622.0. "ADABS<->RDB connection?" by BER::MOENCH () Tue Apr 17 1990 20:12

      Hello,

on of our customers asks if - and how - he might be able to access data
in an ADABAS DB on a SIEMENS (BS2000) from a VAX, and how to transfer
data between that ADABAS/BS2000 and Rdb running on a VAX.

The whole cenario looks like that:

The customers has two IS teams, on for commercial, one for technical
appliactions. The commercial departments uses a SIEMENS (BS2000)
      with ADABAS for their applications.

We a trying to sell the technical group a VAX solution with a RDB
database and ALL-IN-1 as the UI (hoping for the proposed ALLIN1-RDB
      intergration to come in time...).

Now they'd like to know how to access the ADABAS data on the SIEMENS
(the need to read the data and would like to write, too, if possible).

Could FOCUS (on the VAX) be used for that purpose, accessing the
ADABAS-DB on the SIEMENS as a remote DB (Focus would be nice because of
      it's integration with ALLIN1 (MRE))

Another idea might be NATURAL/Rdb: could NATURAL (running on a VAX) be
used to access both databases (Rdb/VAX, Adabas/Siemens)?

      Any hints/infos/experience will be appreciated!

      Regards, Andreas

I have one customer who has found that remote ADABAS access is a
very poor performer. The request is not sent to the remote node.
It appears a lot of the look is performed locally requireing all
needed DB pages to be pulled across the network.

I would contact Software A.G. directly to ask what connections they
support. Just because something works, doesn't mean its supported.

    You might consider VAXlink.

VAXlink provides a menu-driven user interface which guides the user
through a series of panels to select data to be downloaded into Rdb.
VAXlink constructs an extraction command and sends a request to
Answer/DB Extractor running on the mainframe. Answer/DB Extractor
is sold and supported by the AnswerSystems Division of Sterling
Software, Inc. The vanilla version of Answer/DB Extractor can access
IMS and VSAM. Sterling also offers an additional option, GDBI, the
General Database Interface, which can be programmed to access any
mainframe-based database. We have at least one customer using VAXlink
to access ADABAS on IBM. I assume that Answer/DB also runs on Seimens.

VAXlink moves data only from the mainframe down to the VAX, and it does
so fairly slowly. It would not be appropriate if the customer intends
to transfer large amounts of data in a timely fashion. Using a CT
gateway, you can expect to transfer 1-2 MB/hour.

You also might consider using DTF. Data would need to be extracted
from ADABAS into VSAM files before DTF could access the data, but
DTF can transfer data in both directions, and it moves the data very
    quickly.
