3352.0. "CNBC: Positive Comments on DEC" by SULACO::JUDICE (May fortune favor the foolish...) Thu Aug 25 1994 17:35

I'm on vacation today, but I had to log in when I heard Dan Dorfman
    on CNBC. To summarize:

    	- major investors are buying into DEC
    	- they like the Alpha/client server/video server story
    	- DEC has $4B in tax-loss carry-forwards
    	- They are looking for $18B revenue in 2-3 years
    	- Target stock price is $50 in 12 months.
    	- Overall feeling that company is back on track.

You can take what Dorfman says with a grain of salt, but I thought
it was nice to hear POSITIVE comments from the financial press.

3352.1It seems to be workingGUCCI::HHOLMESThu Aug 25 1994 18:434
It must be taken positively by the public, today the price of Digital
stock as of this afternoon is $24. There has been brisk trading and
it seems the at Wall Street looks at those and other comments well

Dorfman has been a long time critic of Digital and was predicting
problems for us back in 87 & 88.

They specifically said it was in response to DEC lowering the prices on
PCs like Compaq and IBM. Not because we finally have a Strategy or
    some Direction from SLT.
3352.8Nothing to do with PC price cutsSYOMV::DEEPBye!Fri Aug 26 1994 20:2118
Actually, the report had nothing to do with PC price cuts, and investors
never see slimmer margins as a buying indicator.

The report I saw this morning by Dorfman was a followup to yesterday. He
indicated that it was not "major investors", but "A major investor", singular.
"Major" is an appropriate term since the buy was around 2M shares. This
guy (Roshman? or something) apparently has a nack for finding good buys.

He's looking at $50/share in 12 months.

	He Liked Alpha/AXP.
He thought we could lead the pack in Client/Server Computing
He commented that Digital management is doing all the right things.

Two out of three ain't bad... 8^)

Could it be that Dave Cutler has found a means to buy his way back into
Digital, take control from a stock ownership perspective, and put the
fire and brimstone back into a new DEC culture?

Could it be that Bill Gates has decided to go after Digital from a
fresh perspective -- buy a company whose hardware can support MS
products and change the chip playing field level?

Could it be that there is money to be made with DEC stock in the next
six months that you and I aren't savvy enough to recognize?

Or could it be that some poor trading house's trading system started
buying based on a programming bug?

The next six months will tell all.

I'm not going to wet myself quite yet over Dan Dorfman's
    comments.

If you look back through this file, you'll find dozen of
notes saying 'xxx analyst at yyy firm' has upgraded digital
from a hold to a buy. All the while, the price went from 190
to 18. (I wonder if BP and KO fight over who gets to put
that on their resume?) To me, Dorfman is just one more.

Also, there was a stock that Dorfman was all excited about
back in June/July (that, of course, I can't remember) and
it went up a bit when his column appeared, and then went
    right into the hopper.

My reading of DEC's chart says the price is breaking through
the trend line, but it's a little early to make a
determination; and there there may be lots of price
    resistance around thirty.

It is very possible that the only reason our stock has jumped is
    because of Dan's opinion.

He has picked a lot of winners. When he does his 2 minute thing on
CNBC people listen from all over.

He has so many followers that buy exactly what he says for the short
term gain. It is rare that when he says something that the stock does
not go up about 10% within the week. - Test it.

don't get excited, and read more; small company high tech stocks are
going up dramatically (due to revised ideas of their worth) so this
will drag up other high tech companies. Plus the stock market generally
    is more optimistic

Headline: Digital Equip Up 4%; Dorfman Notes Large Investor Buy >DEC

NEW YORK (AP-DJ)-- Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) was up 4.3% following a
report that California investor Joseph Harrosh had bought roughly 2
million shares of the company over the last few months.
CNBC financial correspondent Dan Dorfman said in his broadcast today that
the West Coast investor was said to have purchased about 50 million dlrs
worth of the stock.
Harrosh, reached in Fremont, Calif., said he was a 'substantial holder'
in Digital Equipment. But he wouldn't elaborate on his stake in the
computer systems and peripherals company, which has been floundering.
Harrosh confirmed that his investments have included stock in turnaround
companies, such as National Data Corp. (NDC), Bolt Beranek & Newman Inc.
(BBN) and preferred shares of Bethlehem Steel. Corp. (BS).
'My history recently has been in turnarounds,' he said.
NYSE-listed Digital Equipment was up 1, or 4.3%, at 24 on volume of 2.5
million shares, compared with average daily volume of 808,100.
Also, as reported earlier today, Digital Equipment and Microsoft Corp.
(MSFT) signed an agreement naming Digital as a world-wide authorized
support center in the Microsoft Solution Provider Program. Separately, it
was reported that Digital is going to sell its database software unit to
Oracle Corp. (ORCL) for about 100 million dlrs.

    >> Hmmm, so money REALLY makes money....

True. I am also reminded of the story of the guy who read that 'penny
shares' were a good investment, because they could double in price far
more easily than more expensive ones.

Sooo, he looks throught the financial pages, selects a company whose
shares are listed at 1p. each, calls up his broker and tells him to buy
10,000 pounds worth. The broker tries to dissuade him, tells him the
company is a shell, the shares are worthless etc., but he insists.

Next day, he opens the paper, and the shares are standing at 2p.
each. He calls his broker, and orders him to buy another 10,000 pounds
worth. The broker again tries to dissuade him, but he is adamant.

Next day, when he looks in the paper, the shares are standing at 3p
each. Figuring that the rise in the price is tailing off, and this is
enough to turn a tidy profit, he calls his broker again. He tells him
"Sell!". The broker replies "Who to?".

$7M .. on paper .. ever tried to unload 2 Million shares? Just like this guy's
buy may have boosted the price, if he dumps it may cause a drop. Nevertheless
he'll probably make a handsome pile of money even if he dumped.

Don't bet on it. My account was told that we'll likely post a loss Q1, and
improve from there over the year.

I believe that the reason was an expected profit for Q1 CY95 which is
our Q3 (Jan-Feb-Mar), although expectations that FY95 will still
result in a net loss for the year. I assume that expectations are for
a profitable Q2 CY95, which is our Q4FY95.
