6.0. "PUBS" by FOOT::WRIGHT (I AM a member of this company) Fri Jul 29 1988 16:10

Well I'm surprised Dave Kerrell hasn't started this, (maybe he knows them
    all anyway :-) )

Where are some decent pubs for lunch time drinking, eating and
drinking. Obviously (?) they must be fairly near to Basingstoke
(preferably near the Crescent). Say about 10-15 minutes car drive?

The Swan - Sherborne St. John - not bad, though it used to be a
great pub before Whitbread did it up. Nice garden for summer drinking,
reasonable selection of food though quite pricey.

Magnum's - real ale bar near Snamp. House

Jekyll & Hyde, Stratfield Turgis on A33 - I think it's changed hands
since I last went. Used to sell Badgers Beer, which is excellent

    Jolly Farmer - Cliddesden

The Mole, Monk Sherborne - quite a way out but I seem to remember
    it was pretty good (Morlands??)

The Three Barrels, Winklebury - town pub, sells Marstons beer

White Hart - Sherfield on Loddon - Courage

can't remember the rest... why not try some out and report back?

    Mike.

The Bolton Arms - Old Basing _ Courage

The best lunchtime food I reckon is at the Millstone (incorrectly

that Whibread have bought/are buying both the Millstone and Barton's

The Fox at Ellisfield is a good one as mentioned earlier. If it
is the one I am thinking of, it is out towards Alton. Turn right
at the Golden Lion leaving Jays close, and then right at the next
roundabout, then just follow that road out of town, it takes
you through Heckfield, and it used to go right past the Fox after
a sharp right, but then they built a new piece of road that bypasses
it that you have to turn off of.

    Many regards,

    Steve

    Nah, go this way....

Out on to the Alton road (after hackwood roundabout) first right
to Cliddesden. 2 miles to Cliddesden, at Village Pond turn left
up hill - keep going passed fields and village school on right down
hill - up hill to Ellisfield - Just keep going and on your right
    you will find the Fox.

have visited once since new landlord and there was no change to
    menu or prices!

Ok ok, so I was holding my mental map upside down when I said
"Heckfield" instead of "Herriard". Also I did state a couple of
    disclaimers.

    SO GIVE ME A BREAK!

There is still a pub out past Herriard and before you get to Lasham
Airfield on the Alton road, the beer was good and the food was good.

re .20

I defer to Lucie's directions & this is actually the way that I
returned from the Fox on Tuesday after lunch. I went out there by the route
that I originally gave, got mildly lost & realised that it was better to go via
Cliddesdon. My excuse is that I live in Axford which is south of Ellisfield so
have only ever approached it from that direction.

To return to the subject of the Fox. The food, beer & ambience seems
unchanged despite change in landlord. The cat who used to roam among the tables
has gone but there is now an English Mastiff which is one of the largest dogs
that I have ever seen and is only 10 months old and not yet fully grown.

    3. Bar food - big, well-cooked S&K pies (read black-on-the-top for
