220.0. "Pocket references?" by CASEY::BURACK (Not Fade Away) Mon Nov 06 1989 16:13

    Hi,

Are pocket guides being put online? I have a pocket reference that
is 40 pages. It is in the 4 x 8 size range.

Is there an online doctype for pocket references?

    Thanks,

We asked whether our project (Rdb/VMS) was required to put our 'quick
reference guide' online to qualify as a complete doc set. The answer
was no, not if the same information is available elsewhere in the
    doc set.

So, pocket guides are not required. There's no separate doctype for
pocket guides that I know of. Wha happens when you run the sources for
your pocket reference through the ONLINE doctype?

While you can't put a workstation in your pocket, it might be nice to have a
quick guide that you could iconify and leave hanging around in your icon box.

Definitely should change the name to something like Quick Reference, though.

What happens when you run your sources through the ONLINE doctype? Try it!!!
You'll probably have to add some symbolic names.

Another alternative: create a RAGS metafile that contains all the pocket
information in one screen, and make it a formal figure. Then you could have all
the information visible at one time without scrolling (if you can display it
all without making the print too tiny).

You could have a DECW$BOOK like this:

________________________________________

<HEAD1>(Quick Reference Guide\q_ref)

<P>>REFERENCE>(cheat_sheet) provides a quick reference to (?). You can iconify
this figure and keep it in your icon box for help with (?).

<FIGURE>(Quick Reference Guide\cheat_sheet)
<FIGURE_FILE>(bookreader\xxxxx.DECW$BOOKFIG\xx)
<X>(Reference guide (figure))
<ENDFIGURE>

I put our pocket guide online this afternoon -- it took about 45 minutes.

I had to add a title page and copyright page, and <LMF> tags.

I changed each formal table to an informal table, and added a <HEAD1> before
each table. This way, the TOC lists all the tables although they aren't formal
tables, and there are no hotspots to click on; it's all there on the screen.

I think it was a good idea to add the guide to the Bookreader documentation. I
loaned someone my pocket guide and never got it back. 8^)
