621.0. "BET Caterers" by KERNEL::SMITHERSJ (Living on the culinary edge....) Mon Mar 15 1993 15:53

Well, has anyone sampled the delights of the new caterers yet in
    Viables canteen?

Lovely....... Could someone just answer a few little questions me
and the rest of the CSC are asking?

What happened to the salad bits like tuna, cheese, pork pies etc?

    Why is there no choice?

Why has the price increased 35%?

Why are there no sandwiches made to order?

Why aren't there any omelettes now made to order apart from those
    for vegetarians

Why aren't there any vegetarian alternatives (I believe this is
because the cook has just handed in her notice!! - The shape of
    things to come?)

Good start BET - can't wait for tomorrow.

By the way, (its probably because of the lovely weather) but the
canteen staff outweighed the people eating in there just now.

 Where's the gravy???

I had to have custurd with my chips today - never again!

65% less choice for 35% more price - Wot a bargain.
621.2Time to hit the chocolate machine I think!COMICS::SUMMERFIELDWalk on sunny side other side wetMon Mar 15 1993 16:4111
What happened to cheap (edible!) snacks? The sarnies
are few and plain, no jacket tatties and the proper
meals are *really* expensive! (Us I.T.s have to watch
the pennies!). Apparently only people with 'special
requirements' now qualify for omlettes!

Oh, well, gives me a good excuse to have loads of
chocolate for lunch!! ;o)

I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, you know early days
yet and all that... but I have a nasty suspicion that this is it. The
shape of lunch times to come. I sampled the mince with yorkshire pud
( yes that famous old english meal ..???) And found both elements
tasteless and the corrugated carrot doing a good impression of
corrugated cardboard. Oh come on, it's a joke right?? Claire Rock
is gong to come running round with a red nose on in a minute shouting
'ha ha, got you...' ....please Claire??

BTW, Mark really *did* have custard with his chips!
I was witness!

He's warped!

(PS - He did say afterwards that it didn't taste too
good! Mind you, I don't know if he was talking about
the chips, the custard or just the combination!)

Hmmm ... most of the unix people yesterday took one look at the canteen fare
and headed for the GL or Burger King (the GL's looking like a better and
better place to get lunch).

Okay ... it was day 1. They've had their chance to make a good impression
and blew it. Lets just hope that they get better! I hope everyone complaining
in this conference have put pen to those catering survey forms (those are
the red ones which don't contain a selection from 1 to 7 on them, not
the white ones which do) and LET THE CANTEEN KNOW!!!

Does anyone really know why we changed from halliday? They never really
knew that chips should have some taste ... but the minted lamb pie was
excellent (and so were the other pies). I hope BET bring back the old cook.

BTW: Mark ... I knew you were warped, but ... Custard and chips???

..Les...

Well sortof. I post via the notes-news gateway, a system which allows people
who use USEnet news (which is a store-and-forward notes-style conferencing
thingy) to read notes and post into notesconferences.

I find the access times for news are so much quicker than notes that I
can scan many more conferences than normal (I also get access to external
newsgroups which tend to be more lively and wierd than internal stuff).

If you're interested .. check out upsar::news-backbone, there'll be an
explanation of the gateway in there & if you're into the newsreading
software try ufp::xrn (for Unix) or clo::vnews (for VMS).There's about
6000 newsgroups.

Real football or American Football?

PS: If you feel this is in the wrong place could a friendly moderator please
    move it for me. Thanks.

Is it me, or is the food just as bad now as it was when BET started?

I've tried to be patient, but so far have seen no improvement. No
that's a lie, it does look better, it just doesn't taste any better!.

The pie today had too much salt in it, and the carrots only looked like
    carrots.

    Dave,
(Unimpressed, despite having given them the chance !!).

The chips are better than Hallidays ... at least they have some taste, but
i'm not impressed by the dishwater they're serving as gravy!

On the plus side ... the breakfasts are a lot better, there always seems to be
bacon and sozzys around when I go down there (its nice to have danishs
available too (but not for the waistline :-)).

I've also noticed that the vegetables do not have the "guts" boiled
out of them now...they are actually crispy - much nicer IMO - probably
    not to everyone's taste though!

On the whole I think the food tastes a lot better but the portions have
shrunk considerably which makes the price increase even more
unreasonable - unfortunately the better taste does not make up for
    this!

They have changed the coffee to something cheaper and nastier. And
take a close look at the little cartons of 'cream'. It is actually
a glucose syrup and vegetable fat mixture. Mmm, lovely in coffee..pah.
Apparently these are cheaper. So why has the coffee gone up??
