3921.0. "Cannot find EMDS" by ODIXIE::DWYERR () Tue Jun 06 1995 14:56

There used to be a database accessible via VTX called EMDS. It
contained marketing information such as company name, sic code,
equipment installed, etc. VTX EMDS does not work any longer. Is
anyone aware if the functionality exists somewhere else?

3921.1EMDS is gone, but it's spirit lives on...CSSE::HALLGRENTue Jun 06 1995 17:04122
Hi,

I used to be the manager of EMDS. EMDS was "de-installed" (to use the
systems equivalent of TFSO) quite a while ago. Attached is a message that
I put together at that time (pardon the tense) which explains what happend
to EMDS and where you may turn for help in accessing market data now. In
addition there is a note attached regarding a system that was developed to
help fill the void for D&B data users.

I hope this helps.

-Chris

p.s. I believe continued funding for the CI data (regardless of how you
access it) is in question right now. If your organization depends on CI
data and you have not participated in the funding process you should
contact Renate Baptiste @AKO.

WHY IS EMDS BEING SHUT DOWN?

EMDS has been carried along without a true business sponsor for almost a
year now. Given Digital's new divisional/business unit structure, it
is less likely than ever that funding for the application will be found.
On top of that, the application is both broken and sorely in need of
enhancements.

WHY NOW?

Of course there is no good time to discontinue an application that still
has active users. However, given that EMDS is now incompatible with
current versions of layered software, and that the VMS accounts on which
EMDS resides are up for renewal, the issue seems to have been forced.

WHERE CAN ONE FIND SIMILAR INFORMATION?

The Digital Library Network (DLN) locations have experts who can do
on-line searches for you. Any fees incurred in the process will be
passed on to your cost center. Call DTN 297-5361 or (508) 467-5361.
Or send an e-mail to MROA::MARKET describing your request.

...OR, TO EQUIP YOURSELF...

CI MARKET INSIGHT is a PC/Windows based software tool that allows you
to run queries directly against CI's database. The tool is easy to use
and provides much more functionality than EMDS (you can finally get
at CI's "buying plans" data). The tool allows you to submit queries
directly against CI's database via modem, or against a local copy of the
data on CD Rom. In either case a usage fee is charged to your cost center.
To obtain a copy of Market Insight you'll need to cut a P.O. covering the
software and usage fees. The P.O. should include the following:
The Digital Vendor Code for Computer Intelligence is 003-69-2000-00 and
the Basic Order Agreement number (BOA) is #5346. Contact Jerry Troyer
at Computer Intelligence in Boston for more information (617) 375-4257.

DUNS DIRECT ACCESS is a PC/DOS based tool that allows you submit request
directly against D&B's database of roughly 9 million business
establishments. (EMDS provided access to roughly 3.8 million - those with
at least fiveemployees.) The tool requires a PC with a modem. But
minimal disk space and training are needed. The software license and usage
fees were bundled into the base contract with D&B. However, as you use the
tool, keep in mind that Digital will be charged next year, if this year's
usage level goes beyond that which was estimated. To obtain a copy of Duns
Direct Access (DDA) send requests with your name and mailing address to
Charlie Flint @MRO.

PURPOSE: Enable you to get quick demographic data about a company
(Business Name, address, # of employees, annual revenue
reported to
Wall Street, SIC - industry, contact name, phone #, etc.)

PROCESS: SET HOST HAMSTR
and enter the username GUEST (no password required)

Select Run View1 by typing choice A

Type the option number from the list below

                30 (D&B: SITE # - SINGLE SITE LOCATION)
                35 (D&B: ULTM # - ALL SITES)

                40 (D&B: NAME - BUSINESS NAME)
                41 (D&B: SIC - STANDARD INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION)
42 (D&B: PHONE - AREA CODE AND NUMBER)

HINTS: The phone option is useful if a business name search fails
and the phone # is known or accessible.

Once a company is found and displayed, you can enter 1
1 (referring to the first of the 2 entreis displayed or
2 (referring to the second of 2 entries displayed)
to get ALL related sites under the Ultimate duns #.

DEFINITION: The ultimate duns # is the top level universal business ID
(much like a persons social security #). A business with
a single location will have the site duns # be the same as
            the ultimate duns #.

The multiple sites of a large corporation will each have their
own unique site duns #, and they all roll to the same ultimate
duns #. The ultimate duns # and site duns # are equal at the
            headquarters location.
