3353.0. "DIGITAL closes more facilities????" by MSDOA::SCRIVEN () Thu Aug 25 1994 18:18

Heard this morning from a "very reliable source" that all facilities of
less than 10K sp. ft./14 people will be closing. This has been
confirmed, i.e., the Columbia, SC office will close September 30, 1994.
All people currently there will go to the home program.

What does this mean to you? To me.... It makes me think were just that
    much closer to "closing the doors and turning out the lights" in MASS;
or, are we pleased at what our stock is doing and we're trying to let
them (WS) know our expense reduction will continue....

Once again, I think we've (digital) forgotten our customers. What does
    this tell them?

Any one else fall in the remote category that this will negatively (or
    positively) impact?

    Toodles.....JP

Well, hearing that one small facility is closing does not imply that all
will close.

The rest of your note puzzles me. I don't see what the connection is between
consolidating into larger facilities and serving our customers.

a quick look at the Digital phone book shows that there are 3 branch
office/Servicecenter locations in SC. Closing at least one of them is
not fatal to the business, in my opinion.

In Michigan they are closing almost all the branch offices and putting
employees on the H.O.M.E. program. It is my understanding the are
still going to have remote logistic offices, but not space for offices.
Our office alone has 20 employees.
3353.6Some clarity....I hope!MSDOA::SCRIVENThu Aug 25 1994 19:1117
    re: a couple back....

MASS being our corporate headquarter, "turning out the lights" means
DIGITAL going away. Sorry, I should have been more specific.

They are closing all facilities in SC with the exception (so the rumour
goes) of Greenville. Consolidating into one larger facility isn't the
option. All these people will go on the HOME program and still report
as they have been; only without office space (except at home). This
includes Admin, Sales, MCS, OMS, Sales Support, etc., IF these people
    are kept and not TFSO'd.....

Closing facilities that service many of the top accounts in this
district MAY lead the customer to think that Digital is doing worse if
they have to close these offices......

I hope that clears up my basenote....
3353.7I've resigned. Get them before they get YOU..GLDOA::SEVICThu Aug 25 1994 19:1316
The message I recieved from the Great Lakes District Manager on Monday
listed about 85% of the offices in that area would POSSIBLEY close, all
would down size ( square footage ). The individuals involved in the
closings would go on the home program. What that means for Michigan is
that if that happens, no office outside of Detroit would remain. I
believe that customer will responds very negative to this, if it
happens. Where do all the customer take there PC's that have carryin
warrentys? Drive or send them to Detroit, I think not. How will this
effect the service of some very large customers in Western Michigan?
Bell Alantic has a office in most larges cities in Michigan. Once again
those like a shoot then aim policy.

As a resident of the Columbia, SC it would seem to make a whole lot of sense
to close the office. We have been cut from about 80 people 4 years ago to
somewhere in the mid-20's with only a minor reduction in office space.
The last TFSO cut ALL remaining secretaries with only a receptionist
remaining. There were rumors of spnding >$20K to close off 50% of the
remaining space, but that makes no sense. We have ONE sales support person,
a half dozen sales reps, one digital consulting person (me), and the rest
is Field Service/Order Admin. If I'm doing my job right, I shouldn't ever
be in the office.... I should either be out delivering consulting or finding
new business.

If the H.O.M.E. program means I can have a decent P.C., printer, fax modem and
a separate phone line at home, sign me up.

I would guess closing CBO without doing any further renovation would save
Digital $50K per year.

My old office cost DEC approx $500,000 per year in rent and had on
average 14 people in it (it held 200). The rest were always out on
    customer site.

So, they closed it. So what ? Some people (about 3) got redundancy, the
rest of us work from home.

I like it. I work to my schedule - when there is work at home, I get up
when I like, wear what I like and work how I like. I'm not forced to
put on a suit and go and sit in an office looking bored because all my
    compilers are at home.

When I go to customer sites, nothings changed.

I have a good(ish) link to Easynet - 64Kb ISDN - unusual in the UK but
I'm the pilot for it and its working OK.

In conclusion, don't knock it till you've tried it.

There has been talk about closing or down sizing the Las Vegas office
and using the HOME program. I heard that 140 sites across the US were
targeted. For the amount of people we have left it really is ashame to
keep such a large office. I also heard that Tucson, AZ was another
    target. I'd love to work at home....unfornately I'm logisitcs....best
I can hope for is a "small" package.

We were told in a unit meeting today that facilities with less than
50 people were candidates for closing. We know of one in our
district that is going, and another is likely to go.

Our site has 10 people and about 75% unused space. I think the space
cost around $16,000 a month plus utilities. We have been debnied the
home program so far, but rumors say the office will be closed.

I think its great. About time, and a tremondous cost savings. I
have a very good friend who works for COMPAQ out of his home, and
another for Motorola. Neither of them would ever go back to the
    office environment again.
They both claim they get more done quicker. Have a far more
flexible schedule, and biggest plus, NO OFFICE POLITICS. Hope they
give us the option in Chicago.
BTW, one is in sales support, and the other in field service.

Boston Globe (8/25/94) Business section story on MRO4 sell to Fidelity reports
that:

Digital has 6-7 million sqare feet office/plant space in New England today
and is looking at reducing about 2 million sq feet from it. Also Digital
Massachusettes employee number is reduced from 33000 in 1989 to 17,300
