an easy to use methodology designed to produce WORKING databases with the
most realistic cost/benefit ratio. It is NOT an all bells & whistles
methodology. It is a manual methodology.
I use the notes as a aid to problem solving, but feel that many problems can be
solved by good design.

Although I have been with Digital for a year and a half, I still feel like
a new hire...

Job activities with Digital todate:
1. have evolved around the analyzing of NIA account business problems to
define specific issues and propose solutions.
2. include being on loan to a delivery project for seven months assisting
    with VAX DBMS work.

Prior to Digital I worked for Wang Laboratories for 8 years supporting
VS systems in areas of application, network and R-DBMS design and
installation.

As part of a sales support unit ramp up in the area of Database, I will begin
focusing on our VIA products. I'm looking forward to this assignment.
With what little I know of them, I like what I have learned and think they
will have a great future.

excellent customers, very satisfied with our products, they have bought

Mostly due to DEC's policy of being just a few months behind everyone else
