119.0. "HELP: users at PC's mailing with Verity's MEMO" by MXOV06::RICHTER () Tue Feb 25 1992 20:42

Hi, this is DEC at Mexico City.

A customer of ours wants a bid from us for a LAN with PC's served by a
Unix server over tcp (plus std desktop productivity tools) ... let's say
    "no sweat, so far".

They want the PC users to be able to use MEMO "by way of logging to
their 3090 through a 3270 tty emulator". They have a MITEC box that
brings their ibm to tcp and, it looks like MITEC provides also a 3270
    emulator over tcp ....

Now, we think it may make sense to offer as an alternative a mail
gateway (offload their mainframe from the increasing amount of
networked PC users wanting to communicate among themselves and
through MEMO, with other people WANwide).

Can MRMEMO be (part of) the solution?
In a tcp / unix(ultrix) environment? (we can justify the inclusion of
vax/vms servers "ie, dedicated black boxes", however they would
have to coexist gracefully in this tcp/unix environment)

Any comment/suggestion will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

Julio Richter, Mexico SI/SS (still aka EIS)

Hello,

correct, DECnet-ULTRIX and (for installation) DECnet-ULTRIX Unsupported
Software Subset.

ULTRIX -- MEMO
to: sn_u=memo_user@sn_l=memo_loc.memo_mbx.umc

MEMO -- ULTRIX
VAX.USER@umc<@node>

cheers

    Michael,

Are you sure about this syntax?

What does UMC do with the SN_U and SN_L elements?

    cheers,

Stefan,

>> Are you sure about this syntax?

Yes, see Ultrix Mail User Guide, page 2-20

ULTRIX -- IBM SNADS User (that's similar to MRMEMO, right?)
to: sn_username=user@sn_location=node.mrs.mrs_node.umc

>> What does UMC do with the SN_U and SN_L elements?

UMC passes the elements to the Message Router

cheers,
    Michael

119.5Well, you have a lot of addressing options...EEMELI::MITTSPhased out...Fri Feb 28 1992 17:3540

Well Bjorn, I am a bit confused, nevertheless what I think I'm getting
clear is that we better wait and let them start by logging to the
mainframe with terminal emulation to run MEMO from their PC's.

Then wait for what is comming, mainly X.400 mail, either your suggestion
or (also possible in the summer, although not clear if it will support
tcp) All-in-1 Mail for Ultrix ... of course, asumming X.400 support by
    MEMO.

    ... making sense?
