Maintaining Disks
7-6 If the CHapter is called Maintaining disks why does the
first page start out with Printers and plotters???
7-7 Disk Drives often called auxillary memory. (*Ive always
heard them called auxillary storage.)
7-13 Wouldnt or Shouldnt we have learned device names sooner, like
when we teach them about file specs

7-14 First couple sentences at the top of the page are goofed up.

-ISE disks in a mixed interconnect cluster.
*(They will have no idea what DSSI or ISE at this point)
-I don't think we should mention MSCP here since we havent discussed
clusters at all. They havent even seen cluster_config an its mentioned here.
7-15 I really think allocation classes should be saved until we talk about
clustering. Also your mentioning LION$DUA0 and Figure 7-1. Where is thos figure?
Nevermind I found it on page 7-22, but thats sort of far to look when we are
on page 7-15 here.
7-20 This was in correct in the Cluster student guide and its inncorrect here.
*(Please see the examples I have included from our cluster at the end of this
reply.
7-21 Your mentioning $show device/files in a cluster from SYSMAN maybe show
them how to set their enviornment and do this.

Your display is obviously done from Bailey which is a CI node in a mixed inter
connect cluster. So the display should look like the one I did above on
Splash a CI node in our mixed interconnect cluster.

Maintaining Disks Chapter 7 Objectives - You include 6 pages of information for passwords yet it is not listed as an objective. I personally think that it should be an objective. 7-13 I hope this is removed from SYSNET I. 7-14a The first paragraph needs to be rewritten. State what FAL and DFS stand for. Last paragraph "For the disk to be served correctly: " is written twice. 7-14 What is this? 7-14 Rewrite the first paragraph please. Maybe on this page state the possible values for the system parameters MSCP_LOAD and MSCP_SERVE_ALL. 7-15 Under the first bullet you refer Figure 7-1. There has not been a figure 7-1 so far. Doesn't the first dash and the third dash say the same thing. "single node" vs "only one node" Under the second bullet the second dash and the fifth dash are redundant also. The last two dashes are redundant. suggestion - On the instructor's page define: dual-ported, dual-pathed and dual-hosted. 7-16 First line repeats itself. A drawing would be nice for this information. 7-17 The last dash under the third bullet. What do you mean? Maybe you are saying To find all open files on a disk in a cluster environment use SYSMAN and set your environment to cluster and then issue the SHOW DEVICE/FILES command. See comment 7-21. 7-18 Is this display 100% correct in regards to a CI cluster? I do like the practical list of questions after the example. 7-19 Second bullet - Not in line with the output from the command. 7-20 Second bullet - Not in line with the output from the command. 7-21 After the example information is spelled incorrectly. At the first bullet dismount is spelled incorrectly. Give an example of using SYSMAN to see all nodes in a cluster. $SET DEFAULT SYS$SYSTEM $SET PROCESS/PRIVILEGE=SYSPRV $RUN SYSMAN SYSMAN>SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER SYSMAN>SHOW DEVICE/FILES then display the output Do you want to cover everything about allocation classes in this chapter? This reply is limited to technical errors only. I'll refrain from making comments one way or the other about content, style, etc.... Module 1 (Managing Disks) in SYSNET II p. 1-17 They need OPER privilege as well as SYSPRV (OPER allows access to the SYSMAN Utility and SYSPRV allows access to the files on the the disks). Example 1-5 should read as follows: $ SET PROCESS/PRIVILEGE=(OPER,SYSPRV) $ RUN SYS$SYSTEM:SYSMAN SYSMAN> SET ENVIRONMENT/CLUSTER SYSMAN> DO SHOW DEVICES/FILES $2$DUA0 p. 1-23 Similar problem as above. In the comment section for Step 1 in Table 1-2, if they are not logged into the SYSTEM account, they will need SYSPRV as well as OPER. SYSPRV here will allows the creation of QUOTA.SYS under the MFD. Page 1-27. Step 3 points to the device disk$user. The book says
subsequent commands need not point to the disk. I have not
nor can I test this for the command at step 3. I have done
adds, removes and modifies and each subsequent command needs
to be told which disk to do it to or it will do it on the disk
you are on. I think the book is wrong when it says " Note that
the /DEVICE+DISK$USER qualifier need not be specified, as the
qualifier was properly specified in step 3."
In the old days using diskquota and not sysman we could
say "use" for a device and it would always point to it. I do
not believe SYSMAN does this. If someone out there could prove
this it would be great.

Chuck, you're right. We'll have to fix this next time around. You can either keep using the /DEVICE qualifier, or use SET PROFILE/DEFAULT=device-name to do what USE did in the DISKQUOTA utility. Anyone have a preference for one or the other? Val | |||||

If I am performing MANY functions I do a SET PROF command, if its just one then I use the /DEV command. Kinda like "Do you SET DEFAULT to edit one file in another directory or just use the full file spec to get there?" For one file, I use the full file spec, for multiple files I set default. $ | |||||
