488.0. "Tape Walkman ?" by KERNEL::HOGGAND () Wed Aug 03 1994 21:27

    Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions for tape walkmans? I am after one,
but it needs to be small (lightweight), jog-proof (as it will be used
when jogging) and have good sound quality with long battery life. Hell,
it has to be perfect! :-)

    Dave.

There is always the Sony Pro-Walkman, but heavy for Jogging! It
has as good or better performance than many domestic cassette decks,
especially in the area of wow and flutter.

Um? Jogging and weight-lifting? Possibly, but I was rather looking for
a slimmer model. I've always thought that Awia and Sony were good bets
in this area; are there other makes worth looking at?

Purely for interest, but how much does the Pro-Walkman cost?

You see joggers holding walkmans in their sweaty palms, does this
reduce the 'jogging' that the tape suffers as opposed to having it
    clipped to a belt?

    Cheers,

I paid 260 for my D6C and 60 pounds for the Microphone, but the quality
of recording and playback is second to none, Most of the Hi Fi mags
still rate it as the best you can buy!!!

I've been enjoying the D6C Pro for about 6 years now, and I would
say definitely it isn't for jogging, too heavy, but it's the best
walkman you can have for portable music. I changed the cans comming
with it for MDR-V7 which are very suitable. Also is the best media
in price/performance since tapes are cheap and dubbing from CDs at
home provides excellent quality recordings. It's also a very compact
medium, since you can dub 2 CDs in a 90' tape (at least that was true
with LPs, now is becoming more difficult). DAT is of higher quality
but it's less reliable and has more expensive media. MD is more
convenient (direct access to tracks) but still expensive. DCC is bulky
(though there are new smaller models now), but you CANNOT record normal
tapes, just play them, and the new media is also expensive.
For jogging I'd go for an upmarket model from SONY or AIWA considering
size in first place and battery life in second.
