992.0. "Wanted: Rdb-compatible 4GL tools..." by NOVA::NOVA::R_ANDERSON (My timing is Digital.) Wed Sep 18 1991 16:10

I'm posting this for someone from the USENET network, since I didn't know the
answer:

Article 13403 of comp.databases:

I will be migrating a group of moderate size databases from VMS Datatrieve to
Rdb. We might decide to go with Ingres instead. My knowledge of Ingres and Rdb
is scant. Where I can find comparison information on Rdb and Ingres on VMS?

I am also looking for an Rdb applications design tool that would let me design
screen input forms along with the actual databases themselves. A package which
allows a complete database system in Rdb or Ingres to be created from scratch
including data file structures, data entry screens, modification screens and
reports would be ideal. Does anyone know of such a package? Right now, I expect
to have to learn how to design Rdb databases by hand and then use Pascal to
call FMS and Rdb routines for data entry and reporting purposes.

I've been looking through various newsgroups and have not found much info about
VMS and Rdb. It seems as if Sun and IBM are much better represented here than
is VMS. Does anyone know of any on-line services where I can get info on VMS
and Rdb and maybe public domain DCL files?

Thanks in advance for any info you provide.

If default Rdb databases are ok, he could use RALLY or DECdecision,
but maybe soe tuning is required afterwards.

    datatrieve doesn't have databases, my guess is he is referring to RMS
    files. In which case there is a lot of discussion of switching from
    RMS to Rdb in the RDB_40 notesfile on NOVA. Also, an advantage of
    Rdb/VMS is he can switch the RMS files to Rdb, and keep on using his
    Datatrieve procdures etc, as the change will be invisible to the user.

Rdb and Ingres come out looking the best.
992.4DTR - he has it already!HGOVC::DEANGELISMomuntaiThu Sep 19 1991 10:056
I agree totally with .2 - If he already has DTR/RMS and is doing data entry
etc. (presumable through FMS) then he already has everything he needs. As
Simon says his procedures should (mostly) stay the same. He may need to tune
them for locking. The only other thing he needs to do is to create the db.

Not sure why anyone is recommending anything but RALLY. It does everything
you want to do and it works well with either Rdb or RMS files.

992.14Recommend RALLY - Digital gains more revenue.KOBAL::KIRKI've lost my hidden agenda!Mon Oct 07 1991 02:499
    Recommend RALLY, Digital's strategic 4GL. This will ensure that Digital
    receives all of the revenue from the sale. In this day and age we
    cannot afford to give away any business to 3rd parties, unless we
    cannot provide a requested product. In the case of 4GLs, we can provide
    RALLY.

    Richard

    P.S. RALLY - available on MSDOS in the very near future.
992.15TRIM/tools or PARADOX/PARADOX SQL LINK, Maybe?TYFYS::SLATERAs we see ourselves, so do we become.Sun Oct 13 1991 04:5032
    Re: .0

    I am from the Center for Migration Services in Colorado Springs,
    Colorado.  I recommend two products:

         1) TRIM/tools, a product that we use in-house, and in our
             ORACLE to Rdb migration program. It is suite 4GL tools which
             allows developers to rapidly put up a system, including
             reports, screens, menus, and querying capability in a
             very short period of time. For additional information,
             e-mail me (TYFYS::SLATER) or Dave Munns (TYFYS::MUNNS)
             who is our Database Migration Team Project Manager.

         2) PARADOX and PARADOX SQL for Rdb/VMS. This pair of products
             allows rapid prototyping and system development in an MS-DOS,
             PC-based environment, while allowing upload, download, and
             client/server access to Rdb/VMS databases on the VAX. Using
             PARADOX/PARADOX SQL LINK is becoming more appealing due to the
             present market penetration of PARADOX (and name recognition).
             BORLAND International distributed more than 800,000 copies of
             PARADOX in the past 12 months. For additional information
             about PARADOX/PARADOX SQL LINK, you may e-mail me at TYFYS::
             SLATER or review the notes I wrote up on it at NAC::IBMPC
             No. 7323, or one of the notes I left on the Rdb/VMS, or
             the SQL_SERVICES Notes files.

    Good Luck!
