352.0. "Cyrus 780s Fails again" by NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJ () Wed Apr 08 1992 12:45

    Hi,

    I have a pair of Cyrus 780s , Pioneer A400 and Technics SP112-L CD
    player. My problem is that I have had a total of 4 base units fail in
    the 780s. The speakers are still under guarantee but I'm getting a
    little tired of dragging the things back every couple of months.

    Has anyone had any similar problems with 780s or other speakers.
    Could a problem elsewhere in the set up be causing the failure?

    Any suggetstions most welcome.

    The dealer has suggested we talk about an alternative set of speakers.
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to appropriate replacements. I really
    like the 780s so I would be looking for a speaker with similar
    characteristics.... Performance and size (perhaps more reliable though!).

    Thanks,

    I've just finished speaking to a friend who's the manager of the
    Altrincham Cleartone Hi-Fi shop. He doesn't know of any bass unit
    problems on the 780 and he sold loads of them. He dems them driven
    very hard, sometimes using Naim 135's. He also said he's never had a
    pair back./

    If your A400 were clipping I'd expect the tweeter to blow. Could be
    you've got a problem elsewhere in your system, maybe the amp. Have
    Mission admitted it's their problem?

    Years ago I had a similar problem with a pair of Goodmans speakers.
    Three or four times Goodmans took them back and fixed them, also took
    my amp, Rotel. They couldn't fine any fault and didn't seem to believe
    the Rotel could be responsible. Only after getting rid of my tape deck
    did the problem go away. I suspect low frequency distortion or mains
    earth loop was the culprit.

352.4Bye Bye trusty 780s...NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJMon Apr 13 1992 17:1719

    Gents,

    Well took them back along with the AMP. Amp OK. speakers sadly not.
    To cut a long story short I changed my speakers for Celestion SL6si's.
    (Plus a small fold of unused notes).

    So far very pleased with my new purchase.

    Regards,
    Jonathan

    Many puzzled looks later I exit
    the shop with a pair of Celestion Sl6si's.
