181.0. "Stopit, Stopit wherefore art thou????" by FOOT::DAW (Licensed S.P.G tamer) Wed Oct 05 1988 17:08

Once upon a time there was a happy little machine called STOPIT.
It had no say in it's choice of name, what its logicals were called,
and frequently ran out of disk space as the horrible disk-space-
gobbling-monster kept ramming it full of out of date save-sets and
    log files.

But one bleak Winter day (summer actually, but this is a fairytale),
    the mean system-management-machine-gobbler-cluster-spewer came along
and breated fire on poor STOPIT. After that it's name was changed
to a much less aromatic name 'FOOT', all it's disk-name logicals were
changed, and it became just a weeny part of the
great-big-adgsaurus-cluster. Nobody liked FOOT. INCH, MILE and YARD
kept going down just so that they could get away from it, and until
this day FOOT is an orphan, which isn't living happily ever after!

181.1Life is not so bad...GROYNE::HAYESIan Hayes, DTN 781 ext 4327Wed Oct 05 1988 19:1228
There are many good reasons why STOPIT has been incorporated into
the ADG cluster and it will actually yield more benefits than
    penalties.

Firstly, it was always intended that STOPIT would one day become
a cluster. Unfortunately the big bad wolf called 'Budget-cuts' got
its teeth into what was going to become STOPIT's sister.

The computer resources in ADG had to be realigned to distribute the
workload. The users of the ADG cluster were really struggling on an
overloaded machine. In addition, as you rightly point out, STOPIT was
regularly banging it proverbial head on the ceiling of its disk
    capacity.

With the new arrangment, ADG users have more power to their elbow,
STOPIT users have more disk space and have the reliability advantage
    of being in a cluster.

Finally, in the not too distant future (any comment Steve?) the
ADG cluster will acquire another 8700 processor which will make
    it far more powerful again.

So, don't grieve the loss of our good friend STOPIT. After all,
he is not lost, merely clustered with more machines of his own kind.
And who knows - maybe they'll breed and the INCH/FOOT/YARD/MILE
cluster will have lots of little CENTIMETRES!

So much for the metrication drive!!!!

    Oh well.

181.4STOPIT's VTX database?THROAT::CLARKASC, a mad ScotThu Oct 06 1988 14:453
Can anybody tell me where the STOPIT VTX database is located now?

181.5STOPIT's VTX service comes back from the grave !FOOT::DAWLicensed S.P.G tamerThu Oct 06 1988 16:4420

The VTX Managers account was retrieved yesterday from a dark dank
cellar in the middle of nowhere.

The Text Retrieval Unit have taken over control of the VTX service on
the ADG cluster and all should be well within a week or so. Certain
command procedures and object numbers need to be modified before
the good old STOPIT VTX service can come back from the dead. The
present ADG VTX service will continue to operate until we get the STOPIT
    service going again.

For all those who use the ADG VTX service, those menu options will
be available from the new service, but with a swish, new, updated
    TRU look!!!

If anyone has any problems with the merger of STOPIT and the ADG
cluster concerning VTX, don't hesitate to contact the Text Retrieval
Unit, who will be glad to help
