3421.0. "I'm still here, are you?" by ODIXIE::ROBINSON () Fri Sep 30 1994 16:54

    Could someone in Marketing please publsh a list for those of us in
    Sales as to who is still in Marketing and what they are going to be
    doing this year (i.e. John Doe, Discrete Manufacturing)? Some of us
    Sales folks have now got territories that are outside our old areas
    of expertise and anytime you start looking for someone that used to do
    some marketing job they are gone, moved, not interested, etc.....

    I heard Health Care folks just published a list, but no one out here
    knows of any other group or individuals that have

3421.1No Marketing is Good MarketingGLDOA::WERNERTue Oct 04 1994 12:4719
    FYI. The Automotive Industry Marketing Group in Detroit was wacked a
    week ago. Jim Alberty, the groups manager, and his secretary are the
    only ones left. Jim is busy planning for AUTOFACT 94, coming up in
    November and probably isn't a Noter anyway. It is my understanding that
    there are a few folks left back East somewhere who make up an Aerospace
    Marketing Group. I'm not sure about any of the other Discrete
    Manufacturing Marketing groups. I think there is some sort of a
    Discrete Industies Support Center somewhere, but we haven't heard much
    from them out here yet. There is a Process Industries Support Center
    over in Pittsburg.

    In the words of our fearless leader "there's probably somebody
    somewhere in the company taking care of that (marketing)".

    Marketing! We don't need no stinkin' marketing! People are beating down
    our doors to get to Alpha...or maybe those are bill collectors. Sigh!

3421.2What duz it mean?GLDOA::DBOSAKThe Street PeddlerThu Oct 06 1994 11:4523
    Soooo -- As I go of into the sunset, pray tell, oh Norm, what is the
    long description of your sign off -- I only ask because I was pounding
    down a few brewskis the other evening with some Marketing types and
    your sign-off was a point of discussion.

    It was an interesting discussion -- A sales type who has gone from
    knowing a little about everything to knowing nothing about a lot and
    marketing types trying to figure out why they are known as Stealth
    marketing - trying to figure out your sign-ff.

    Try as we might, we couldn't figure it out -- Finally, one of the MTs
    thought we could develop a message on how ALPHA is so powerful that it
    could provide the answer to: "Why does fuzz grow in your navel?"

    Since I now know nothing about a lot, I thought that this could be the
    beginning of a comeback for me -- I would now know something about fuzz
    -- Who knows -- I could even put an ad in TIME magazine

     -- Anyway, enough frivolity -- Tell me what it means!

    Laaaughingly,

3421.3No marketing ???CFSCTC::PATILAvinash Patil dtn:227-3280Tue Oct 11 1994 14:149
No replies to the base note (except .1) for such a long time ???
What does this mean?

     1) There is no marketing groups(s) left ?
     2) Marketing don't want to declare themselves ?
     3) People are not sure if they are in marketing or not ?

3421.5Lots of changesAKOCOA::DOUGANTue Oct 11 1994 20:2145
    OK - here goes - reluctantly....

    The base question is very difficult because there is no longer such a
    thing as "Marketing".

    Each of the business groups (PCBU, SBU, ABU, MCS, etc.) has it's own
    marketing organisation. In addition there are corporate and CSD level
    strategic groups such as Charlie Hollerans Market Communications group.

    What used to be Product Marketing has been split across these groups.

    What used to be Industry Marketing is in the process of being
    reassigned to the SBU and ABU. In the SBU the work will be focussed on
    the identification, recruitment and management of partners. In the ABU
    the marketing people will be concentrated in expertise centers.

    I'm in Asia Pacific Finance Industry Marketing and am currently working
    on the detail plan for setting up a finance expertise center in AP.
    Similar work is going on in Europe and the Americas. Note that this
    does not imply that such plans necessarily be approved or implemented.

    I think the base note asks about "industry" marketing and the reasons
    for no clear answer are

     1. Industry Marketing has been without appointed leader since
    the departure of Bruce Ryan and then Frank McCabe. Marion Dancy is
    doing a good job managing the move from a "corporate" industry
    marketing group to SBU and ABU, geography based groups.

     2. Various segments have also been without manager (e.g. Finance since
    the departure of Dave Pepin)

     3. The transition is taking place right now. In both senses of the
    word!

    For Finance Industry the following are the contacts: Americas: John
    Haskard @NYO, Europe: Larsake Sandin @JAR, APA: myself (Axel Dougan
    @AKO) and Tom Mullan @MKO.

    Hope this helps,

    Axel

Most of the marketing organization like Old ESG, CMPD etc etc ( as you may be
aware ) no longer exists. For example in the discrete manufacturing space there
is a very small group which deals with 3rd party vendors, porting issues etc
etc ( Mostly partner management ) This group is so over loaded I wonder,
whether they have any time to do real pro-active marketing. ( Also I heard
that they do not have any budget what so ever for Marketing programs ).They
cannot travel, prepare marketing brochures etc etc. Getting a Purchase order
for a trade show or for participation in a user group meeting is a logistical
NIGHTMARE. So most of the people I know tend to give up or not bother about
participating in the trade show. This situation has not changed in the past
1+ year. I am aware of a situation where an employee asked his manager for some
$$$ for an hospitality suite to organize/show the latest DEC products in a
user group meeting.Employee was told by his manager to get free ice from the
hotel and buy the Coke/ potato chips from the local grocery store and use it
for Hospitality suite.The last thing an employee wants to do is to do grocery
shopping during a business trip. No wonder most of the marketing people I
know, just give up.

Also I have heard that some of the channel sales folks think that they can do
this job and do not need marketing etc etc and so the political battle on who
is responsible for the partner management / Marketing etc etc goes on !! Some
how the powers of this corporation does not make a decision and fix this
confusion..

My Suggestion : I believe we do not need several VPs in the Industry marketing
and getting rid of half of the VP's in the marketing alone will provide
sufficient funds for real marketing program.!

As Norm Werner said in the reply 3423.1, Automotive Industry Marketing Group
was whacked few weeks ago and we lost some good people. It is a shame that we
let go some great people, while offering these positions to people with wrong
skill sets, but good politicians, Former PR people, Former Human Resources
people etc etc as Marketing people for technical/product/ applications
marketing etc etc. Cronyism is alive and well at Digital and is growing.
Sheesh !!!

Nobody asked.. Just my opinion.
