This only effect's companies who have a current maintenance contract's
and valid warranty on Digital's AXP type ALPHAS, Digital's PC and
associated product ranges ie. printer's Vdu's ect.

Through a major reshuffle within the UK's Desktop unit, Digital has
made redundant 95+ field service engineer's and replacing them with
untrained contractor's, this is a cost cutting exercise to reduce
there internal expenditure and aim for a disposable work force.

at it's worse some offices have only been left with 2 digital trained
and experienced engineer's ....as of Livingston in Scotland.

And another question how many od Digital's field engineer's are trained
on alpha product's?

if there is anyone out there in Digital reading this...a comment would
be nice.

Apparently true, effective last Friday - some notes in UK_Digital on
Friday about it, and a rumour here in the repair centre. I heard 'over
90' engineers, so 95 sounds about right. There hasn't been any official
announcement that I've heard, I wouldn't be surprised if it came as news
to customers as well. It seems to have come as news to the engineers
    affected.
I'd heard something a while back about the 'man in a van' idea, using
contractors to service desktop equipment, but I didn't realise that
this was to be in place of, rather than additional, to the existing
    desktop service engineers.

I heard from one of the engineers that the number was over 100. Another
cause for concern is that the call handling staff at Welwyn still haven't
been relocated, although the `official' closure date of that office was
at least 2 months ago (we got 3 weeks notice that the building was to be
closed; thanks guys)

Digital is also looking for contract engineers in the traditional Vax
space in London via at least two agencies that I know of.
I wonder what the customers will think of this when very experianced
    engineers are replaced with contractors.
Why is it that just when we seem to be making some headway in MCS. that
the management true to past form have this almost obsessive need to get
digital into another round of upheaval.
If only a period of stability in thoughs areas that are doing well was
allowed then employees wouldn't feel the need to leave so the business
    could be allowed to grow.
I get the feeling of here we go again right now.

because, according to Star Trek, "the needs of the few, outweigh the
needs of the many" you can figure that one out.

Apparently the 100+ engineers have been replaced with 50 poorly trained
(ie not at all) contractors. I bet the customers are delighted.

Chris.

PS I wonder how many managers went?
