527.0. "INGRES 6.3" by ZPOV03::JEFFREYCHOY (Hardly trained ) Thu Jan 04 1990 09:23

Has anybody come across a recent Ingres press release
(Boston,Nov 6,1989) by RTI or now better known as Ingres Corp.

I am currently competing with Ingres and how should I rebut
the following claims on Ingres Intelligent Database TM and
Knowledge Management TM. My customer is getting excited over this
    recent annoucements.

    INGRES RELEASE 6.3 empahsised:

    INTELLIGENT DATABASE = DATA MANAGEMENT
                         + KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
                         + OBJECT MANAGEMENT

    NEW INTELLIGENT DBMS MANAGEMENT INCLUDE:

    DATA MANAGEMENT
    -ONLINE BACKUP
    -TWO PAHSE COMMIT
    -INTERNATIONAL SORTING SEQ
    -MULTISERVER FAST COMMIT

    KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

    -RULE SYSTEM
    -RESOURCE CONTROL SYSTEM
    -ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEM

ONLINE BACKUP is not an issue, since Rdb has it more than a year ago
but it is "2PC" that worries me. Their packaging of conventional
database with object database and knowledege database is indeed very
impressive and sounds like "An offer you cannot refuse".

Could someobody offer me some ammunition to fight this
    case please.

    Best Regards, Jeffrey

    Jeffrey,

I recently attended an INGRES seminar where they were having problems
demonstrating even their V6.0 product. When asked about the V6.3
"intelligent" database products, they said that they were not available
yet and did not specify when they would be available.

So, I think it would be important to explain to the customer that he
must buy products that are already available and not believe in futures
which may or may not solve the problem.

If INGRES really do have such a technologically advanced product, get
them to demonstrate ALL of these new features to the customer.

Rdb/VMS V3.1 is a very good product and can deliver customer
expectations today, not at some mythical time in the future.

I called Denver directory assistance and asked for Ingres' corp and
Relational Technology separately. I got two different phone numbers.
The Relational Technology number was answered and the Ingres number
rangh off the wall with no answer...

An old friend of mine said that they had recently changed their name to
Ingres Corp. He also said that they has an opening in San Diego which
was cancelled due to their hiring freeze.

In a nutshell...they are now Ingres' Corporation. A bit catchier and
recognizeable than 'Relational Technology' I would say..

My understanding is that all the "Knowledge based ..." stuff in V6.3 is
what we call Triggers and Constraints which we announched in V3.1
(already shipping in the states (?)).

I also understand their 2PC requires special programming and manual
intervention after a 'crash' to rollback the databases.

This is just my understanding, so check up before you shoot them
down. We still have a better product in Rdb !

    Hope this helps.
