3648.0. "Virus Policy Advice needed" by GRANPA::CPOINDEXTER () Tue Jan 24 1995 21:48

Our local school system is having a rash of viruses throughout. The
scenario is: Four high schools with novell nets, using state supplied
packages performing whatever they do, feeder elementary and middle
schools for each of the four high schools, teachers who use pee cees at
school for grade keeping, etc., and also taking floppies home for
updates/homework/etc., etc... If you're starting to get the picture,
    it's a virus heaven/haven/hell. A virus that we're seeing is "Monkee
something-or-other" as identified by MacAfee(sp?). There have been
others, or the various checkers are randomly mis-identifying them.
I accept the reality that this is something that will reoccur, and
there must be a continuous effort to fight this plague. There is an
open door at this time, for this to happen. Because of the nature of
school systems, I cannot yet envision a security policy.
What I must envision(I am a member of the school board), with in a
matter of hours, is an addition to our school policies covering the
school systems, in the already occurring event of the spreading of
viruses to employees personal systems or from personal systems. I
personally understand "the nature of the beast" and have no problem
explaining this phenomenon to technical people, but this must be
addressed in some manner for our non-technical staff. Perhaps it could
be as simple as "so sue me" or "any of you guys putting viruses on our
machines will have your fingernails pulled out", but I'm looking for
some "boiler plate" stuff that can be presented to our lawyers pretty
quick, before we get the teacher's lawyer husbands involved.
Can anyone give me direction for some "boiler plate" here?
