3640.0. ""Process (shop floor) control" manager for interview" by QUARK::LIONEL (Free advice is worth every cent) Mon Jan 16 1995 20:14

I was approached by the editor of "Control Magazine", which apparently
caters to the process control industry, for an interview about Digital products
(and the OpenVMS operating system) for use in manufacturing floor applications.
(I think he asked me because I've begun popping up in the CompuServe VAX Forum.)

I know that I am *NOT* the right person for him to talk to, but I've drawn
a blank at trying to figure out who might be. Any suggestions as to would
be appropriate? I'd think some sort of product manager or industry segment
manager would be reasonable.

    I believe that David Allen @MRO DTN 297-9162 is the shop floor guy who
    should field this request. At least he was the last time that I needed
    something like that. I looked Dave up in elf and this is the entry that
    made sense to me as far as location goes.

Hmmm. Don't know if this is a good pointer or not, but you might want to
talk to Judy Cross (DELNI::CROSS), the product manager of DECnet/OSI for
OpenVMS. The reason I suggest her, is I think we have a few customers that use
OSI, and our OSI product set in the manufacturing environment (I think
one of our customers does something with our stuff for Saturn, don't know
all of the details though).

 You could also try Linda Feldeisen (STOWOA::FELDEISEN), Linda is the
 product manager for the BASEstar suite of CIM products.

 Helpfully yours,

 Mark.

Thanks, I've now got lots of pointers.

3640.5One more contact....MR4DEC::DTOMPKINSTue Jan 17 1995 12:486
    David Allen is a good contact for discrete manufacturing applications.
    His counterpart for process manufacturing is Randy Levine DTN 297-6255.
    Randy is my boss; we've met with the editors and local salespeople for
    Control on more than one occasion.

I do not have a name, but another possible direction.
Get someone from manufacturing. DEC had (has) some plants that are rated
grade A at MRPII. The magazine caters more to implementors than to developers,
so a combination of users and development could attract a lot of attention.

This is a fine opportunity.

    You should contact someone from BASEstar Open. The product managers are
    Nancy Gustavesen (angst::gustavesen) and Anthony Carpenter
    (varese::carpenter).

The editor wrote back to me and said his deadline was approaching so he
couldn't use any more info, though he had heard from Randy Levine, at least.
I also heard from someone in corporate PR who will keep in touch.
