256.0. "Deltec 1 bit DACs" by HKGACT::CHAKLEE (Easy Going) Tue Feb 12 1991 08:57

Deltec has two bitstream DACs in the market -- PDM series II and Little bit.

Both are 1 bit 384 times using Philips' 7350 chip. I heard both of them and
found a little difference. They both give quality music reproduction.
However, the price of PDM is almost double of the other.

Any comments on these two DACs?

     What are their costs and do you know how they compare to other external
     DAC's?

     Cheers,
     Robert.

    I've heard the PDM II, fabulous sound stage and detail. Needs up to
    48 hours to warm up. Can sound horrible from cold.

    I've yet to hear a bitstream that rivals multibit for depth and
    especially control of bass. This matters for say, Phil Collins,
    whereas bitstream scores on quieter and classical music.

 Januarys What HiFi has a review of various external DACs and CD transports,
the Deltec DACs being among them. I will endeavour to remember to bring it in
on Monday.

Re: .1

In Hong Kong, PDM II cost about $9000 and the Little Bit is about $5000. That
is equivalent to about US$1125 and US$625.

For price/performance, PDM II is probably the best choice.

    By depth I meant how deep the bass goes. Soundstage is usually hard to
    fault with bitstream.

 What hi-fi have this to say about the Deltecs.

Little Bit.
~~~~~~~~~~~
	On technical grounds alone this new convertor looks set to cause a stir.
You see, not only is deltecs 'little bit' remarkably cheap at just 300 pounds
but it also plays host to the most advanced of Philips bitstream DACs.
................... Listening to this unit is the hi-fi equivalent to having
your ears syringed. All forms of music seem that much more immediate and tactile
, the stereo images of individual performers located with pin point accuracy in
a deep and broad soundstage. The sound is so very clean and precise that many
other DACs on the market may seem vague or lacking in purpose by comparison....
...................In short there's nothing at or around this price point that's
got the faintest chance of competeing - in sonic terms at least - with the
Little Bit. It even gives the more expensive PDM1 a run for its money to the
point where in most systems at least, you'd be hard pressed to justify the extra
300 pounds.
PDM1 series II.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

	.......................... But remember this : the PDM1 is brutally
revealing of faults elesewhwere in the system, particularly in respect of the
speed, clarity and general fortitude of partnering amplifiers. In common with
the little bit, it employs Philips' top bitstream converters running here not
at 256x but at a massive 384x oversampling.
	There's nothing fundamentally new about the sound of the PDM1 for it
shares the same effortlessness, lucidity and conviction thats become a hallmark
of all Deletc products. You're either going to take to these qualities or shy
away from their stark reality!

Re: .5

Even Phillips have no 7350 chip products in the market at this moment.
The competitions, I think, come from the low end DAC like Adcam Blackbox and
the higher end DAC like Wadia. They just fill the gap with a little more
expensive and much better quality.

Re: .6

Thanks for the info.

    It sounds like the 7350 is not in mass production.
    I can't beleive that there are many folks who are buying
    such exotic equipment.

    How long is has it been out?
