3945.0. "DOVE?" by SPOOK::ORME (MadVax) Thu Jun 15 1995 21:47

I have just seen an electronic newsletter stating that digital had one
awards for the Hi-Note computer and the DOVE and BABY DOVE PDAs. Anyone
like to tell me what a DOVE is?

I don't understand why people cannot just answer the question and then
    give the pointer?

Dove and Baby Dove are Digital version of the Personal Digital
       Assistant.

With the HiNote Ultra PC system, innovation came in its
lightness, thinness, ergonomic design, and the high performance
packed into such a small package.

Dove and Baby Dove next-generation personal
           digital assistants (PDAs).

for more information if your so inclined see HUMANE::PDA, topic 71.

the reason is that nobody knows! When the Livewire article hit, I sent
mail to Mr. Hanson asking for info, haven't heard back yet.

Brought to you by the same folks that gave us "Rainbow", I assume.

Dove brings to mind a scented bath soap or a bird. Nothing else.

Have a customer that is interested in specs, etc. after seeing the same
business week article. This customer has about $100MM of Digital
    currently installed worldwide.

I'll say it again, there is no such animal as a Dove.

Dove was an AD project on mobile computing focussed on a slate-oriented
computing device. The mockup design for this device is what won the
award. The project ended last summer, and the device was not productized.

    ***************************************************************************

    My take:

Brilliant. First the Alpha notebook, now a PDA. We gee up the customers
by publicly demonstrating hot new toys (and even winning a design award
for one of them!), then disappoint them by killing the project. I don't
contend that there may be sound business reasons for killing off the
projects; Tadpole haven't exactly gone supersonic so far with their
attempts at an Alpha notebook, and the PDA market has never taken off
in the way many people anticipated. But if we aren't going to do them,
why are they getting as far as publicly demonstrated prototypes (with
most of the design costs spent?), before being killed off? Surely the
decision as to whether or not a project is a viable business
proposition should be made *before* it is publicly demonstrated? If we
aren't going to make them, we shouldn't p*** off actual, as well as
potential, customers by showing them shiny new toys, then telling them
they can't have one, ever. I suppose the damage is not likely to be
great, but I can't see how this can possibly improve DEC's image.

      If BP is still reading this conference, maybe he'd like to explain;
didn't he demonstrate the Alpha notebook prototype?

    Ken -

    	Tell me about it.

I spend an inordinate amount of Digital's time explaining to
customers why we really are not as stupid as we try to appear.

BTW, "Dove" is pronounced close to the German word "doof", which means
simple-minded. Seems to be a perfect name for this - cancelled - project.
