Subject: HP 540 Competitive Info
In response to many requests on ads & knockoffs.......
Ads featuring both 110 and 500 compared against the HP 540/560 are currently
running in Computer Shopper.
================================================================================
Competitive Info
DECwriter 110i HP DeskJet 540
List Price $319 List Price $365
Color Upgrade $49 Color Upgrade $49
Speed (3ppm) and resolution (300 dpi) are about equal
Where We Win:
- Lower Price
- Replaceable Ink Cartidges/You can reuse the monochrome (black) printhead for
10-12 refills ink catridges. Beacuse you do not have to replace the printhead
each time you run out of ink, you save about 35% over HP. This gives you a
low cost per page (2 cents)
- Low Indicator, Lets user know the printer is running out of ink (HP does not
have this)
- Higher Quality Output
Color -- our colors are brighter and more vibrant; HP's colors are dull
HP's composite black (black made with color ink) is very greenish
Encourage users to compare our output to the HP 540; ours is the clear winner
(this assumes all things are equal- same quality paper, etc)
- Availability, the HP 540s are scarce in Distribution, the LJ110's are readily
available.

DECwriter 500i HP DeskJet 540 HP DeskJet 560
List Price $365 List Price $365 List price $719
Color Upgrade $59 Color Kit $49 N/A
The HP 560 has 2 print stations. THis allows the printer to have both a color
printhead and a monochrome printhead in place at the same time; so you can have
both true black and color on the same page with out switching the printheads.
Both the HP500 and the HP 540 have a singe print station and require the user to
switch in and out the color and monochrome printheads. The user pays a premium
for the luxury for the dual print stations.
Difference between 110 and 500:
THe 500 offers 600 x 300 dpi on monochrome printing.
Faster print speed in the 500
Where we win:
- Faster monochrome print speed, 5ppm
- THe LJ520 won BYTE Best for "Best Overall" & "High Quality" won over the TI
microMarc color, HP 540, HP 560, HP 320 and the Cannon BJC-600
- Replaceable Ink Cartidges/You can reuse the monochrome (black) printhead for
10-12 refills ink catridges. Beacuse you do not have to replace the printhead
