3904.0. "Nightly Business Report - Logo" by MIMS::SANDERS_J () Fri May 26 1995 16:30

The Nightly Business Report is sponsored by Digital. The show begins
with a Digital advertisement using a quivering, dark gray Digital logo
over a scratchly looking light gray background.

Why does this ad not use the Digital "burgandy" logo? After all, we
are required to use it in all slide presentations. I obviously do not
    understand the branding campaign.

I think if you're doing a color ad, the logo has to be burgundy. But
for ads in media that are B&W or greyscale, eg. newspapers, it
obviously doesn't have to be burgundy. Since those TV ads are
greyscale monochrome (to grab attention in a sea of color ads), they
can get away with the non-burgundy logo. At least that's my
    understanding and two cents-worth.

3904.4Logo treatment for NBRAKOCOA::SIMLERFri May 26 1995 19:2317
The Digital logo treatment in our Nightly Business Report
corporate underwriter credit was intended to be consistent
with the Corporate Brand Advertising launched last Thanksgiving.

Digital plans to evolve the look and messaging of the Brand
TV commercials. Again, we will want our NBR credit to reflect
    this same approach.

However, the corporate proprietary color for the Digital logo
is burgundy and should be used in all communications worldwide
whenever possible. This advertising logo approach was an
    exception.

    Hope this is helpful.

    >whenever possible.

Do you know what color our corporate proprietary color for the Digital
logo is when it's broadcast on television? It's red. Not burgundy,
definitely not Digital proprietary -- it's red. And if you happen to
see the logo in a bank of TVs (like in a department store) you'll see
that it's lots of different shades of red -- not the official corporate
    proprietary color.

The "geniuses" who spent vast amounts of time and money on creating
our "new" logo clearly did not understand the pitfalls of electronic
    information transmission.

3904.7Basics....STOWOA::RYAN_JWed May 31 1995 14:1430
Thanks Dave, for adding to this note.

Seems to me that we should get away from any effort that is tied to a
transient effort like advertising campaigns. To continually push the
one Digital ID - such as the burgundy logo - would helps us in the long
    run.

Some of the basics of follow-through on the corporate ID change have
not, in my opinion, been done to full effect. Examples:

    1. Digital employment ad in the Boston Globe ~ one month ago with the
       old style (square dots) logo

    2. Non-descript building lobbies - I was at DDB Needham recently and
they have a very cost-effective technique for signage in their lobby
       - lets take some foam-core boards and run out the burgundy logo and
mount them in every lobby - add recent ads too - and keep that portion
updated. This effort would only stay in place till we can afford
       proper signs.

    3. I was at a seminar at Babson College (Digital is one of the
sponsors) - my name tag had DEC on it

We need to complete the basics of this ID change - the effort requires
    focus and leadership.

Actually, based on the vast audience acceptance of "Digital"
as our name (NOT!), I think we'd do better to build a slightly
  different identity.

  To me, the ideal identity:

o Would be short and memorable, preferrably one syllable
and would roll off your tongue instead of getting stuck
on the roof of your mouth all the time

    o WOULDN'T BE A VERY COMMON ADJECTIVE

o Wouldn't be shared with at least a dozen other vendors,
all of them trying to build mindshare at the same time

o Would already be in common usage among our customers,
reviewers, and other interested parties (not to mention
      employees)

o Would be easy and inexpensive to integrate into our
      product names.

I didn't mean to bring up Digital vs DEC. We need one identity -

My note was from the POV of having the decision made on the name and
the lack of follow-through. If we changed it (the name) we would
probably still have the lack of commitment on letting everyone know.

But my point, made tongue-in-cheek (or somewhere) though it was,
is that WE HAVE "pushed the hell" out of Digital, but it's a
foolish name to begin with (for all the reasons I cited), so
people logically refuse to use it.

Years after we decided to call ourselves "Digital", we're *STILL*
"DEC" to everyone who knows us and loves us. We ought to go with
the flow and accept that that's the name we'll forever be known
by, at least until we invent a non-adjective like "Agrimark" or
"Navistar" or "Nike" or "Reebok" or "Dell" or "Coke" or "Apple"
or "Xerox"... (By the way, read all of those aloud. Then say
"Digital". In three sylables, you'll know why we're still "DEC".)

me really well always seem to call me Stephen...but they will introduce
me to new people as 'steve'...it is an interesting phenomonon...I think it
has a lot to do with trying to be informal...

I kind of view the Digital/DEC names the same way...and I think a lot of
customers do....I think DEC is to a lot of people an informal nick name...
the burgundy Digital logo is more former and 'proper', and I think this
is getting through the customers...IMHO. Therefore either name is used
depending on the setting.

When people ask me where I work...I often have to say both Digital and DEC
before they recognize the company as the computer maker...which is fine with
me...being known by two names doubles the possibility of association.

No, it halves the possibility.

For example, if a business-news article mentions "Digital", one might
not associate it with the company one knows as "DEC". And vice-versa.

To take this rathole a bit more down the hole... if Digital is going to
stick with the "Digital" name - then there is some work to do. I
continue to hear things described as "digital" this and that, not
associated with our company. Digital communication, digital recording,
digital TV, etc. There are also a few companies that also use Digital as
their first name, such as Digital Analysis Corp. If the public could be
conditioned to thing of "Digital Equipment Corp" everytime they heard the
word Digital, then we'd be getting some where. Without that association,
our own use of Digital gets fuzzed in the many meanings of the word.
DEC would be better because it is unique.

"Digital" is also a poor choice because, as an adjective, it's
  ambiguous in a headline. Consider:

    "DIGITAL SYSTEM KILLS RESEARCHER"

    "NEW DIGITAL COMPRESSION ALGORITHM ANNOUNCED"

Which one is about us? Both? Neither?

Using "DEC" would make this unambiguous.

The folks who've latched onto the three-syllables versus one
rathole have missed my point. Let me try again.

"Digital" is hard to pronounce clearly, especially up against
other words. Maybe it's just me, but try it. Right out loud,
say "Digital". Do you want to slur the end away?

"DEC" (pronounce "DECK", BTW) is easy.

  "NEC" (pronounced "Enn-Eee-See") is easy.

  "Nike" (pronounced "Nie-Key") is easy.

"Coke" is easy. Little kids in Guang Dong province would probably
know how to say this one!

  "IBM" (pronounced "Eye-Bee-Em") is easy.

"Xerox" is pretty easy, but the trailing glottal stop (did I
get that right?) is a bit rough.

  "Dell" is really easy.

  "Gateway" is too.

  Now say "Digital" again.

In order to convince whatever body allows such things, we were asked by

Started as "Fifth Ave" and "Sixth Ave"; 6th was renamed to "Avenue of the
Americas," but everybody still called it 6th Avenue; a few years ago it was
renamed back to 6th Avenue with a "nickname" of "Avenue of the Americas," like
7th Avenue is called "Fashion Avenue" and Avenue C is called "Loisaida Avenue."
(Two points if you can decipher that last one.)

3904.36Please sir, "Just the facts"VORTEX::SDTPMM::SMICKVan C. Smick - Branding & Naming Mgr (381-0781)Fri Jun 02 1995 13:1459
First off, I apologize for furthering this rat hole, but I think it is
important to get the facts on the table wrt the digression on Digital
    vs DEC.

Second, let me put my cards face up on the table. I'm one of _those_
people in the "Brand Group" that some members of this conference have
suggested are of little or no value to Digital. In fact, I'm the person
who is responsible for attempting to make our product names make some
sense -- from a customer perspective. As such I'm working with each of
the business units to migrate away from DEC-prefixed product names,
trying to get Investor Services to stop making up phone numbers with
DEC in them, getting rid of AXP, etc.

So I appreciate all the pointers to places within the company that
still use DEC. Feel free to send examples to me -- SDTPMM::SMICK or
    VAN SMICK @ZKO.

However, the never-ending discussion about why Digital vs DEC is real
old. I recently wrote an article on this for all product management and
marketing -- so in an attempt to provide some insight and perhaps
stop/slow the rehashing, here are the facts:

    1. Surveys have been done of customers and not-yet customers and there
is lots of confusion about Digital being a different company than
DEC. In fact 33% of the market and 25% of our customers thought they
were two different companies in 1993. Similar customer confusion has
shown-up in more recent customer surveys.

    2. Senior management realized that having a dual personality was not
beneficial -- among other things it meant that any ad for Digital
or a DEC-prefixed product was lost on 33% of the market place.
Likewise a positive comment by an analysts would be lost on 33% of
       the market.

    3. Focus groups were held in major countries in 1993 (I think 6 but am
not sure) to determine which name, DEC or Digital, had the better
       connotation.

    4. Across all the countries the consensus was the name Digital connoted
a larger company, a more global company, and a more impressive
       company.

    5. We can not trademark Digital because, as you have pointed out, it is
a generic term used widely in the industry. This is clearly a
negative aspect to the decision. The logo is registered and from a
product naming perspective that is sufficient.

So senior management made a decision to go with Digital and -- to the
best of my knowledge -- there is no support for revisiting it.

Given that, I'm working to eliminate all the DEC-prefixed names that we
can -- realizing that some name changes would be too costly, or do not
make sense due to product status (maintenance, retiring, selling off).

I hope this sheds some light on this subject. Rather than continuing
the digression in this note, feel free to send me mail. But please note
that I will not spend time rehashing the decision. It was made and
until/unless it is changed I'm working to implement it.

You're right -- the discussion is "real old". But it won't

I don't know who the focus groups interviewed; it certainly
wasn't the people I've overheard discussing us.

And we certainly didn't study how we're referred to in the trade
press. (By the way, their business is CLEAR CONCISE COMMUNICATION.)

Management made a mistake. Management won't admit it. So we all
struggle on with this rebranding campaign, a campaign that is
doomed to failure for the perfectly sensible reason that
"Digital" is confusing while "DEC" isn't.

All the rebranding efforts in the world won't clothe this emperor.

Is there any wonder why the customer is confused? Were they confused

Management CAUSED the dual personality. Everyone, quite literally
EVERYONE, who knew us, knew us as DEC, and most still do... Management
decided to change that and sell us as Digital instead. But, just making
the decision does NOT implement the decision... and they have failed to

So? Did any customers (here or in six major countries (what's a
"major" country, anyway?) actually come to DEC and suggest the change?
Or did DEC go to the customers and say "this is what we want to do..."
Is or was the name change a RESPONSE to market pressures? Or was it
	the brain-child of some marketeer?

Of course it does. And maybe the right thing to do is to change the
name... but, did you ask if those same customers would be more or less
inclined to buy our products based on what our name was? Did anyone
consider that changing from DEC to Digital could be (and did become)
confusing... leaving many with the thought that DEC (with whom many
dealt) was gone, and not hearing about Digital? Sure, we are putting
advertisements in news print and on the air NOW, but, DEC became Digital
	over two years ago!

What senior management? Are they/he/she still with us? Senior manage-
ment also once dictated that we in the U.S. would be paid bi-weekly.

RE: .36 "Van C. Smick - Branding & Naming Mgr"

First off, let me say "Welcome". There are lots of discussions which go on
in this notes file which do not include the decision makers, so anytime we
can find out the real facts and the logic used in the decision making from
people who were actually involved, the better for the discussion.

I read through the results of the survey you took in 1993, and kept saying,
"Yes, that matches what I know of my customers, yes, yes, *HUH* DEAD WRONG!".
I cannot understand what focus group got point 4, as follows:

> 4. Across all the countries the consensus was the name Digital connoted
> a larger company, a more global company, and a more impressive
> company.

People who don't know us at all are confused by the generic attributes of the
word "Digital". People who do know us are still confused by the generic
attributes, and therefore use DEC as an unambiguous reference. So I cannot
comprehend those results.

I understand and applaud your plea to move on. I have never referred to us
as DEC since I began interacting with customers, except in the following cases:

1) When I say Digital and get a blank look back, so then I say DEC and the
customer now understands. I then use the word Digital from that point on.

2) When I refer to DECpcs, DECstations, DEChubs, DECrouters, etc.

As a good corporate citizen I will and do follow the corporate guidelines that
you setup, and always use Digital except as listed above. But as a good
corporate citizen I also must make you aware of life in the field as I see it,
which is that in my experience, **NO** customer refers to us as Digital, except
as a concession to people like myself who insist on calling us Digital. And
then they only do it about half the time when talking to people like myself
(ie, they say "DEC, uh, Digital"). And when I refer to us as Digital, the
customer usually gives me a slightly amused smile as they recognize that I am
following the corporate party line in the face of market/customer reality.

FYI, FWIW, and IMHO.

This is not quite true. I actually met ONE customer, a long
long time ago, who was confused about "DEC" versus "Digital"
and whether or not we were two companies. I simply explained
the "DEC" = "D.E.C." = "Digital Equipment Corporation" = "Digital".
And then he said something like "Right. So that's what DEC means!
But I always wondered who 'Digital' was."

So all along, he knew us as, uhh, ummm, Nevermind!

You're right. EVERYONE knows us as "DEC".

| DEC is our NYSE name for Digital Equipment Corporation so calling it
| DEC stock is correct.

So we would then refer to our competitor's stock as SUNW stock, HWP
stock and MSFT stock as opposed to SUN, HP and Microsoft stock? People
rarely talk about a stock using the ticker symbol name, except in maybe
tables and stuff. I think our ticker symbol name is largely irrelevant to
our identity crisis.

I remain unconvinced, and .38/.39 and .42 say it for me. I'll add that
although you state that the DEC/Digital discussion is "real[sic] old",
the fact that it still rages says it all. One only has to look in the
press to see that, to most of the world, we're still DEC. In fact, I

consistently calls us DEC: with the notable exception of a half-page

A couple of points of clarification based on the last few replies:

    re: .38

I do not agree that management made a mistake, nor that they will not
admit mistakes. Their decision was based on valid external data. Errors
have been made in the implementation of the name change, but I do not
see any real data that says the decision was a mistake.

    re: .39

The name of the company has always been Digital Equipment Corporation.
The surveys mention in .36 were done PRIOR to any attempt to change our
DEC-prefixed product naming or our street name of DEC. At that time
there was confusion over who we were and it was NOT caused by any
    rebranding efforts.

The survey did not have a predetermined answer, so there was no attempt
to make the answer come out Digital. If the answer had come out DEC
that would have been the input to senior management. The survey data
said that Digital was a better name than DEC.

The senior management referenced in .36 is Bob Palmer and his staff,
most of whom are still here, and based on the funding they have devoted
to the advertising of the Digital brand, they still believe this is
    the correct decision.

    re: 42

As an earlier reply mentioned, there are many customers who refer to us
as Digital. I believe the phasing out of the use of DEC by Digital --
through product name changes and all other forms of communication --
will increase the number of customers and publications who know us as
Digital. In addition, publications are reminded not to use DEC on a
regular basis. Obviously as long as most of the Digital employees call
the company DEC, and dozens of products are DECmuble, customers will
call us DEC most of the time.

It takes time and advertising to change perceptions.

GREAT EXAMPLE! Exactly the reason we should NOT be called Digital.
It's generic, it's unidentifiable, it's misused... already! All we are

    Nearly EVERYBODY's computers are digital!

I once worked for Burroughs Corporation (aka Unisys). I was installing
a new mainframe in San Antonio, when a customer came up and said "Oh,

Point is, IBM is (was) everyone's association with computers. If it

Is it your contention that if Digital employees stopped using the word "DEC"
that customers would then cease to use the word "DEC"?

With all respect, that is totally false.

I work in the field, and I see customers literally every day. I work with
Sales people, Sales Support people, MCS people (aka Field Service), Admin
people, etc, all of whom see customers literally every day.

99+% of those people are zealous about using the word Digital, and avoiding
the word DEC. We understand that we are the front line troops of this
company, and if we don't get it right, then no one will.

And in 99+% of the time, our customers hear us say Digital, and say DEC
right back to us. Do we correct them? No, because we are not interested
in angering the people who are giving us multi-million dollar/pound/yen/xxx
orders. But I can tell you from personal, repeated, and constant experience,
that no customer that I know of speaks of us as Digital, and everytime I
read about us in any periodical it is always DEC.

Bottom line is, the vote is:

Digital: 65,000 (ie, all Digital employees)
DEC: 15,000,000 (ie, all Digital customers)

I think Federal Express - as has been pointed out - did it right. Let's
acknowledge the two camps (DEC and Digital) and combine them. Let's
ask the new advertising agency we're paying the big bucks to come up

I really can't understand why our branding campaign doesn't try
to leverage off both names. The problem has been stated that
many people don't associate the two names to the same company.
Clearly since _both_ names have advantages the most natural (and
most obvious) course of action is to set out a branding
    campaign associating the two names.

I personally haven't got a clue why we haven't been putting out

Not to necessarily add fuel to the fire, but I have to agree that
Digital is way too generic. I can say that I now consistently
use it, and am now getting more acknowledgement from our customers.
However, wether I work for Professional Software Services,
Digital Consulting, or Systems Integration is another story.

Just to take another example from the market place, the company that
used to be known as American Telephone & Telegraph is now just AT&T!

It is obvious that any company must create and maintain a strong, unique
corporate identity to compete in today's marketplace. It should be
apparent that Digital has not been as sucessful in that past as they
should have been. At least there is acknowledgement that it now should
    occur.

Given the attempt to generate a sucessful identity. It is equally
important to be prepared to constantly update, enhance, or change that
identity to reflect changes in both the world marketplace and with

Based on the number of replies to my note, I may not be able keep up with
this but I do appreciate your input. Here's a response to some of the
questions asked or issues raised:

   a. I agree that most of the world calls us DEC.

   b. I agree that life would be simpler if the decision to solve the
confusion problem (of DEC vs Digital) had come down on the DEC side.

   c. I agree that we did not make a big splash about "DEC is now Digital" as
Federal Express did when it became FedEX. I think we should have, and
will raise the possibility of doing something now.

The one thing I think is being overlooked in this conversation is that the
word DEC had _negative_ connotations when compared to Digital. I was not
in this group when the customer/non-customer feedback was collected and so
I can not give any quotes, but Digital was thought of as a bigger company
than DEC, a more global company than DEC, a more impressive company than
   DEC.

Given that data, the company had several options:
   - select the identities that has the better connotation and attempt
to expand the number of people who know it with that name, or
   - select the identity with the negative connotation and attempt to change
     those connotations, or
   - use both identities but differentiate them in some way.
In our case, senior management elected to take Digital and expand it's
awareness because it had better connotations.

Remember, I wasn't in this role when all of this happened, so I am simply
sharing with you what I have read, heard, or seen of the process that got
   us to this point.

The plan now is to advertise the Digital name and messages, get rid of the
DEC-prefixed products, usage, etc. and gradually expand the number of
people who think of us as Digital or -- as several of you have suggested
-- at least know that DEC is Digital :-)

   Specific responses:

.48 posting results of the surveys:

I chose the wrong word when I said survey. The data was from customer
focus groups or one-on-one interviews. I was not here at the time, but
I will check on what the exact format was. The typical approach is to
show the two names without any preamble and ask for reactions, then
give some additional background and ask for reaction, and then to tell
them we're trying to decide between the two and ask for reaction. The
goal in this type of testing is to determine what customer/potential
customers think unaided, and then find out what would happen if there
       was copy or explanatory text.

NOTE: I do NOT know if that was the methodology used here but I will
   	     check and let you know.

   .49 FedEX comparison:

Yes it is a similar issue but I have no idea whether their customers
are confused by Federal Express and Fed Ex, nor whether there is any
       negative connotation to FedEX.

I'd guess that FedEx did a similar study and found that there were no
significant negative connotations to changing their name.

.55 how many customers do I talk to:

I do not routinely talk with customers, in this job. I have sat thru
countless focus groups and listened to how customers refer to us --
and yes it is primarily as DEC. In previous jobs I worked with
       customers regularly.

I do appreciate your input because you do work with customers all the
       time.

.60 on employees' use of DEC vs Digital:

I did not mean to imply that the problem is _caused_ by employees
using DEC, and I appreciate learning that the so many people who deal
with customers are using Digital. That is not universally true, as
yet. In addition, some of the Digital organizations have created new
DEC-based phone numbers, programs, or as someone mentioned earlier,
voice mail systems. While getting our own house in order will not, by
itself, change the habits of customers or potential customers, it will
       help.

.65 why not both DEC & Digital:

It is one of the possible ways of dealing with confusion over two
names. The downside is that you can not build the same level of
brand equity if there are two names, two logos, two identities -- plus
building the association between the two names takes time and money.
The upside is that you're not trying to change the behavior of
customers or potential customers, and, with luck, your ads are
understood by both camps (DEC and Digital).

The idea of a DEC is Digital theme may have been discussed in the
past, but needs to be re-addressed.

This is a subjective reaction on my part, but statements like this just
SCREAM "biased questioning" or some sort of statistically invalid response.
Can someone suggest a phrasing of a question that would lead to a response
like this that is not leading or self-suggesting?

The only alternative to that hypothesis that makes sense to me is that
the strength of the word "Digital" as a name derives exactly from its
generic nature.
This argues that the name "Digital" will make us well-thought-of,
but CANNOT make us distinct in the marketplace.

Had this company been founded in 1957 as "Electronic Equipment Company"
or "Automatic Equipment Company," would there be any expectation that
the company could gain unique market recognition with the street name
"Electronic" or "Automatic?"
I think not, though that too is a subjective observation.
Furthermore, I believe that the name "Digital" is an even WORSE choice than
these, because the word "digital" is still experiencing its ascendancy
in so many areas that any attempt to monopolize it (which is the goal of
branding) will be continually subverted by every one of its other new contexts.

The |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| logo is a wonderful asset, visually arresting
and distinct in its context, but the WORD digital doesn't and can't
carry the same distinction.

Van, there must be ongoing analysis of the branding campaign's effectiveness.
Does it bear out any of the problems reported in this stream?

  PC NAMING
  >>>>>>>>>

Last fall, in an effort to build better brand awareness, Digital
started changing the names of our personal computers. The strategy
is to move away from DEC and emphasize the usage of the Digital
name. For example: Digital Celebris, Digital Venturis, etc. That
naming strategy was completed early this year with the release of
the last product in the line to be renamed -- Digital Celebris XL.

The term DECpc should no longer be used in any communications. For
help purposes, please use Digital PC or Digital PCs.

It is important that we all strive for a consistent branding effort. It
will only help to strengthen the name of Digital in the marketplace. If
you have any questions about this naming convention, please contact
  Christine Blood @AKO.

I think that keeping the name PC is important, even if it isn't as
accurate as it might be. The computing world at large is in love
with PCs, so if we want to sell that's what it should be called (IMO
at least...)

Talking of which, there's still something amiss somewhere. We don't
seem to have won the hearts of the computer press with the Alpha (at
least in Britain anyway), I rarely see a mention of it in computer
magazines over here, even when the article is quite pertinent to
Alpha systems. For example, in this month's PCW, there was a couple
of articles on why NT will be so great because it will break the mould
of the Intel architecture, but no mention of the Alpha chip as far as
I could see (maybe I need to go and read it again...) Plenty of
comments about the PowerPC though... :(

These two replies appear to assume that the results from the customer
focus groups could not possibly be valid (because they do not match
    personal experience)

and therefore the people requesting the research must have done
something wrong i.e.: used leading questions or focused only on the
                          greater Maynard area.

    Why the presumption of wrong-doing?

I can fully understand the arguement that your daily experience with
customers do not bear out the results, but why assume that other
Digital employees are being dishonest or mioptic?

I've noticed a lot more bashing of other employees of late -- some
directed at the Branding group some at other groups and I wondered why.

BTW: The customer focus groups were not done in the GMA, nor were they
done with a bias or biased questioning. They were done by a
research firm that is completely independent to determine customer
reactions to two possible names. I am still searching for the

No offense was intended.
However, though my experience in customer surveys is limited, I am aware that
the tenor of the questions and the expectations of the questioner
are significant elements in collecting and evaluating information.
Of course I expect that a professional interviewer, whether an employee
or a contractor, would be aware of this, but the questions don't always come
from professionals, and the results are distilled, not reported one-for-one.

I would consider it a leading question, for example, to ask
"Which name, DEC or Digital, do you find connotes a more powerful,
competent, international, or stable company?"
On the other hand, if the question was one of more free association,
such as "Give me some words that describe the thoughts you would have
about two companies named DEC and Digital," I could have more credence
in the results.
But even at that, did anyone ask the customers (and others in the industry),
"Which company name do you find more distinctive, identifiable, and
recognizable, DEC or Digital?"
THAT'S the question a branding campaign needs to ask first.

Coca Cola has been shown to have the most recognizable corporate logo
in the WORLD. Coca Cola NEVER wanted to be called "Coke," and they fought
long and hard to get the world to call them by the full name.
They eventually acceded to reality, and prominently display the Coke
and Coca Cola logs on every beverage container and in lots of advertising.

Couple the |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| logo and the word DEC (perhaps with a new
DEC logo and certainly including DEC in product names) and the synergy
will carry the name Digital as the master brand.

When you find the data, it would be interesting, and perhaps helpful, to know
what the "negative" connotations were around "DEC". Perhaps our actions over
the last few years have changed some of them.

Did we consider other names, like "VAX", "PDP", and "Alpha"? At various
times, I've heard people express surprise that these products were made by

Van:

It seems to me that the trouble with the focus group data is
that NOT EVEN ONE OF US has cited anecdotal evidence that
agrees with conclusions reached by the people that evaluated
  the focus groups.

  We could understand if there were some difference of opinion;
...if the anecdotal evidence were spread across the spectrum.
But it isn't. The anecdotal evidence all seems to suggest that
we ought to market under both names in a well-coordinated fashion.

It's unfortunate if some of us sound strident, but it's very
difficult to understand how the evaluators of the focus groups

Van, you missed a very important point here -- Federal Express modified

Digital Equipment Corporation, by attempting to change from what its

It hasn't hurt General Tire, General Moters, General Mills, Allied Industries,
Analog Devices, Federal Express, Blockbuster Video, American Airlines, United

Which brings up the question:

Why can't we use the first TWO names of the company? Most if not all of the
companies above are more commonly known by a two-word name; how about us? Then
the ambiguity between "Digital Computers" and "Digital Equipment Computers"
will be gone.

Your example isn't strictly valid, because:

o In several cases, "context" sneaks in to provide the
      missing information.

        - "I'm flying on American."
        - "I'm flying on United."
        - "I'm going down to Blockbuster to rent a movie"

This doesn't work as well in our case because there are
many different companies in our market segment whose
      names begin with "Digital".

o In other cases, your companies commonly are referred to by
      other names:

        - GM or GMC
        - FedEx

o In other cases, it's a trademark held by the company that
we all recognize, not the company name itself.

        - General Mills? Oh, they make "Wheaties", "Cheerios",
          and "Lucky Charms"!

        - General Motors? They make "Chevrolet", "Oldsmobile",
          "Pontiac", "Cadillac", "Buick", and "'vettes"!
(Who is it again that makes "Saturn"? :-) )

"Digital Equipment" WOULD be an improvement; I often use it myself
as a compromise between the desired "DEC" and the mandated "Digital".
But now we're up to *SIX* hard-to-ennunciate syllables!

ran a graphics arts business using PCs. She asked where I worked and I said
"Digital Equipment Corporation". She looked puzzled and asked if we were a
software house (since I said I was a software engineer). I replied that we
made PCs and larger computers, and offered systems and services and were a
$14-billion corporation. She said "Digital Corp.?", still looked puzzled,
turned to her husband and asked "Have you ever heard of Digital Equipment
Corporation"? He replied, "Sure, DEC." She could reel off the names of
many top makers of PCs, but didn't even know we were in the business. Sigh.

Several people have suggested the solution to the DEC vs. Digital
identity crisis is to use both. I think this is an excellent suggestion.
I have an HP book on my shelf.... oh wait, the HP salesman just burst into
my office and informed me that their company is no longer known as HP, but
as Hewlett Packard [NOT!]. :-)

Anyway as I glance upon my shelf, I see:

      ------
      | | HEWLETT
      |	hp | PACKARD
      ------

(Sorry, you have to use your imagination somewhat since I am character
cell impaired)

So why don't we do the same sort of thing like:

      ______ _____________________________
      | | | | | | | | | |
      | DEC | | d | i | g | i | t | a | l |
      | | | | | | | | | |
      ------ -----------------------------
	      Equipment Corporation

I am sure that someone wise in the way of graphic art could come up with
something really nice along these lines. Maybe we could even have a Company
wide competition. The point that I am trying to make with my example is
that it has all of the important elements:

	1) Retention of the familiar block Digital logo (blue or burgundy,
	   you choose).

	2) Incorporation of the common customer usage, DEC. This also
would preserve our tradition product lines of DECxxxx. Now
anything that is a DECxxxx is by definition obsolete.

	3) The full Company name is included, so that there is no confusion
	   concerning the DEC acronym.

	4) Digital will not be confused with Digital Technologies, Digital
Devices, and all of the other Digital xxxxxx companies.

	5) Everyone will know that DEC is (emphasis)Digital
	   (less emphasis)Equipment Corporation.

Commence firing....

Re: .98

To me, it seems like too many elements. But still we're making progress, I
think.

Here's what I get as the basic truths. We have two very valuable (recognized
and powerful) symbols:

			     DEC
and
		_____________________________
		| | | | | | | |
		| d | i | g | i | t | a | l |
		| | | | | | | |
		-----------------------------

The first, DEC, is already established with the legions who know and love (we
hope) us. We probably do not have the power, nor does it seem wise, to try to
erase it from the mindset of those who know it. Trying seems counterproductive,
especially with what must be admitted is a generic replacement.

The second is a great asset, a unique, creative work of art, very recognizable,
and totally appropriate to our business. Nobody suggests giving it up (did
they?).

FWIW, I too believe that the market research on DEC/Digital can be safely
ignored. As it's been pointed out in this thread, you get the results you want.
Look at the Republican vs. Democratic pollsters' results. Was this research
done under double blind conditions? We must lend more credence to the
experience of those in the field, and we all personally know the difficulty in
getting some nonblank reaction when we tell someone the name of the company we
work for when we use the long name.

At one time it was considered or at least rumored that we were considering
changing the name of the Company to DEC. Could it be that from inside the
Company the sound of "DEC" (as opposed to D.E.C., and unlike I.B.M., A.T.&T.,
etc.) is just too informal and not serious enough for important and dynamic
folks like ourselves? Do we hear it with different ears from inside the
Company?

Now the hard part we've all been grappling with. What do to. I don't know. If
we can't change the Company name to simply "DEC", how about changing it to
"DEC Equipment Corporation" or "DEC Corporation"? Silly? Maybe. We then still
have the name DEC, and we still have a longer name, which perhaps we want
because "DEC" alone, to the ear, doesn't feel like "name enough" to satisy.

But then what does |d|i|g|i|t|a|l| mean? It's well documented in this thread,
largely by Atlant, why the word "digital" is hopeless to use as, or in, our
name. His arguments appear incontrovertible.

But as a logo, a symbol, it's still just as usable and seems not to lose any
validity just because we no longer have the word "digital" in our name.

Up until a few years ago, here in Dallas, if you said you worked for 'Digital',
people immediately knew you must work for 'Digital Switch Corporation'. Now
if you say you work for 'Digital', people say, "Who????". It seems that a
few years ago, Digital Switch Corporation decided to call themselves what
everyone outside of Dallas called them, 'DSC'. They changed their name to
'DSC Communications'.

As usual, we seem to be swimming upstream:-(

That list comes from the Q4 1994 "ProPhone" CD-ROM set, five
discs full of the "all" the residential and business phone
listings (except (800)) for the United States.

I compressed out all the "Digital Equipment Corp" listings
(including the obvious variants and typos) and also the
"Digital Servicenter" listings. (Are those us too? I left
a bunch of "Digital Servi Center" listings; I wonder if
  they're the same organization?)

Sorry to use a bludegon, but I think the point needs to be made.

If everybody calls us 'DEC' and knows us by 'DEC' ("Hey!, get the DEC
guy in here to fix that widget, will ya?") I think think we should not
only encourage it, but welcome it. IBM has a pretty nifty looking 3
letter logo, and you can't say it, you must spell it. Ours you can
'say'. Slipping the |d|e|c| logo (yes, JUST like the |d|i|g|i|t|a|l|

on TV again? Inquiring neighbors want to know. ("Did you guys fold or

I went into Brussels for the first time in ages, and went into a new

older brother whom I hadn't seen for about 8 years. Last I knew he was
a salesman at a PC software box-shifter. We chatted about his work, and

> Airlines, etc.

For this analogy to work, the above names would need to be something
    like:

Radial Tire - they make tires and most of them are radials
Internal Combustion Motors - they make motors, and they're all
    				 internal combustion
Food Mills - they run mills, and they all make food.
Passenger Airlines - they fly planes, and they all take passengers
Movie Video - they rent videos, and most of them are movies
Digital Equipment - they make equipment, and most of it is digital

At least Digital Computers would tell people we make computers.

How about if we kept DEC but changed our name to Digital Edge Computers
or something like that. Then used both DEC and Digital... in our logo
    as has been suggested.

A name change campaign could bring visibility, right? Like, how many
people know that Boston Chicken changed it's name?

I know, but think their new name "Boston Market" sounds too much like one of
those 24-hour convenience stores. They would have done better sticking by
their traditional "Boston Chicken" name.

I don't have my copy of "The Ultimate Entrepreneur" handy but I
remember reading in there that the word "computer" was a no-no when
Digital Equipment Corp. was originally named. I think it had
something to do with getting venture capital.

   Anyone remember the details?
3904.114ATLANT::SCHMIDTE&RT -- Embedded and RealTime EngineeringWed Jun 07 1995 16:3825
Charlie:

Right! Ken couldn't get venture capital to build a commercial
computer, even though he'd already built several at MIT /
  Lincoln Labs.

  There were two problems:

o The computer market was thought to be very limited.
These were the days when people still said things like
"three computers will suffice for all of mankind".

o Whatever market there was, the big boys (IBM and Univac)
      already had it sewn up.

So we started by building "system modules" and "laboratory modules".
"And, oh, just by the way, we'll build this little 'Progammable
Data Processor'. Oh no, it's *CERTAINLY* not a computer! Computers
are big and expensive and need glass rooms and high priests in lab
coats and no one makes any money selling them! Oh no!"

So we built the PDP-1, not a computer.

3904.117Reality check!VAXUUM::SWATKOahead of the Dilbert curveWed Jun 07 1995 22:3429
If I read this thread right, this *entire* re-branding decision is riding on
the results of a currently unknown survey, of unknown customers, with
unknown questions and methods, performed by a company who has no stake in
the outcome? Furthermore, our *and* Van's personal experience is "that most
of the world calls us DEC." Supposedly this surveying was done
scientific-like -- isn't it enough cause to re-question something when
reality doesn't match the prediction of the survey?

Forget about what sounds smoother and 'possibly-negative connotations',
...[Does the motto "Hell has our number" conjure pleasant images?]...
branding is for one thing -- AN IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE IDENTITY (period.)

"Digital" is a very common adjective as shown in 3904.103. (Note that
3904.103 shows just companies where the *first* word is 'Digital'. How
about where 'Digital' falls elsewhere, like "Western Digital" and such?)
Statistically speaking, the chances of anyone recognizing the word "Digital"
to mean "Digital Equipment Corporation" is reeeal slim.

Also realize that in situations where a logo cannot be shown, like in
plain text or in person-to-person conversations, the word 'Digital' will
always be ambiguous. So much for creating an identity...

This branding campaign is yet another fiasco-in-action, much like the "all
new purplish logo that looks like the old blue logo, but with
round-instead-of-square dots."

Maybe you should try a new survey...

As long as DEC remains our stock's ticker symbol, no amount of swaying,
cajoling, ignoring, persuading, etc. is ever gonna quash the "DEC" name
by the media and therefore all who it influences. Either we accept
"DEC" and take advantage of it and promote it with |d|i|g|i|t|a|l|, or
change the friggin' name of this company. I could go either way, as
long as we chose one way and did it right so we have as strong a
corporate name/identity as any other Fortune 100 company. I'm tired of
the usual lack of recognition, questions, quizical looks, etc. in
public about the name of my employer, particularly beyond the N.E.
area. (almost said 3M area as we're wont to do 'around these parts, but
visually it much more strongly connoted a certain other Fortune 100
    company... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...).

Somewhere back there I saw |d|i|g|i|t|a|l|
    				    |e|quipment
    		                    |c|orporation

and thought it had some merit. Digital IS DEC and the sooner we
embrace that or remove the continued impetus for it (ie: the full name
and ticker symbol) the better off we'll be. BTW, try saying "D-E-C"
like IBM or HP. Geez, it's even worse!

Last weekend I was playing golf with two fellow Digits. We were
grouped with two older gentlmen, and on the third tee one guy says,
"You guys work together?" "Yes, at Digital Equipment."

"Ohhhhhhhh, mmmmmmmmmm," was the response, like something bad had just
happened. My heart sank. I just wanted to play golf, not have to deal
with yet more questions about why......

Two holes later, the guy asks me if I know so and so in sales. Never
heard of him, I said, and I've been there for 11 years. "Are you sure
you mean Digital Equipment Corp.," I ask? Yes, he says, this guys

"Ohhhhhhhhhhh," he says. "I thought you worked at Digital Systems."

to her company. She said it was for 300 people and wanted to know if
I would be there. "Really," I said? "Are you sure it's Digital?
(repeat confusion above) I don't think we have that kind of money, or
that many people to even invite," I say, surprised, but hopeful.

No, no, she insists......same result: party was for Digital Systems.
Apparently they refer to themselves as Digital.

guy does windows and doors; he is not a computer person, but he knows we're
DEC.

My mother was here for a visit a couple of weeks ago and was really excited
that our company name was all over the front page of the San Jose Mercury
News. Wrong! It was a story about digital computers -- not ours -- just
the digital (not analog) kind. Again, not a computer person, but I would
have thought my own mother would know where I've worked for the last 12 yrs.
Clearly, I need to go back to calling us DEC around her.

I am around customers all day, every day, and they all call us DEC (as in
"let's get the DEC guy out here). I have no faith at all in the survey -
surveys, like statistics, are always suspect. I'm sure that a survey could
show that International has more prestige than IBM - doesn't mean that
International would be a good name for a company though.

Time for a long weekend, I think.

Yesterday we went to visit friends in the Hopkinton, MA area. On the way
we passed a building with a sign out front for a company called
Boston Digital ... I don't know what they do, but it looked hi-tech.
    No, it ain't us.

The cover story in Business Week the other week was "The Turnaround at
    DEC."

Also in a recent article, an analyst referring to us was quoted as
saying "IBM, Compaq, and Digital [Equipment]" Business Week's
editorial policy apparently requires them to always refer to us as
Digital Equipment to avoid confusion, even when a news source refers to
    us as just "Digital."

at least Microsoft is covering all bases... why can't we?

The June 26, 1995 edition of "Digital Today" includes (on page 5) a story
about the Digital Media Studios, a group in Digital attempting "to become
the industry leading provider of the critical resources required
to design, develop and release interactive applications for distribution
over multiple broadband networks."

The main article refers to the group as the Digital Media Studios
repeatedly and consistently.
A second article on the same page starts out "Digital's Digital Media Studios
has expanded its staff..."
This need for redundancy struck me as I read it, but it points out the
basic ambiguity in the name of the organization in question.
By the way, this group's parent organization is listed (in the same,
second article) as "Digital EQUIPMENT'S Video and Interactive Information
Services group" (emphasis added, initial capitalization as published).

So to protect the use of the word "digital," will product names now have
to repeat the word to account for both its proper and generic use?
Will we produce "Digital digital communications concentrators" and
"Digital digital laser printers" as we promote "Digital digital interactive
media?"

It appears that nobody has asked DECUS yet to change name to
DIGITALUS (DigitalUS ?).

I wonder what their reaction would be ... (:-)

The "DEC" in DECUS is not for Digital Equipment Corporation, it is for Digital
Equipment Computer (Users Society).

Well, if memory serves, they tried that for awhile but found themselves
paralyzed. (Dey found de only curare to change da name back.)

No seriously folks, given Tom's etymology it seems we have absolutely
no recourse but to insist that they rename themselves

    Digital Equipment CorporationUS

but then, to assuage the large non-United States contingent amongst the
membership, they would perforce thus RE-Re-rename themselves to

    Digital Equipment Computer Users Society.

  They'd probably have heart failure.

Since DECUS has no official connection with Digital Equipment
Corporation, they are under no obligation to change their name.
3904.143Shorten it to DCUS instead :-)RTFM1::OSTMANSoon, no more Mr NICE guy :-)Wed Sep 13 1995 15:217

Are you saying that some say "DEC-US"? Most people I've talked to seems
to say "DE-CUS" But maybe they could shorten it to DCUS just to make sure
no-one by misstake say DEC-US. It should sound pretty much like it does
    today anyway... :-)

Digital own the DECUS name and logo and license them to DECUS. Also, in the UK
at least, Digital employees carry out the administration and financial
management of DECUS. I'd say that was an official connection.

3904.146But why is the NBR logo so bad?TROOA::BROWNRPC - Really Practical ComputingWed Nov 08 1995 03:5612
After scanning most of the replies since .4, the original topic seems to
have been forgotten. Why does .4 say the crummy vibrating grey logo is
an exception? Other NBR sponsers put a brief product blurb in with their
correct logos. God (and few digits - and they're less sure everyday)
knows what digital really does from this extremely poor 10 second, black
and white (made by a monochrome Rainbow graphics package?) spot at the
beginning and end of NBR every night? We've got a Video Content service
in Tarrytown, er Ottawa, let's have them do something really creative!

Also anyone know what NBR sponsorship costs?

3904.147It was different last night...WKOL09::STETSONThink Digital Software!Thu Nov 09 1995 16:0712
I noticed last night that the wavy greyscale logo, and the corresponding
message, were, at least for last night, replaced by a branding concious logo
and a new message.

Big improvement IMHO!

THANKS!!

Rick

PS: I don't have a clue what this sponsorship costs, but it does target the
'right' (again, MHO) audience.
