312.0. "%DVC-E-VMOVRFLOW error in Device Conversion" by MOVIES::GROSSMITH (The Man with the Golden Mouse) Mon Apr 09 1990 15:21

Note #287 talked about a problem similar to this, but the details seem to be
different. So, here's my problem...

I should say here that I'm investigating this problem on behalf of one of our
writer - I'm the system manager in this case.

There follows an extract from a log file generated when building a book using
the ONLINE.REFERENCE style. VMS Version T5.4-4ET (External Field Test) and using
Document V1.2B. Here's the extract, the full log file follows in the next reply.

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.
/Mike

Sorry -- our cluster called 38.581 KORONA. I've updated the permanent
database and will update the temporary db on each member as I can. (Or
maybe the whole thing will crash again soon, and then the reboots will
take care of the matter. :-) )

What version of VAX DOCUMENT are you running. If V2.0, using the 1.2B DVC
will not work.

312.12Does that mean a gentle force to use V2 ?MUNLEG::WALTERDoc,I've a visibility problem-NextFri Jun 14 1991 07:5830

    Hi Mary,

thanks for your response. My collegue will send you mail requesting
    the executable.

Generally, I'd like to say that I do not think that it is a good idea
to protect more recent versions of software kits from copy access.

It is well known that incompatibilities exist fairly often between
pieces of software (e.g. between doctypes that somebody wrote and the
up-to-date version of VAX DOCUMENT). And Murphy's law will make sure
that you urgently need to install an older version of VAX DOCUMENT or
fix one (like in our case) when you least expect it and nobody is awake
in the states to make the software available to you.

In our group we often have the necessity to run two versions of VAX
DOCUMENT in parallel. This is dictated by facts on which we have no
influence and I feel it is not appropriate to sort of exclude us or
others from using older versions of a software product if we wish to.

Or am I drawing wrong conclusions here?

    Regards

    Michael W.
