3369.0. "Needed: New acronym for Valuing (of) Diversity" by TOOK::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570) Fri Sep 02 1994 15:02

I recently saw, in a job posting, "VOD" used as an abbreviation for "Video
on Demand". This abbreviation makes sense and is probably used outside Digital
too. However, there is a problem in that VOD, within Digital, also stands for
Valuing (of) Diversity.
"VD" could not be used for Valuing Diversity for obvious reasons. "VOD"
seemed like a good choice at the time because it didn't stand for anything
else and the name could easily be altered to fit the acronym. Now there is a
major potential for confusion. Video on Demand will be with Digital for a long
time; it is one of our most promising new businesses and is NOT being sold to
Quantum. I think there is major potential for confusion, and that we need a
new acronym, and possibly a new name to fit the acronym, for Valuing Diversity.

Why? What's wrong with just using the term Valuing Diversity?
Acronyms have become totally out of control. I am in the technical
documentation field, and for clarity, we try to
limit documentation to contain as few acronyms as possible,
Try to do that with Digital documentation. Impossible!

    My thoughts...........

Everyone must Acknowledge diversity....... (A_D) but NO ONE needs
    to value that diversity if:

    you don't want to
no one seems to value your's in return
your values and morals would be compromised if you were to

    Why waste time with it?

Well, yes, we are, Barry.... as well as divestiture, divergence, divination,
divisiveness, divarication, and divagating.

No you didn't....

Re: .0

I don't think there's a problem. Inside Digital, the VoD program seems to
be defunct - I certainly don't see the steady stream of announcements from
the corporate VoD office that I used to.

re .10 no you didn't -try 'ae'(latin 'faeces)

re .1 right one-'valuing' diversity smacks of discrimination-if you
aren't diverse enough then you have no value and fortunately we don't
have *many* silly laws on positive discrimination in Europe yet.I would
suggest that VD be kept for its original needs(Veneral Disease) and
that the diversity movement find something else to carp on about.

If we use STD for Short Term Disability, there's no reason we can't use
VD for Valuing Diversity.

I vote for VD. It's appropriate in that we don't all have it, it
doesn't really define anything specific, those infected have it to
different degrees, some try to ignore it, and others try to infect
everyone around them after they get it.
