295.0. "Is this conference going adrift?" by BAHTAT::SALLITT () Thu Jul 25 1991 13:39

This conference seems to be getting a little stale. There also seems to
be an impression that the conference is apparently here to satisfy the
Linn-owning fraternity, 'though a scan through the directory tells a
different story. This seemed to come to a head in topic 294, where a
casual enquirer was turned off the conference by early replies, whilst
a later one really answered the question well.

I have tried staying out of CD-related notes, hoping that the new-world
fraternity would start to build up their own catalogue of topics, but
most CD enquiries seem to go unanswered for weeks. It may be that there
is little interest in digital audio amongst the conference readers, but
    I doubt it.

If this conference gives the impression of an analogue bias, then it is
up to the digital enthusiasts to make the change. Although I personally
have no problems with new-age audio enthusiasts extracting the Michael
from me for my liking of the LP, it doesn't contribute much to the sum
of information in the conference; by all means let's have a laugh, but
let us also have some informed debate.

I would like to see more input from those knowledgable in digital
    audio. How about it, then?

    Well . . .

    I actually agree with .0

I feel the problem is one of the different marketing of CD players vs
    Lp players (:-) ).

because CD players are mostly from the mass market end (Philps marantz
etc) the turnaround time for models is bewildering.

One a noter asks for a reccomendation for a player, if you hav'nt
bought a magazine for a few months then anything you say is certain to
be out of date, which is depressing I know.

Though I like CD as a medium I long for the time when we see truly
classic designs which stay. I'll bet the Meridian and Naim players (and
the Linn when it arrives) will fall into this category.

As CD player performance equals (and exceeds !) LP performance, which I
still acknowledge as the best sound TODAY, I think the conference will
    swing toward CD.

And lets not loose sight of the fact that the other 2/3 of the replay
system (amp & speakers) are common to both.

I like this conference, and I don't feel that it's monopolised by "luddite
vinyl addicts". I find it far more interesting than the AUDIO conference.
Contributors here appear to be interested in music as well as audio,
whereas I find the AUDIO conference a bit equipment-dominated for my taste.

I think the recent episode was a one-off.

295.4What? But this is the Audio conf.????SUBURB::SCREENERRobert Screene, UK Finance EUCThu Jul 25 1991 15:457
I think there's a fair balance to the notes I read here. Users of both
the formats are trying to get the best out of their medium.

It's just that the LP users have to go into greater lengths to optimise.

Re. .-1

Trevor,
Sorry to orrect you but this is the LINN conference, VAXWRK:: is the
KRELL one :-)

But seriously I like this conference the problem, as has been pointed
out is that mid-low end CD players change very other month so this weeks
``BEST BUY'' might only be ``RECOMMENDED'' next month - mind you the rate that
Linn are releaseing products makes me think (Karin, Kremlin, LK100, Trampolinn,
LP-12/Basik etc etc)

PS Why do no-one complete my little trivia quiz - boring old so-and-so's :-)
