743.0. "*Hatchwarren Beer Festival*" by KERNEL::COFFEYJ (The Uk CSC Unix Girlie.) Thu Apr 07 1994 19:09

I realise this'll get rapidly ratholed but I think it's worth asking
since I might also find a useful answer.

Does anyone know how you go about getting advanced tickets
for the Hatchwarren (no, don't laugh) beer festival?

It was really nice last year so I intend to make sure I
have a handful of tickets for the Saturday this year.

You can get tickets from the box office of the new theatre
and arts entertainment centre currently being built in
Cliddesen.

It's before June 23rd.

But I was only saying that because you asked me to,
really it's just after June 23rd.

gettin a free glass, didn't realise not having a glass was part of the
equation. Still I'd've probalby still bought a glass anyway...

Can someone explain the advantage of paying to go to a beer
festival and then paying again for each pint I drink, to
just going to the pub for nothing and paying for each pint
I drink?

Thanks

Depending on the organisers and the festival:

Your entry fee can entitle you to 'n' free drinks.
The variety of stuff available at a fest should be much greater than
    at the pub.
The price you pay once you get in is less than at the pub.
You get a free glass (I gave up trying to type comemerative 'cos I
couldn't figure out how to spell it!)

.9 don't worry you go to the pub.

the idea is that the beer is less crap than the stuff fit for a litter
tray served in most southern wimps watering holes.

this one also had a band last year so you could always pretend you
were paying to go to a gig and drinking lots as a side line.

Anyway, I heard a vicious rumour that the band last year is part
responsible for this years being cancelled, too many Hatchwarren
residents complained about the noise like Blockbuster Video
won't be going ahead either after residents complained.

I hope it's a rumour, don't know if anyone else's heard about it?

Last year it was a bunch of females, not too bad musically, though a
little loud - I can't remember what sort of music it was so it can'tve
been that bad :-)

They went down quite well with all the male attendees I think,
seemed to take an inordinately long time choosing their beers...

bbq was a dramatic improvement on last year

sunday lunch was nice too with 50p for a ploughmans

30 beers only managed 7 before the football started.

not so good logo on the glasses this year and no t-shirts!

beers were 60% good, 30% not my taste, 10% naff.

bbq was just as awful as last year, but improved as the night went on.

didn't get invited for sunday lunch so unable to comment.

good turnout and good profit, so they are considering another one in October,

>good turnout and good profit, so they are considering another one in October,

I thought that was going to be the February Octoberfest...
In fact I'm sure it was because I remember telling the chap serving I
wasn't drunk, could I have a beer towel please (he said yes),
no I didn't know where I'd been all his life (just cause I
thought an ideal picnic blanket was dozens of beer towels sewn
together) and could they please make the Octoberfest the 18th
because that's my birthday.

>...it was very sunny too. Ask Jeff Erlam!

It could have been an allergic reaction to the beer...

Presumably, if it's based on the German idea and hence
the spelling of "Oktober", there'll be none of that
warm flat ale rubbish and good old pure German lager
brewed to the age old tradition and by laws. Is there
a vegetarian equivalent to Lederhosen?

Well, since it was me who used the German spelling you're a
fool if you read more into it than "jo decided to spell in German"

We already know you're a lager lout, really the re-enforcement of
the image isn't necessary.

Have you tried rubber underwear?

As I said it's only me who's chosen to spell it Oktober, so I have
no idea on anything other than it's around the autumnal period of the
year and liable to have some kind of liquids if the rumours I hear are
true.

I could have called it an ochtoobeer fesht.... I wonder what assumptions
could have been had from that?

I've given it up actually - until pay rises come back in fashion.

Yes, but only over the top of my trousers. They get too sweaty
otherwise.

When's your leaving do then (if you think it's anywhere in the
forseeable future you must be going) ;-)

No, but I've been there a couple of times.

Well, I went on the Saturday night. The hall was quite empty
when I arrived at six, but soon filled up quite nicely. I don't
know if it's just me, but I dislike these 'community centre'
venues immensely. It's like drinking in a jumble sale hall,
	zero atmosphere.

Anyway, onto the beers. Started off with a few bitters unknown
to me, which I rated as average. Tasty, but in my opinion, not
worth a second try. Tried the strongest beer, which was a 7.7%
barley wine jobbie that almost had to be chewed. Onto some light
stuff to take the iccky taste away. Finally settled on my favourite,
something called 'Slaughter Porter', from which I didn't look back.

Band were a two piece called 'Original Gravity'. Played predictable
Richard Digence/Ralph McTell stuff, some people liked it, not
my cup-of-tea, but then again I expect the Ozrics were booked up.

Didn't attempt to try the food (not after last year!), no t-shirts
to report on, and the half-pint glass was acceptably different.

Finally staggered out about ten-ish, promising to come back for
the lunchtime session the next day, but didn't actually make it.

Overall, an interesting time, but still not as good as the
	Chineham Beer festival.
