3329.0. "Largest private E-Mail network" by BONKIN::BOYLE (Tony. Melbourne, Australia) Sun Aug 14 1994 10:14

    In last week's issue of Pacific Computer Weekly there is an article on
    working from home. In one of the articles it says "HP has the largest
    private e-mail network in the world".

    Wasn't this always *our* claim to fame?

    Has it changed or is the article wrong? Digital, being the networking
    company, was always keen to promote the fact that we had the largest
    private network.

    Anyone got any facts/figures.

    Tony.

Interesting. There are more computers working for Digital than
people.

3329.4When is a computer not a computer?DEMON::PILGRM::BAHNCuriouser and Curiouser ...Mon Aug 15 1994 03:427
      That number is probably the sum of all registered non-hidden and
      hidden nodes. That would include printservers and other devices
      that we don't normally think of as "computers."

3329.5PASTIS::MONAHANhumanity is a trojan horseMon Aug 15 1994 07:2713
    	In some environments it is normal to have slightly more computers
    than people. Where I work, most people have a workstation of some sort,
    plus a share of a host cluster, plus a share of print servers,
    dedicated routers... In a demonstration/benchmark centre you would have
    all of the above, plus perhaps another 30 or 40 machines that could
    only be used by booking them for a particular benchmark or
    demonstration. On a factory production floor you would have computers
    that would be networked for purposes of monitoring and stock control
    and similar, but the number of them would be quite unrelated to the
    number of people working there.

    	It just shows we are using what we sell. If you use a computer then
    it will reduce your costs.
3329.6 Many people have more than one system on their desks! SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Mon Aug 15 1994 11:4510

    	Well, I have a VAXstation 3100/76 SPX on my desk which I use for
    nearly everything, and a DECpc 450D2LP (if that means anything to
    anyone?) for the POINT system which I could use for terminal emulations
    as well if it wasn't so unfriendly compared with the VAXstation.

    	Each of my fellow (DECdirect) Tech. Supporters have or soon will
    have a similar setup. So that boosts the numbers a little.

3329.7What is "largest email" network?CFSCTC::PATILAvinash Patil dtn:244-7225Mon Aug 15 1994 13:539
re .0

  Well, the question is how one (HP) defines what is "largets email" network
  in the world. May be HP defines it as most number of email messages sent
  and not the largest number of computers connected to the network. I
  remember reading somewhere that HP was way ahead of Digital in terms of
  number of articles posted on USENET.

You couldn't prove it by me for the non-vendor-specific newsgroups I read.

    Remember, HP is a much bigger COMPANY than DEC, with business lines
    outside of just computers (something like $22B revenue).

    So if they've deployed a company wide E-mail system that touches almost
    all employees it would be bigger than ours based solely on the # of
    users.

    I'd strongly suspect though that AT&T has a bigger e-mail population
    than DEC and HP combined though.

RE more computers than people: that's client/server at work
for you. We are all brain servers to the computers, and
have the capacity to serve multiple clients at once. Maybe
we should sell it: DECbrainserver for VMS, WNT, MSWIN, Unix and
OSF.

    Good point. There must be two dozen systems sitting in the empty
    offices around here, switched on and waiting to receive mail that no
    one would read.

3329.16This seems the obvious questionTNPUBS::JONGSteveSat Aug 20 1994 01:571
    Which company has more employees?
3329.17YIELD::HARRISSat Aug 20 1994 16:475
    I think AT&T then HP then Digital. But that doesn't answer the
    question; otherwise IBM would be above all three. Not ever company
    gives nearly all it's people email access.

    Fair enough, Bruce. But you have to admit the possibility that
    they now have a larger network.
