620.0. "SQL*forms convertion to DECforms ?" by BER::MOENCH () Thu Apr 12 1990 17:51

	Hi,

	We've got a customer here in Berlin thinking about a migration
	from ORACLE to VAXRdb (hear, hear!). He, of course, is interestet
	in converting his SQL*forms applications to DECforms/Rdb.

	Has anybody experience with that process?

	Maybe a migration from SQL*forms to DECforms still unsing ORACLE?

	I've heard about a tool beeing developed in US doing something like
	that; who knowes more about it or can give me names?

	Any information would be appreciatet. And I guess this could be of a
	larger interest concerning our competition against ORACLE with
	customers already using ORACLE but are willing to convert.

	Thanks in advance

		Andreas

    Contact Chuck (NOVA::) Stata for information on the third-party
    TRIFOX tools. They have a tool that converts SQL*Forms applications
    to their own TRIM/APP applications. TRIM/APP runs about 200% faster
    than SQL*Forms, and it works against both ORACLE and Rdb.

    I know of no product that converts SQL*forms to DECforms and I have
    studied both. I suspect that you could write a filter to pick out
    the forms part and build the IFDL file. Then you would have to pick
    out the triggers and put IFDL response steps and/or Rdb triggers.
    Then you have to pick out the rdbms access steps and build 3gl code
    to talke to Rdb to store/retrieve/update the tables.

    Be aware that TriFox tools are just a proprietary as SQL*forms and
    customers I have talked to are not at all interested. In addition,
    Trifox big customer they always talk about is in the UK (Sweden I
    think) and the speed up and conversion they refer to is a Pyramid
    Unix box. I suppose they have a VMS product but it is unclear if they
    have sold any non-unix "tools". Also, don't them tell you they have a
    DECforms interface/conversion cause they don't. When I tried to talk
    to Trifox about how they accessed Rdb, they couldn't tell me the access
    method (DSRI vs dynamic SQL) and that told me a lot !!! Be careful.

620.3Some history RANCH::DAVISUh Oh...another Balloonist..Tue Apr 24 1990 22:3816
Last fall I put together a presentation for a customer and mentioned Trifox
for the conversion tools portion. We were trying to convince them to migrate
to Rdb and the conversion issue was the hottest. They had 1000's of
SQL*forms applications....

I asked about the trifox agreement and was told "DECforms conversion by January"
So I put February on the overhead....

I'm glad they didn't buy our strategy, because I still haven't heard any
big announcements.

I believe the proposed agreement between Digital and Trifox fell apart...

(Still looking for the Oracle conversion....er the conversion Oracle)

    The DECforms support for Trifox was demoed at DB Expo last month.
    Productization of same will be done when actual need for the support
    materializes (ie paying customer) as it is still not clear what the
    demand for the DECforms is. All contacts to date indicated the desire
    to maintain the Oracle look & feel rather than a DECforms interface.
    (Making DECforms look like Oracle is not an acceptable anwser).

    As for the availability, it is avialable now, and has in fact been bid
    in several conversion opportunities. All are in the pipeline, pilot, or
    being converted. Conversion and Migration Services (Peter Ziek) are
    currently negotiating a ww license with Trifox. If you need to convert
    today, it's available through CMS (523-2030 Tom Koski)

    It is not a product. Only available as a service offering. And yes it
    does require "another 3rd party 4GL" . The BIG difference is that this
    one supports Rdb and Ultrix/SQL. So if interoperability is an issue
    this will give you read/write access to several other SQL DBs.

    The other options also now available are to rewrite the applications with
    Rally or ACMS and Rdb.

    Also, look at the Digital Review 4/30 front page article titled
    "DEC plans to support tool that unlocks ORACLE applications"
    regarding TRIFOX and our negotiations with them.

620.6Premature announcement ??MAIL::DUNCANGGerry Duncan @KCO - DTN 452-3445Fri May 04 1990 03:367
    Did Trifox jump the gun with this article ?? Sounds like they were
    trying to force our hand ... or am I misreading the article.

    Also, since Trifox is the author of Oracle's SQL*QMX, does this
    announcement mean thea Trifox and Oracle are not getting along well ??

620.7Agreement in placeSUBWAY::WANGMon Jan 21 1991 21:0111
    The agreement between DEC and Trifox is now in place. The contact at
    Colorado's Center for Migration Services is Tom Koski.

    As far as the relationship between Trifox and ORACLE, I heard Trifox is
    seeking to break the exclusive marketing agreement of SQL*QMX with
    ORACLE. I guess Trifox got screw by ORACLE, like everybody else.

    A similar product to SQL*QMX now works with Rdb/VMS.
