3279.0. "VTX Servers" by TAMRC::LAURENT (Hal Laurent @ COP) Fri Jul 29 1994 15:56

Can anyone tell me the correct way to determine what VTX servers one
should use? The ones currently configured on my node in area 36
(COPHUB and MAAELF) have been missing in action for several days now,
and in these modern times where we don't have system managers I'm not
really sure how to go about debugging the problem.

A bit of a Catch-22, don't you think? :-) If I could get to a VTX server
I wouldn't need to contact the Corporate Videotex program office.

I know what my local assignments are. Unfortunately, there isn't any
DECNET objects where they point. I need to know:

1: Are the assignments the correct ones?

2: If not, what *are* the correct ones?

3: If so, how do I get the situation fixed at the server location(s)?

In reply to the original base note, COPHUB was removed from the USVL
listing this week. MAAELF was removed quite some time ago.

If you have trouble with the servers listed in the previous reply,
please contact me directly as I handle the weekly update of the USVL
servers and can provide you with a specific node name to use.

Thanks all. Reply 3 should fix me up. I really think this change should
have been better publicized, though. I have the SYSTEM accounts on several
of our nodes forwared to me, and I didn't hear a peep about this.

People, PLEASE get permission of the original author. In this
particular case, either summarizing the relevant information, or
just forwarding a copy of the message to the person who asked the
original question (which, by the way, DOES NOT BELONG IN DIGITAL)
        would have sufficed.

Subject: I/A: USVL VTX Server Change

In an ongoing effort to provide a consistent, highly available level of
service to our customers, we are pleased to announce the migration of the
current USVL VTX servers to specific site-based server systems.

If you are a system manager and your system provides VTX services, your
system will need to be modified to reflect the new USVL VTX server
topology. The assignment of the primary and fail-over VTX servers is
based on the DECnet Area your system is located in, as follows:

o If your system is in DECnet Area 23, assign DLOSS1 as your primary
VTX server and assign ALFSS1 as your secondary VTX server.

o If your system is in DECnet Area 28, assign ALFSS2 as your primary
VTX server and assign ALFSS1 as your secondary VTX server.

o If your system is in DECnet Area 33, assign ALFSS1 as your primary
VTX server and assign DCOSS1 as your secondary VTX server.

o If your system is in DECnet Area 34, assign ACISS1 as your primary
VTX server and assign DLOSS1 as your secondary VTX server.

o If your system is in DECnet Area 36, assign DCOSS1 as your primary
VTX server and assign ACISS1 as your secondary VTX server.

If you are a PC user with the VTX PC Client installed, you should use
Object #199 on your local site server for VTX services. If you do not
know the name of your local site server, please call the CNS HELPDESK at
1-800-332-2468 and select OPTION #2, then OPTION #2 to log a call for this
   information.

Please ensure the changes are completed by July 5th, 1994, as all previous
S/CT USVL VTX server systems will be taken out of service on that date.

If you have any questions about this USVL VTX server system change, please
Answer this message (to the Sender only, please!) and we will work with
   you to answer your question(s).

   Regards,

Your S/CT ~CNS~ USVL Support Team

   Hi Tom,

As the original author of what was posted as reply .3, I give express
permission for the posting of the VTX Server information. I do agree,
though, that you and the other Moderator(s) keep enforcing the rules!

   Thanks,
