3504.0. "Dick Best passes away" by RICKS::PHIPPS (DTN 225.4959) Thu Nov 10 1994 17:09

One of my daughters works at Lahey Clinic/Hospital in Burlington, MA. It
turns out one of her patients is Dick Best. With his wife's permission I'm
entering this note to let his friends at Digital know of his situation if
you did not and that it would help Dick if you could drop him a line and
let you know he is remembered.

If you were thinking of sending flowers, send a contribution to the MDA
society in his name instead. Dick has Muscular Dystrophy and it would be
  appreciated.

Cards can be sent to Dick Best c/o

He must have died after my daughter Jennifer talked to his wife yesterday.
Jenn called me at work today to tell me it was all right to put the address
in notes or in some way let people know he was ill.

A piece of Digital history has passed.

From DIGITAL NEWS - April 1961

                 DICK BEST HEADS DIGITAL ENGINEERING

Digital's chief engineer, Richard L. Best, is the logical designer's logic
designer. His extensive experience in the design field and his encyclopedic
knowledge of solid-state circuit theory are reflected both in his leadership
of Digital's product development staff and in the assistance he gives
Digital customers with particularly knotty applications problems. Dick
came to Digital two years ago from M.I.T. Lincoln Lab, where since 1947 he
had played a key role in developing and supervising the design of circuits
for the Whirlwind I and SAGE air defense computers and the Lincoln memory
systems. Previous to that he had been at the M.I.T. Radiation Lab and
G.E.'s West Lynn Works. Dick received his B.E.E. at Cornell and his M.S.
in E.E. ant M.I.T.
