    Hi,

Can we please have a pointer to the course materials for the V6 Update
course? I will be unable to attend the TTT and I just know I'll be
    teaching this puppy.

Please let us also know when the tape will be available, part #, etc.

TTT sessions are GREAT - too bad us "trainers" don't qualify - I think
the taped session is the way to go in these cash-strapped 90's.

The train the trainer is meant to train instructors to teach both
customer and internal version. Perry Donham is working on the
materials, the schedule, if my memory serves me well is around the
    middle of May.

What's the status of the "customer materials" that will be derived from
these internal sessions. It looks like next week is really the only
week I have to prep to teach the update seminar and, though not
crucial, it would be helpful to have the materials (even a rough
version) to look at so I know what to emphasize or not during the
    limited prep time.

Is the seminars group scheduling this and resourcing it? The reason I
ask is that it was our site's understanding that Seminars was
    delivering it in our geography.

I don't know if that helps Greg or not.

I'm distressed by the last of communication here from the developer of
the one-day customer update. Can we at least have an outline of the
material to be covered? As I've said before (now with more urgency
because the offerings are fast approaching) prep time is at a premium
(actually, non-existent at this point) and I'd like to have at least
some idea of which of the topics from the train-the-trainer session are
going to make their way into the course.

        Thanks.......

    Hmmmmmm.

Today is May 20. The Train-the-trainer week was, what, 'bout 6 weeks
ago? More? The tapes are just now being edited? So, I'll order them
the moment they become available (announced here, right?). It'll take
probably 2-3 weeks to get them. I'm scheduled to teach the first
customer seminar on June 28. I'm going to be out of town teaching
on-sites at least 2 and maybe as many as four weeks in the interim.
I just have to face it -- I'm screwed!

These tapes should have been available weeks ago? Why is it taking so
    long?

I don't understand why it has taken so long for the course materials to
get put together. The materials surely only had to be taken from the
handouts at the TTT sessions -- nothing new had to be written. I
    really don't get it.

And, given the time constraints, there's going to be NO TIME FOR REVIEW
    on these materials.

Sometimes I think Digital is its own worst enemy, and that disgusts me.

       GJD
161.21BROWNY::DBLDOG::DONHAMProgress Through TraditionThu May 20 1993 13:5212
The problem was that the session on C2 security went so badly that we
decided to redo it for the camera. Cornering the person resonsible took a
considerable amount of time (this is the same person who announced the
Friday before the seminar that he would be out of town and couldn't give
his 4-hour talk on Tuesday). We've been holding on to the seminar material
until this presentation was in the can.

We'll start posting customer seminar chapters for review today; the first
teach that I've seen scheduled is 15 June.

Greg, a great deal of management effort was put into solving the
problem and there shouldn't have been any effort required because it
should have been done right the first time.

161.23NITTY::DIERCKSWe will have Peace! We must!!!!Thu May 20 1993 21:4721

I don't think I understand your comment, Jack. What problem was there
to be solved? What should have been done right the first time?

I'm still convinced there's a serious, serious flaw in the whole
process of course development. I was asked, by my manager, to give a
1-2 hours sessions summarizing the TTT sessions. I spent about 2
hours, using DECwrite, putting together a summary of the materials we
were given. I can't see how the course can be more than 60-80 pages
long, at most, and how it could take more than a few days to write.

    I just don't get it.

What are we, the instructors, to do if there are technical errors in
the course? Will there be time for review? And, considering I'm out
of town for the next two weeks and won't be able to look at the
materials 'til I'm back, are you even sure there will be someone who
    will be reviewing them?

        GJD
161.24There are no good excuses Greg, but ...TANG::RHINEJack, OpenVMS Training Product ManagerThu May 20 1993 22:0614
The security presentation should have been done right the first time.
It took an act of congress to get the tape redone. Perry has posted
the services package which should help. I would like to see an
external review, but given the past which we have debated into the
ground, I won't hold my breath.

Yes, there are problems with the process and somethings happened that I
do not want to discuss here. We did a lot of learning this time and
picking the pieces up isn't fun for anyone, instructors, developers or
product managers. The next one will be very different. Not much
    consolation for this trip around.

Jack, if you ever move out of the VMS training space, leave a note in a
bottle for your successor...the things that happened this time have
happened over and over in the past, and every time we get a new funder it
happens again. I'm sure Fred Marsh could tell you all the tales.

Perry, barring unforseen events, I plan to be here for the next ones
and it will work better. In August/September there will be a meeting
with engineering and product mgt. managers to plan and get REAL
committments. I don't believe the problems are just from new funders,
they are from lack of understanding of the importance of this training
on the part of those needing to commit resources.

In preparation for teaching the V6 customer seminar, you'll want to look
through the V6 New Features Guide. It's avaliable at
BULOVA::DOCD$:[BLADE_FINAL.POST]V60_NEW_FEATURES_SSB.PS

Also, BROWNY::$1$DUA2:[V6-SEMINAR] contains slides from the engineering
seminar; there won't be anythng in the customer seminar that wasn't
presented at the engineering seminar. Get 00-INDEX.TXT from the BROWNY
directory for a list of what's there.

Note that the customer seminar covers only BLADE; there's nothing on SPIA,

The grey background on the slides for the user features module

Hmm, I hadn't noticed it taking any longer, but then I wasn't standing over
a printer, either. It isn't too difficult to change the background color.

The Troubleshooting chapter is about ready to post, I'll do it with a paler
background...let me know if that helps.

Ok, I'll redo the rest of the chapters with a white background. Pity, I
thought that the light gray looked nice, and it helped eliminate some glare.

BTW, Paul Mosteika suggested that we design overheads shaped like this:

              -----
             / \
            / \

That way they'd be square when we project them with our 'standard'

A bit of cleanup is necessary in the memory slides; I could use some

I've read through the modules that are ready (there's still a module on
programming issues coming, right?) and really don't have much to say
    about the materials.

I'm not sure that there's really enough meat there to last a whole day.
There are lots of pages, but when I think about what they'll look like
when blown up to real 8.5x11 size, there's not a lot of material.

There are numerous typographical errors -- spelling, grammar, missing
blanks, etc. I don't have time to point them out here and will assume
that they will be fixed by the time the materials "go to press".

When will the "real" materials (as opposed to the annotated materials)
be made available on-line. I'm teaching this thing for the first time

161.47OpenVMS VAX *and* OpenVMS AXP seminar?WARNUT::GRAVESGGeoff Graves,EDU(UK); DTN 851 2637Thu Jun 10 1993 11:0424
    Re .44 and .45

It's interesting to see that you think there is only enough info for a
3/4 day seminar. A few weeks ago, we decided (in the UK) that the
OpenVMS XXX technical update seminar would be an ideal forum to
introduce OpenVMS AXP and the AXP architecture to existing VAX
system managers. We decided to use the N444 material being produced by
Perry and add 1-2 hours worth of AXP info. At that time we had no idea
whether the N444 material would occupy a full day, but would have pared
it down a bit to fit in the AXP stuff if necessary. It looks as though
    that won't be necessary!

I'm half way through doing the AXP bits with DECpresent to add as a
separate session in the one-dayers we've got scheduled in the UK.

If anyone's interested, the reasons we're taking this approach are:

The great majority of existing VAX system managers know little or
nothing about AXP systems and software but there is not enough info
to provide even a half day seminar of interest to most customers.

We're hoping that the AXP system info will attract people who may be
undecided about attending "just another VMS update seminar".

161.48DBLDOG::DONHAMProgress Through TraditionThu Jun 10 1993 13:0421
I think that the length will greatly depend on how interested the
instructor/students are in C2 security and the performance enhancements
(adaptive pool, disk cache, etc.), and on how well the instructor is
prepared to teach. The VMS material could easily take an entire day if
interest is high.

I've seen a similar situation in Sysnet, where one instructor essentially
read the IG for an entire chapter to the class, and it took about an hour.
A different instructor, with a differnt skill set, took nearly an entire
day on the chapter. Neither was correct, I think, but it shows the amount
of control that the instructor has over the flow of the course.

I'd really appreciate it if, after you teach the seminar, you enter any
questions (and answers!) that you fielded from the class. That will help
other instructors prepare, and will help course development when we design
the next seminar.

Perry

Is this the material for the internal training or the customer
training? In the original plans (Re. .-x) different handouts were to
    come.

The layout of the material looks, well, quite different for our usual
course doc. Is this still preliminary or final? What with all the
    "Information Mapping" niceties?

In view of the nature of this seminar, namely a functionality update of
VMS, it would be nice if the participants could take home something
they can use afterwards. For this purpose, a table of contents at the
beginning and an index at the end would be most useful.

Can we still expect some labs (or demos), or do we make them up
    ourselves?

The material in SUPER::IDC$REVIEW:[V6-SEMINAR]EY*.PS is in final form; this
is the customer (1-day) seminar.

I think that you'll find this format is easier to teach than the 'standard'
lecture/lab...you'll have a copy of the student handout/overhead, with
plenty of space for your notes. The information is mapped, even though it
doesn't have blocks and maps and sections. Mapping is a technique, not a
format.

If this were a steady-state course, or longer than a day, I would tend to
agree with you. However, the nature of a seminar is quite different than
that of a formal lecture, and I don't think that a table of contents or
index would be particularly useful. In addition, the student will have a
copy of the New Features manual, which does have those things.

> Can we still expect some labs (or demos), or do we make them up

There are no labs, but feel free to add them as you see fit. The seminar is
primarily informational, and presents concepts rather than implementation
details (which we teach in courses such as Sysnet).

I just taught my first V6.0 Update to 3 customers in Philadelphia.

My thoughts:

The material seems to be clear and accurate. There was obviously some time
and thought put into it. It IS only a half day seminar, though. If you deliver
it in a training center you could have a system available for "show and tell"
which might give you an extra hour or so.

My advise (this is what I did...it's been discussed already in this base note)
is to have some additional AXP material available and make the afternoon
session an "optional" lecture. They probably won't ding you so bad on the
"student revenge forms" if at least you demonstrated that you were willing to
give them at least a days work for a days pay. My 3 students, however, seized
the opportunity to take the afternoon off. :-)

Good luck!

Perry,

I think they probably got what they needed, but they could have gotten
basically the same information from the Release Notes and New Features
manuals. We (instructors) have to add some value here and with my
schedule (4 weeks on platform) going into it I really didn't have time
to add anything useful.

The instructor format is OK. I did use the bulleted comments for
backfill. I know of at least one case where I misread the slide because
the print was so small. It's not really a big deal but if you had to
rebuild anyway, I'd make the slides about 30% larger.

    re: .-1

Jack,

The small size may have contributed to some of that, but I did have one
student who participated by asking questions and actually challenging
some of the new features (like adaptive pool management and virtual
balance slots).

I'm planning on adding sample output from @REGISTER_PRIVILEGED_IMAGE HELP,
SNAPSHOT$SYCLEANUP.COM, SYS$EXAMPLES:CLASS.C, startup log when SYSMAN STARTUP
SET VERIFY/CHECK is set, and possibly console output from an upgrade or
build, but even with this extra stuff, I don't see the class lasting more
than 4-5 hours.

    Hello there everybody,

This is Arjen from Holland, with a few remarks, ideas etc.
First Perry about the instructor guide. I love the idea of having a
small copy (still readable) and the explanation under the page. I hope
we can continue this idea, there is some extra work to be done.

About the student guide. Oops I'm not an art freak, but it wouldn't be
bad a n art gallery. Don't do it again. It is a mixture between an
blow-up slideshow and a student guide. But if we just give it as an
nice to have then the customer will except it.

Now about our market in Holland. I read the story about the 3 students
John had. This is the story of Holland.
We had a campagne in which we mailed 3000 customers which had an VMS
operating system. We organised an 1 day course for the price of $370 (1
dollar is 2 guilders) We firts planned 2 sessions with 20 students in
    each session.
Now we have booked already 123 students in 4 days. We planned now 6
sessions. We hope to deliver an extra 10 days of specials. Which we
deliver on-site by the customer. We take the software with us. So you
don't have the problem of teaching without the rigth environment.

We also give all our student the following material: Student guide(?),
    New features manual, release notes.

The last Update seminar of VMS V5.5 was a greeat success in Belgium and
Holland. So we hope to continue.

Therefor I ask you please can you deliver a little bit quicker some
materials. And we all have time/resource/budget etc problems, but we
are willing to help you develop materials, guides etc.
We have a great team of instructors and they are all willing to help.

I let you all know our experience of the first sessions and put
comments from customers in here aswell.

Let's stop spitting and work together to make I very professionel and
succesful curriculum. Don't shout, but write and listen to your
    customers what they need.

If you have great ears, then you have great opportunities.

  Perry,

I like the Mini-page on the instructors page. It is great for 'context'
while studying. I personally think the print is OK -- I often read
material 6-up from our postscript printer -- but for the other
instructor's benefit DON'T make the text any smaller.

As for content, I've reviewed it just slightly and didn't see any

I have just presented the "V6.0 Update seminar " twice this week. The
following are my comments on the experience. Being one of the "old school" of
instructors please read my comments in this light.

I have been teaching VMS since 1978 and am somewhat set in my ways, so my
presentation style may not suit other instructors. Secondly I no longer work
for Digital, having been a victim/beneficiary of the transition package just
on a year ago.

Course 1 Wednesday.

17 students of a very mixed group, users through to system programmers.

The material is very Technical and does not apply to the user population,
these students were quite lost in the details. The high level students loved
the material.

Course started at 9:00am and ended at 4:30pm. too much material to really do
it justice.

Course 2 Thursday.

7 students, all large sites, all experienced managers. Had trouble finishing
by 5:00pm. Course well accepted.

General comments.

I do not like the instructor guide at all. I spent two days of my (unpaid)
prep time generating a facing page instructor guide. The guide is totally
unreadable by us "old" folks who can not see anything less than 12pt bold
print. I prefer to face my students when I am talking to them so need an
instructor guide that I can read.

Why do my classes last so long? (I hear you cry!!!)

There is one major thing missing out of the documentation --- HOW DID V5.5
implement the feature. Not all students have attended security seminars,
internals courses or performance courses, so presenting "new security
features" or "extended addressing" is meaningless unless the students
understand what it is being changed FROM.

Generally we had a fun time in class and students seemed to like the "compare
and contrast" style of presentation.

I hope the comments are constructive and help others in planning their
presentations.

Post script:-

Week of July 12 I have 4 more seminars to present accross the southern states
of Australia. Monday Perth, Tuesday Adelaide, Wednesday Melbourne, Thursday
Hobart and then home to Sydney -- this is equivalnt to Los Angeles to Boston
-- and you think contractors have it easy!!!

Have fun

Bob, it's possible to bump the point size up on the text at the bottom of
the IG page...would that help? There's not anything we can do right now
about the size of the 'mini' slide at the top of the page.

Thanks for the comments!

161.70First response from UKWARNUT::GRAVESGGeoff Graves,EDU(UK); DTN 851 2637Fri Jul 23 1993 09:33115
Just finished my first teach of the "OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS AXP
Technical Update Seminar" which incorporates the EY-N444E-SG that Perry
put together and the AXP extras that I produced to go with it. Grand total of
2 customers and 2 DECies (!), but we expect larger crowds after V6 hits the
streets (currently mid-August in the UK)

A few comments...

As previously stated (-. a few) there was not really enough material to
keep going all day on Open VMS VAX V6.0. It lasted just four hours of standup
time, and with the AXP bits, the day ended at 16:30, which is proabably long
enough for a 1-day seminar. It depends, of course, on how much fill-in the
instructor provides but I think the great majority of students who will come
on this course will not be "internals literate" and so will not want any more
than what is already in N444. The 2 customers I had (both "ordinary" system
managers) looked pretty lost when we ran through the PTE changes!

As requested; a few typos/comments on content/etc...

slide 9: DELETE/QUEUE/MANANGER is a *new* command

slide 12: /WARNING_INTERVAL Delete "number of"; it displays the actual
license details, not just the number of licenses.

slide 20: 1st bullet: "process creation time" should be "image activation time"
2nd bullet: security and Files/Volumes exec images also changed

slide 54: $MPGBLSC => $MGBLSC

slide 74: add VAX to first bullet (pedantic!)

slide 83: ticking is if MMG_CTLFLAGS = 1 and
             trolling is if MMG_CTLFLAGS > 1.

slide 121: What's "IPAR TRN" ?

slide 124: "Capability Use, Control" is missing from the table.

slide 128: 4th bullet: need a "." between DEVICE and DISK ?

slide 129: is /SECRECY only in SEVMS? It's not in V6 help, although I tried a
              $SET SECURITY/SECRECY=(ALL) on a file, and V6 accepted it!

slide 148: 1st bullet: should read "...additional identifiers which were
assigned to the image by the subsystem administrator." ?

slide 151: This slide only gives half the story so I replaced it during
class with the following 2 pages/slides ...

	o The System Manager ...

		creates a normal identifier

		UAF> ADD/IDENTIFIER EXECUTE_PROG

and grants it to the valid users of the program

		UAF> GRANT/IDENTIFIER EXECUTE_PROG USER1
		UAF> GRANT/IDENTIFIER EXECUTE_PROG USER2

		creates a Subsystem Identifier

		UAF> ADD/IDENTIFIER/ATTRIBUTES=(RESOURCE,SUBSYSTEM) SUB_ID

and grants it to the Subsystem Administrator (USER69)

		UAF> GRANT/IDENTIFIER/ATTRIBUTES=(RESOURCE,SUBSYSTEM) -
		_UAF> SUB_ID USER69

o The System Manager sets up CONTROL access to the Subsystem image
(PROG.EXE) for the Subsystem Administrator (USER69)

		$SET SECURITY/ACL=(ID=USER69,ACCESS=CONTROL) PROG.EXE

o The Subsystem Adminstrator sets ACEs to protect the image

		$SET SECURITY/ACL=((ID=EXECUTE_PROG,ACCESS=EXECUTE),-
				   (ID=[*,*],ACCESS=NONE)) PROG.EXE

adds the Subsystem Identifier to the image

		$SET SECURITY/ACL=(SUBSYSTEM,ID=SUB_ID,ATTRIBUTE=RESOURCE) -
				   PROG.EXE

and protects the file(s) used by PROG.EXE

		$SET SECURITY/ACL=((ID=SUB_ID+MGRS,ACCESS=READ+WRITE),-
			           (ID=SUB_ID,ACCESS=READ),
				   (ID=[*,*],ACCESS=NONE)) filename

[I'd really appreciate any comments on the above, it looks OK to me, but
can anyone hone it down?]

slide 154:	2nd bullet: does "opaque" mean encrypted? We've never heard
of an "opaque byte stream" before!

slide 158: Prior to OpenVMS VAX V6.0, it IS possible to SPAWN from a
CAPTIVE account as long as you don't want DCL access. $SPAWN/INPUT=X.COM
runs then returns to the captive .COM . $SPAWN/TRUSTED is *required* at
V6.0 to do this. Interactive access is still denied even with /TRUSTED.

slide 165:  2nd bullet:  "VACRTL.EXE"  =>  "VAXCRTL.EXE"

slide 171:  "maneuvering"  =>  "manoeuvering"

Hope this helps,

Geoff

BTW, the IG format was OK; I don't use an IG in class as I annotate a
copy of the SG with all my "extras" from the IG and other sources to
    teach from.

    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of teaching the OpnenVMS V6.0 Technical Update
Seminar. I am looking for the on-line presentation materials for the
class. Examples: postscripts files or slides presentation for teaching
the seminar. I would alsso appreciate any advice/suggestions concerning
the EFFECTIVE teaching of the V6.0 Technical Update seminar.

Best regards and thanks in advance for your support,

    G'day

8 courses down,10 to go - I thought it about time to add to my comments
    in 161.68

I can not finish this course before 4:30 pm under any circumstances,
even restricting comments to V6.0 (no alpha). As mentioned previously I
contrast V6.0 with V5.5 and discuss the reasons for the change.

Many years ago in a previous life I learnt a technique that still
serves very well today, it goes like this.

    Always present FEATURE, FUNCTION, VALUE

FEATURE - What are the technical details of the new
    		feature/functionality
FUNCTION - What does it do
VALUE - What's in it for me

Using this structure it is very easy to present the material an discuss
the reasons for using the new feature.

My timings are to get to about page 70 by 12:30 (lunch time) and then
    finish by 4:30

I usually quiz the class at the start to find the population of
students that have done internals, performance management, sysnet III
and to establish those with large sites. This allows me to judge the
    level of presentation.

All this seems to work as I am getting QA's in the 90% range.

    Hope this helps some.

    Regards
    BobH.

    PS. P L E A S E let's get back to facing page instructor guides :-)

161.74Material Right or Wrong?WARNUT::GRAVESGGeoff Graves,LS(UK);DTN 851 2637Tue Aug 31 1993 12:1610
As a lot of folks have been/are on holiday/vacation, can I repeat my
plea for comments on my entry 161.70? Particularly the MMG_CTLFLAGS and
Security Profile changes I suggested. Am I right or am I wrong? Is
the material right or wrong? Please will someone with a few minutes to
    spare (!) check it out?

    Thanks,

This is extracted from some mail that Geoff and I exchanged recently...

Most of your comments are correct...I'll try to address the questions you
posed.

>slide 54: $MPGBLSC => $MGBLSC

Right.

>slide 83: ticking is if MMG_CTLFLAGS = 1 and
> trolling is if MMG_CTLFLAGS > 1.

Right.

>slide 121: What's "IPAR TRN" ?

I don't know. Bonnie Morgan did all of the security stuff, and she's no
longer at
DEC. I've sent a note to the security folks with this and your other
security
questions, but haven't heard back yet.

>slide 128: 4th bullet: need a "." between DEVICE and DISK ?

Yes.

>slide 129: is /SECRECY only in SEVMS? It's not in V6 help, although I
tried a
> $SET SECURITY/SECRECY=(ALL) on a file, and V6 accepted it!

Waiting for word from the security folks. I'd say if V6 accepts it, then
you can
use it, but I can't find it documented anywhere (which would be a problem
at a C2
site).

>slide 148: 1st bullet: should read "...additional identifiers which were
>assigned to the image by the subsystem administrator." ?

Sounds good.

>slide 151: This slide only gives half the story so I replaced it during
>class with the following 2 pages/slides ...
...procedure here...
>[I'd really appreciate any comments on the above, it looks OK to me, but
>can anyone hone it down?]

This looks fine. I think Bonnie wanted to redo this but left before she
could
finish.

>slide 154:	2nd bullet: does "opaque" mean encrypted? We've never
heard
> of an "opaque byte stream" before!

Yes, it's encrypted.

>slide 171:  "maneuvering"  =>  "manoeuvering"

:^)
