3740.0. "NET RIDER TOOL ?" by BSS::R_SCHMITT () Tue Mar 14 1995 17:34

    Hi,

Does anyone have information on a tool called NET RIDER. This tool
is used to take control of a PC through the network and you can see
all the same windows the the local PC user sees. I was told that
this tool is written by Digital. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that it contains this functionality? My impression is that
it's a product to allow dial-in access from a PC into a terminal server
(much like Microsoft Remote Access Services).

I know that Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) has functions for
taking remote control over a PC like you describe it. It also have functions
for software distribution/installation and hardware/software inventory.
With POLYCENTER AssetWORKS (extensions to MS SMS from Digital), you can
even include UNIX and OpenVMS as clients to the SMS server (which runs
on Windows NT).

HIGHLIGHTS

o Allows remote users' systems to connect to network resources, using
   dial-in technology

o Complete hardware and software solution that supports AppleTalk, IPX, and
   IP users

o Provides a variety of access methods from Digital

o Includes Mosaic from Digital, a navigation tool that opens the door to
   the Internet

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Digital NetRider Remote Access System is a complete client/server
packaged solution that combines an 8 or 32 port (32 ports available within
the next 6 months) remote access server with the client software for TCP/IP,
IPX, and AppleTalk systems. The Digital NetRider system draws upon DECserver
technology for its high performance, multi-protocol access server and
incorporates industry-leading remote access client software to be installed
on the individual remote client systems. It includes Remote Office software
by Stampede for TCP/IP and IPX clients, and software for AppleTalk and
MacTCP/IP connections based on client software from FCR. As a DEChub module,
it provides seamless network access and convergence via the hub.

In addition to providing heterogeneous client connection facilities, the
Digital NetRider system also offers other features. Remote control is
offered for IPX users who wish to control another PC remotely -- either to
search a large database on the network or to do remote system diagnosis.
Users can try browsing the Internet with Mosaic from Digital, which is also
included. A TCP/IP stack is provided for the remote user who does not
already have one, as are server modem cables. Server-based licensing is
provided for remote node clients and remote control master systems.

The operating system is DECserver Network Access Software V1.5 V1.5, which
provides the Digital NetRider system with the following:

o IP support over SLIP and CSLIP
o IP, IPX, and AppleTalk support over point-to-point protocol (PPP)
o Password security
o Kerberos authentication
o CHAP and PAP security via server login
o PAP security via Kerberos
o Remote management via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP),
   HUBwatch, and Terminal Server Manager
o Accounting mechanisms that provide event logging of significant user
actions (e.g., logins, session connects, and password failures).

BENEFITS

o Maximizes investment -- Client software for TCP/IP, IPX, and AppleTalk
connections provides support for different connection requirements.

o No need to learn anything new -- Remote node connection facilities enable
users to interact with the network as peer members, just as if they were
directly connected via an Ethernet controller.

o Faster access to data -- Remote control for IPX clients enables users to
do searches of large databases without having to send the entire database
   over to the remote user.

o Multitasking -- Provides the ability to handle multiple session types
(IP, IPX, AppleTalk) over a single connection through the use of
   industry-standard point-to-point protocol (PPP).

o Provides seamless network access -- Plugs into Digital's DEChub
backplanes and interacts with other DEChub products, including the
   HUBwatch management system.

o Manageable -- Offers Simple Network Management Protocol, HUBwatch, and
   Terminal Server Manager.

o Ease of management -- Kerberos point-to-point PAP authentication provides
management ease for the network administrator. Also provided is centrally
   located password administration.

o Strong security -- Point-to-point CHAP authentication drastically reduces
the possibility of network eavesdroppers to steal passwords.

o Cost effective -- Server-based licensing means no need to pay for access
   on a per client basis.

o Ease of ordering -- NetWare loadable modules and TCP/IP files required
for application are included, providing a total software solution.

o Ease of administration -- PC-based graphical user interface utility for
server configuration and PC boot loader eliminate the need for an
   additional console terminal.

o Maximizes user investment -- Terminal access and emulation and TN3270
support are provided, allowing connectivity to the network via LAT and
   Telnet.

o Existing equipment can be utilized -- Software-only upgrade kits are
available. Any DECserver that supports DECserver Network Access Software
V1.5 can become a Digital NetRider Remote Access Server through the
   purchase of a software kit.

o Increased server performance -- Host multiplexing solution acts as a
proxy agent for PC clients. This causes less of a load on the network by
   minimizing routing traffic.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

The Digital NetRider system comes into the market at a point in time when
early adopters have already tested the majority of available remote access
products. They are now ready to implement remote access on a broad scale,
sending their sales representatives out into the field and tying in other
remotely located users back into the office. It is a huge market and a great
opportunity for selling Digital's networking products.

The competition in the remote access server market has changed considerably
in the last year, with newer players taking market share away from vendors
who have already established themselves in this area. Today's top
competitors include Shiva, 3COM, and Telebit. There are many others,
including Xylogics, MicroCom, and DCA.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The Digital NetRider 90 system uses a DECserver 90M as its access server
component. This means that it takes advantage of the DECserver 90M ability
to support 57.6 Kilobits per second per port and 4 Mbytes of memory. It is a
hub-based module that can fit into either the DEChub 90 or the DEChub 900
Multiswitch backplane, or it can be used standalone. A Digital NetRider 900
system will incorporate the DECserver 900 module, and provides per port
speeds of up to 115.2 Kilobits per second.

The Digital NetRider system is Digital's premier remote access solution.
While a derivative of the DECserver family, the Digital NetRider system
differs in that it is a fully integrated package, composed of the server and
operating software plus client and application software, a PC boot loader
kit, online documentation, and an easy-to-use "Getting Started" installation
guide. It is designed for plug-and-play use. Also, Digital NetRider systems
can be paired with the DECbrouter 90 to provide LAN to LAN access.

CHANNELS

The Digital NetRider was built specifically so that distributors could
easily provide a single, packaged remote access solution easily. It is
anticipated that distributors, value-added resellers, and master resellers
will be the primary sales channels.

AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING

The Digital NetRider remote access packaged solution is available now in the
U.S., and will be available January 27, 1995, in Europe. The product will
not be announced until February 6, 1995. Early availability is designed for
early user orders and channels readiness.
