3576.0. "Cable Guide available" by SUBURB::JAMESH (Left Handed People are SUPER Natural) Wed Dec 14 1994 12:36

    Due to popular demand we in Reading UK have produce a Cable Guide which
    gives details of all our more popular cables (pinouts, order number,
    where used etc).
    Previous versions of the guide have proved to be very popular and if
    you would like a copy you can copy it from:

    How big is this file? I had some 7500 blocks available in my account
    and got an error message when trying to copy, that I exceeded my
    size, and that includes an extra 1000 block buffer.

    Sorry about the size of it. What makes it so large is the photographs.
    Hopefully next week we'll start to cut it into four sections to make
    it more manageable.

3576.7 "So what cable do I need?" SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Wed Dec 14 1994 14:5416

    	You may wish to avail yourselves of a different cable guide
    rejoicing in the name of: "So what cable do I need?"

    	This one is a purely text file showing which cable is required to
    connect which (mainly external) option to which option.

    	This one is updated periodically as and when new information is
    passed to me or when corrections are (occasionally) required.

    	This one is only about 350 blocks long and takes only 4-5 minutes
    to print on a turbo PrintServer 20. It may be copied from:

    RDGE17::DISK$SCS_USER_1:[PARTENQ.DMO_CABLES]CABLE_CONFIGURATION_GUIDE.PS

3576.10 Can anyone else put it on the Internet? SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Thu Dec 15 1994 07:2411

    	Lack of resources for WWW etc.

    	Unfortunate!!!!!!!!! This is the way the company is going - and so
    are we, told last Friday!

    	If someone else has the time and resources to do this, then the
    files are available to them on the net. It is, of course, another good
    idea

    				Malcolm.
3576.11What webs we weave!GLDOA::WERNERThu Dec 15 1994 11:206
    It appears that the Cable Guide is almost as big as the Storageworks
    Warranty Guide, which is at 350,000 blocks and growing. Of course it
    could be that 200,000+ blocks of that covers cables (with appropriate
    explainations that the warranty prices are zero).

    1. be aware that printing can/will take more than 24 hours on a LPS20!

    2. All respects and thanks to the authors ! I appreciate this document
        and found it very useful for my daily work.

    3. The comments/ideas to improve quality/accessability/easy-to-use are
       good and welcome (I hope). But do not only complain and make
       proposals. If possible, try to contribute !

    I've now cut the guide into four parts as follows:

    DISK$SCS_USER_1:[PARTENQ.DMO_CABLES]CABLESV63-2.PS

    DISK$SCS_USER_1:[PARTENQ.DMO_CABLES]CABLESV63-4.PS

    I hope these are more manageable. Actual sizes are:

3576.16And now, in PDF format!HLDE01::SOMERS_DTue Dec 20 1994 11:4012
    re: .8 .10. .12. .13

    Full of festive spirit (hic), and because I don't have shares in
    Quantum, I have converted the cable guide into the
    ever-so-wonderfully-compact Adobe PDF format.

    So, surf along to:

    http://apdncc.apd.dec.com/lnx/pdf

    and pick up cableg.pdf (and acro_usa.exe - windows PDF reader - if you
    don't have it) and consume a mere 28516 blocks of disk space.
3576.17and more PDFHLDE01::SOMERS_DTue Dec 20 1994 11:448
    re -1

    In the same location, you will also find some other stuff that I turned
    into PDF, including Getting Started on the Internet (inter.pdf).

    Happy browsing,

    David.

3576.19 What advantage the 'guide being on the WWW? SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Tue Dec 20 1994 12:5413

    	Ye gods and little fishes!!!!!

    	This WWW bit is no use to anyone - for the Cable Reference Guide!!!!!
    I called up the page on WWW at 14:05 (on the right side of the pond),
    it is now 14:54 and it still hasn't come up on the screen (VS3100/76
    SPX) here in DECpark, Reading. How much longer is it going to be, I
    wonder?

    	I know it is 14 MB, but this is ridiculous! What advantage is this
    to anyone, I ask myself?

    				Malcolm.

3576.21Looks like line problems...HLDE01::VUURBOOM_RRoelof Vuurboom @ APD, DTN 829 4066Tue Dec 20 1994 13:2713
    Malcolm,

    a 256Kb line runs from here to Nijmegen and a 1024Kb line from
    Nijmegen to under your feet in Reading. "Normally", you should
    be able to download this in about 10-20 minutes.

    There appear to be some line problems at the moment so don't
    blame poor little PDF and WWW just yet. (On the other hand feel
    free to pick up the 100MB postscript version from the US anytime :-)

    	Well, two things Roelof: First of all, I sit next to the guys who
    have created the Cable Reference Guide, so I get my hard copy literally
    over the fence of my cube; Secondly, I am the one who maintains the
    Cable Configuration Guide on the same (PostScript) node as the other
    one.

    	I am going to kill the job of getting the WWW cable file over, it
    is now 2.5 hours!!!!! I was only trying it out on the Web.

    A revised Cables Guide is available from:

          RDGE17::DISK$APPL_08:[PARTENQ.DMO_CABLES]CABLEV7_NOPIC.PS

    Although this guide has no photographs, it is fairly short (3541 blocks)
    and will print on a LPS20.

    We hope to get a guide with photographs available to you sometime next
    week.
    This of course will be very large but again I'll divide it into four or
    five sections.

    As usual your comments are welcome.

    Don't forget the WWW version. Look at http://www.digital.co.uk/
