3749.0. "Alpha/RSTS Emulator" by JULIET::LEZAMA_RO () Mon Mar 20 1995 23:17

    Can someone please point me in the right direction.

    I have a customer with a VAX11/785. They would like to upgrade to an
    Alpha system but have a RSTS emulator on the system and do not want to
    look at replacing the applications that use the RSTS emulator now. I
    have been told that the VAX 11/785 is the last system to be able to use
    the RSTS emulator, so moving to a VAX will not solve the problem.

    Is there an Alpha note where this is more applicable? Or, is there an
    Alpha wizzard out there who can help. We used to have one but in our
    infinite wisdom, we laid him off.

    Thanks

    No help, but I suspect the've gotten their money's worth out of the
    hardware and software by now. What was that RSTS emulator called?
    Last time I used it, it made a 780 run like an 11/34.

Get in touch with Anton Chernoff, who can probably point you to the right
person to talk about the PDP-11 emulator on Alpha. I believe there are
customers using it already.

Please drop me some mail to let me know what you find.

3749.4KLAP::porterthe mantra of the walls and wiringTue Mar 21 1995 12:055
The way it was explained to me, it's a PDP-11 emulator,
not an RSX emulator. I don't know whether it means
you can take any existing -11 O/S and boot it up,
but I'd hope so.

3749.5See Note 1066 in PROXY::PDP_11ATLANT::SCHMIDTE&RT -- Embedded and RealTime EngineeringTue Mar 21 1995 12:4617
  The emulator on the '785 was probably "Ross-V", sold by Ross
  Systems, I think. I haven't heard of it for years, although I
  think the company is still around doing much different stuff.

  Regarding our emulators: There are several. The one you should
  pursue is code-named "Viking". Dave Porter is correct: It is
  a PDP-11 processor-and-I/O emulator and could theoretically
  host any operating system including RSTS/E. (I think RSTS/E
  was definitely on the list of desireable targets.) I think
  Tom Rarich (MROA::RARICH) is a good contact, but the Viking
  project is certainly described in note 1066 in PROXY::PDP_11.

  If you don't already have this conference in your notebook and
  would like to add it, press <KP7> or <Select> or type "SELECT"
  and the conference will be added to your notebook.

3749.6There is a PDP emulator product, soon.HELIX::ESPERTITue Mar 21 1995 13:3719

      There is a product that is currently in development that will soon be
      available, Viking PDP-11 emulator. Since this is purely a hardware
      emulator (covering most of the PDP-11 hardware family), it should
      support all Digital PDP operating systems.

      Currently, we have a beta version that boots up RSX11-M and RSX11-M Plus.
      Also, it boots up RT11 and successful compiliations have been performed
      in both of these O/S families. RSTS is also targetted to be supported.

      This emulator runs on a low cost Alpha platform, computer, Alpha AXPpci 33.
      WindowsNT is the O/S platform which the emulator runs on.

      There will be a field test in May for the first half of the development.

      You may want to contact Sue Thorstensen with product questions.

3749.7Not Yet AnnouncedHELIX::THORSTENSENTue Mar 21 1995 17:0811
    The Viking PDP-11 emulator is under development, but the design is
    still being worked. We have not yet announced it as a product and
    will not do so until it is much further along; we're not selling yet.

    The current marketing plan calls for the emulator to be sold through
    system integrators and distributors. The emulator will need
    modification for most customer installations and it is our intent that
    consultation and custom work be done by the system integrators.

    Feel free to send me mail if you have specific questions, but please
    do not talk to customers about this product.
3749.8And ported to OSF/1 as well...MSCDEV::BOERSThe Moscow software centerWed Mar 22 1995 10:5410
    We, the Digital Moscow Software center, have ported VIKING to run under
    OSF/1 on request of TOEM Europe. Porting was easy, took only a few
    weeks. It runs roughly 50% faster than under OpenVMS on the same
    hardware.

    I don't know what the marketing plans here are.

    Nice to see RSX-11 running again after all these years.

    They have BASIC+ and BP2 emulators for Unix systems. I recently went
    to training regarding their VMS-to-Unix migration tools (impressive;
    system services, RMS, RTLs, job control, much of DCL all running under
    Unix -- Digital SI is planning a service offering in this arena).

    You can get information on the BASIC+/BP2 stuff from Jon Power,

    Our competition has been using Sector 7 to move people off our

  I don't remember if it was Tops-10 or TOPS-20, but one or both
  has been done. Juts a month or two ago, the toopic came up again
  in one of the notes conferences I read and a pointer was posted.

3749.21There are several!ATLANT::SCHMIDTE&amp;RT -- Embedded and RealTime EngineeringThu Mar 23 1995 18:4214
  There are several PDP-8 emulators.

  There's the one that runs in the PDP-11/60 Writable Control
  Store, but I don't imagine you have one of those (an '11/60)
  laying around. For years, the WPS-8 groupo used this as their
  development engine as it was the fastest "PDP-8" available.

  Then there's Bob Supnick's c-code PDP-8 emulator.  It's documented
  in the PROXY::PDP_11 (!!!) notesfile. If you don't already have this
  conference in your notebook and would like to add it, press <KP7> or
  <Select> or type "SELECT" and the conference will be added to your
  notebook.

Well, then all you have to do is to implement a
fully-featured PDP11/60 emulator, and you'd be
able to run your PDP-8.

re: KL10 emulator

A third-party does have a KL10 emulator that runs under
OSF/1, I mean Digital UNIX. It supports extended addressing and
runs TOPS-10 V7.04 and TOPS-20 V7.0 O/S's "right out of the box".
Device support includes NIA20 (ethernet), RH20/RP06/RP07 disks,
and TM03/TU45/TU77 tapes. This third-party is currently working
out licensing issues with Digital in order to market the emulator.
There are some current KL10 customers who are eagerly waiting for
this to happen.
