294.0. "CD players revisted" by BURYST::edmunds (maine() { char jo; }) Tue Jul 23 1991 12:59

I know that there are other topics in here on CD players, but in a
fast-changing market they are quicklyout of date. However, if this note
belongs somewhere else, feel free to move it.

I'm looking to buy a replacement CD player. I currently have an old
Phillips CD104 which is suffering from the "warped pcb" problem. What
I'm after:

	o good sound quality
o direct-entry keypad for track programming
	o A-B repeat
	o remote control

Everything else is optional. I don't really follow the HiFi press much,
so I'd appreciate others' personal or second-hand opinions of what to
consider. I'm happy to spend up to 300 pounds so long as the ends justify that.

Thanks for all opnions..

    re .1...
"They're all into wind up gramophones here so don't expect
     much of a response."

Put something in that interests you and that you think will interest
like minded people, then, instead of leaving it to a few people with
limited areas of interest and knowledge.

If you don't put anything in, don't complain about the lack of notes
    that interest you.

What is it with VAX Notes these days? I thought my basenote was
perfectly reasonable: I was surprised that there was no response
sooner. Thanks for the reply, .1: now I know why no-one else answered -
it seems you get criticised if you do.

I'm sorry I dropped in.

294.4also try NADHAMPS::IVES_JI've got a bad feeling, Mr Tracey!Wed Jul 24 1991 20:3317
woops what have I wondered into. I agree with .1 on the issue of Philps
and Technics, though in addition I've read good reviews of the low
price NAD players which I think are based on the same technology as the
technics. I think it wise to maybe consider players with Digital
Outputs, even down at this price. this way you keep your options open
i.e. you can change the convertor at a later date if you want.

Some would say that a cheap player aint worth using as a transport, but
I'm not so sure. there was a review of various transports a while back
in HFN&RR and a cheap Philps player (under #200) was found to compeat
very favourably with the like of ARCAM, Meridian and WADIA.

I use a Marantz player with outboard DAC, the player uses the basic
philips transport, and I'm very pleased with the result.

    just an idea anyway

Well, I've learnt one thing about wind up gramophones,
namely how to wind them up.

As an earlier reply said - you can buy a very good cd player for less than 200
pounds.

I've got a JVC xl-335 which was 170, has remote control, digital output,
bitstream processing and track control features that I've not bothered to try
out yet. I was considering an equivalently priced Technics model but that was
discontinued (February time) although revamped versions of both makes are now
available again.

Both Technics and JVC models received good reviews for sound quality. The more
expensive versions of the machines had more features (but some review comments
seemed to indicate a deterioration in sound quality).

    Keith!

Have a listen to Denon, the 2560 or the 1560 (if it is still about).
Warm, spacious sound is my impression if 300 smackers is your limit.

If you get sick of it one day, then I guess you could buy a DAC of your
choice, sit tight for a further 5 years and then lash out on that 'last
upgrade' standalone transport and put the Denon into the bedroom.

My personal feeling lies infact some where else! For 300 pounds or less
I would buy a multiplayer to keep the family happy (Denon make one in
the US !) and wait for separate DACs and standalone transports to come
down in price/go up in performance. They are still in their infancy I
feel and I for one am doing just that, keeping my domestic side happy
meanwhile and playing the waiting game for a bit longer.

Hope it gives you another side to the CD story.

    cheers

Thanks to all who responded both here and by mail. It's given me food
for thought; I'm hoping to look and listen to some next week. I'll let
you know whta I decide in the end.

The reply a few back made me think, seeing that my CD player is now 5years old,
and was bought cheap as an end of line job then, it may well need replacing
within the next 5 years !!!!! The main question I had was, does anyone know
whether there is a significant difference in quality between multiplay players
and similarly priced single disc players. The more imprtant quality being
transport quality than over all sound quality, as they will all have a digital
output to allow for the sound to be upgraded when the money is available.

Also, don't assume that the transport has no effect on sound quality.

The transport was what I was mainly enquiring about, even if it didn't sound
like it. If they do have digital output, then in the long term the quality of
the transport is what matters, as a different DAC can be added, if it doesn't
then I would probably not bother with it.
I didn't get a chance to have anything much in the way of a look at it, but I
did see a CD player the other day that was multiplay by having 2 totally
seperate draws. Novel eh ? (or is it ?)
