3267.0. "Once Upon a Time .. In the WEB..." by DPDMAI::WISNIEWSKI (ADEPT of the Virtual Space.) Sun Jul 24 1994 03:25

I've returned to the Digital Notesfile to Post this note...

As the old Joke goes about two buzzards talking about a guy
    crawling across the desert:

"The heck with waiting, I'm gonna Kill something..."

Let's all try to kill something in the market every day...

    JW.

Once Upon a Time ....

There were these Sales Support folks. Now many of them were turned into
product specialists by edict of an evil prince but that's not what this
story is about.

The entire floor of the once proud ACT stood quiet and empty as the
Sales Support folks lounged listlessly in the heat of a June afternoon.

"What are we going to do?" asked one.

"I haven't been on a Sales Call since the last reorg..." said another.

"Yeah, my Sales Reps are all consumed trying to figure out the new
compensation program on their pocket calculators.. I wish they'd
use a computer for that..." said a third.

Then a small spark came to life in one of the Sale Support folk...

"Say you guys... What if we had a show and invited the entire neighborhood?
Darla, you can tapdance, Spanky can do magic and Alfalfa, you can sing
 and....." The inspired one babbled.

"Hold on Barnum!" interupted the cyberpunk "This is a Digital ACT, eh, Demo
Center, eh Some Such thing... Anyways, we have to have something relevent
to show to Digital Customers..."

"Like what?" asked the inspired babbler.

"Well.. Internet is really hot these days, we could get like all those
rusting VAXstations..." The cyberpunk was cut off

"The O-L-D ones that are on our desks right now?" Injected the E-mail
 mistress

"Yeah, those are the ones... They can be slow as long as they have Xwindows"
replied the cyberpunk " We could get all the Xwindow devices we can find
and have a WEB DAY! We'll invite the customers in and then let them see
the new AXPs running WNT, OSF/1 and OpenVMS, maybe even MS Windows All
hooked to the Internet and running Mosaic surfing the World-Wide-Web!

"Hey, that's a great idea" said the Security Guard "We could do some
quick and dirty break out sessions for them on Internet firewalls
 and security and ..."

"I got some DECspin cards and cameras in a closet" said the Unix wizard..
"And I bet that we could get some FDDI cables to connect a couple workstations
and show teleconferencing, before we cancel the program..."

"I'll do one on E-mail Corporate backbones integrating to the Internet"
 added the E-mail mistress...

"Great!" exclaimed the cyberpunk "And I can do an Introduction to the
the World-Wide-Web and the Mosaic Hypertext tool..."

"But who's going to go tell the Manager what we're doing?" asked the
 Workstation Wizard.

The excited band decided that it was not in the best interest of the
project to tell the managers (right away) that they were embarking on
such an outward, customer focused project without consulting corporate
marketing first. So without even a whisper they quickly set about their
tasks in preparation for the up coming event.

Presentations were discussed and decided upon, the ACT (eh, Demo Center,
Whatever it's called right now) was reserved, and plans were made to
deliver all the information about Digital's Internet Products and offerings
to our customers.

The task remained to actually "INVITE" the customers to the event...

The Workstation Wizard Sent out a message via ALL-IN-1 to the Sales and
Services folks in the local geography...

The cyberpunk posted a general invitation to the Internet, DECUS and the
dfw.general newsgroup...

The other's in Sales Support told their customers and the RSVPs rolled
in....

After the first 50 customers RSVP'd the Sales Support folks decided to
tell the managers what they were doing...

"Good Idea..." said the manager.

Satisfied that they weren't angering anyone in managment, the
Sales Support foilks made their final prepartions for WEB SURFING DAY...

On the day before the "Event" everyone scurried around the ACT hooking up
workstations, moving cables, decorating the walls with nets, beach towels,
Surfer icons and tropical lais (eh lays).

The Mosaic softwares were installed on a Cluster of OpenVMS VAXstations,
A Clump of OSF/1 workstations, a Collection of WNT AXP PCs, and on
a single Client Intel PC running Windows 3.1 (although the PC continually
    hung on GIF images)...

The software was tested and Home pages from thoughout the net were put into
the Hot List for easy access by the customers who were to come.

Late into the night the intrepid band of Sales Support fellows worked
preparing for the throng of customer who were scheduled to arrive. Internet
information was assembled and 70 copies of Net and Web locations were
Duplicated, Handouts for the sessions were duplicated, and DECUS newsletters
with applications for that Digital User Society.

Everyone went home early (9:00pm) to get a good night's sleep before the
customer event.

The Morning of the Day of the event was chaos. Last minute handout
duplications, quick trip to Target for three large bags of popcorn and
many 12 ounce cans of soft drinks were purchased (expensed as an internal
SBS training Lunch least anyone find out that it was spent to entertain
customers)

Coolers full of drinks were place on beach towels around the facility
to look just like a Surfing Party...Then came Lunchtime...
The Sales Support Folks were all wearing Hawian Shirts and shorts,
and sported Lais and sun glasses (to differenciate them from
the customers who would not be wearing sunglasses indoors...)

The entire ACT became quiet and still as the Sale Support folks gave up
their Lunch hour to fill in their SBS, claiming that they were all
working on teaching the Admin folks how to use MS Windows and Hearts...

But then everyone returned and the first customer arrived at 1:15pm,
then another, and another, the sessions were to start at 2:00pm so
they were badged and sent to the Workstation Farm to play.

Already logged in, the customers pulled up MPEGs of the comet hitting
Jupiter, JPEGS of Real Estate offered on the Net, and the last three
episodes of Beevis and Butthead...

Too soon for most, the introduction session was announced and all the
customer's gathered in the main room.

The Cyberpunk and the Workstation Guru did a Tag-Team of information
on Digital's Internet Offerings and our NEW ALPHA AXP workstations that
all came Internet ready with Mosaic and TCP/IP. Then the agenda was
announced and the customers heard about all the good things Digital
Can help them to do:

S.E.A.L and Firewall security for isolating Corporate Networks from
the legion of Hackers and Crackers on the NeT...

X.400 and X.500 Mail services that can route between corporate mail
systems and the Internet.

DECspin and video conferencing showing the Multi-Media solutions
that Digital Can Provide.

And MOSAIC, Digital's commitment to making the Internet easily navigatable
and easy to use.

After the breakout sessions the customers went back to the Workstation
Farm and navigated to the White House, the Vatican, Cern, and Wired magazine,
everyone was excited and played on the Information Superhwy courtesy
of Digital...

The sales support folks finally used a stun-gun on the last customer and
placed them in an elevator ACT at 6:10pm... Some Customers just didn't
want to leave -- Or take a hint...

Almost 70 customers attended and learned about Digital's offerings and
wares, many of whom had never done business with Digital before...

The close was to qualify and get follow on customer meetings for Monday and
Tuesday of the following week. American Airlines, TI, and several
other customers made appointments with Digital consultants to discuss
and learn more of how we can help them, Everyone seems to want Home
    Pages...

______________________

Some folks asked what we were selling, others didn't understand the
reason for the mix of customers (not targeted by industry) but for the
sales support folks it was a triumph...

At a net cost to Digital of $60.00 in expenses (which haven't been
turned in yet;-)70+ customers were entertained, educated, and thought
that Digital had some pretty amazing products.

And you know what... We really do...

And after this dry run, we're gonna do this again next month and tell
150 customers what great products Digital has... And we may even sell
them something in all the excitement;-)

Now This has been a nice Bedtime story for Digital folks...

Read it and have nothing but good dreams about our future...

We do in Dallas... Good Night... Sleep tight...

And tommorow, try to focus on customers first...

Welcome back John! Good to see you've kept your spirits up.

Sounds like a good enough agenda - gotta make sure we actually *SELL*

straight out of Digital Consulting Electronic Commerce (oops - guess
we're gonna have to bribe the Sales Supp. Specs. & pay x-charge for

I'm glad that John 'came back' to post this. An example of 'grass roots'
efforts to try and break Digital out of the lethargy and chaos that is
sapping our energy.

If leadership isn't coming from the top, perhaps leadership from the bottom can
lead to a turn-around. Better still, perhaps all levels can work together
towards a common goal. Instead of 1000 different directions.

Outstanding! And worth duplicating: an event like this could be just as
successful and fun at many other Digital locations. In fact, I would
love to see a nifty home page for every ACT ... eh, demo center (or
whatever they're called these days :-).

Great job!

I attended both the DECUS forum and part of the Internet seminar John's

Perhaps the people in the newly formed Internet Business Group
should be made aware of this grassroots approach of selling
"Digital" and it's internet related products.

Maybe they can provide loaner hardware too :-)

I'd be interested in viewing slides in available.

Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT - INTERNET BUSINESS GROUP - ROSE ANN GIORDANO

I am pleased to announce the creation and immediate operation of the
Internet Business Group. It is also my pleasure to announce the
appointment of Rose Ann Giordano as Vice President of the Internet
Business Group, reporting to me. This group is one of the key
components of the Advanced Technology Group (ATG), which was formed this
week with the public announcement of the new company structure.

Digital has two key elements of success in this rapidly growing Internet
Market--recognized industry leadership and strong customer demand. To
turn these opportunities into revenue, we need a flexible team that can
move quickly, partner extensively, and use non-traditional methods to
reach and serve customers.

The Internet Business Group will be comprised of individuals with skills
in marketing, engineering, consulting, sales support, and sales channel
development. This new group will work closely with existing
organizations which already provide Internet solutions, both for
customers as well as for Digital's internal use.

We owe our current leadership position to the foresight and innovation
of our Corporate Research group and their aggressive partnership with a
virtual team of individuals from various parts of the company. Some of
Digital's successes to date include:

o the first in the industry to take advantage of the capabilities
of the World Wide Web -- ensuring our marketing information was
       readily available to customers and prospects;

o the creation of the world's best Internet security offering
(S.E.A.L.) -- due to our long and effective experience in
       protecting our internal network from intrusion;

o the utilization of the Internet as a channel for direct sales
       through our Electronic Connection;

o the development of a number of complex Internet projects with
large customers, originating with our Digital Consulting
       business;

o the announcement of our intention to bundle Mosaic Internet
navigation software with all our base systems.

That is an impressive beginning, but this is a fast-moving and highly
competitive market. With 30 million users, the Internet is growing at a
rate of more than a million users a month. Traffic using multi-media,
hypertext World Wide Web capabilities is growing at greater than one
percent per day. In addition, use of the Internet as a business tool
both enables and demands creative business practices and partnerships--
especially in the realm of Electronic Commerce. Here, where there is no
"business as usual," success requires strong leadership.

In her 15 years at Digital, Rose Ann has successfully managed multiple
business, marketing, sales and engineering organizations which have
faced widely different challenges. She was named Vice President in 1984
and most recently led the Software FrameWorks Engineering organization.
Prior to Digital, Rose Ann held a succession of technical, sales, and
marketing positions with the Data Systems Division of the Xerox Corporation.
She was a member of the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories.

Please give Rose Ann and her team your full support and cooperation as
she drives forward with innovative measures to profitably grow the
Internet business.

INFORMATION SUPERHWY DAY AT THE DIGITAL ACT 9/15/94
*Background*

Today 33 million people have Internet E-mail from work and school, within
the next 18 months over 100 million will have Internet access from their
Company's computer systems.

Digital wants to help companies to understand and utilize this Information
technology to become more efficient as users, consumers, navigators and
vendors on the Information Superhwy.

E-mail, Internet Firewalls and Security, Mosaic Home Pages, and
Internet access, is rapidly expanding the connection between companies
and individuals at a rate faster than any information infrastructure
in history (remember when the Telephone caught on, it's happening
again folks;-).

Digital can help to connect into that expanding infrastructure today and
help businesses navigate and use resources, advertise and transact
business instantaneously instead of using U.S. Mail or courier services
and at much lower costs.

CATCH THE WAVE

The new "Information Superhighway" is on everyone's mind right
now. What is it really? How can I use it for my company? How can I
use it for my job? How can I get access to it?

Well asking questions and reading about it just won't do; you have to
"EXPERIENCE" the Information Superhighway before you can truly understand
it!

On Thursday, August 25th, you have the opportunity to explore the
Information Superhighway firsthand, directly from Digital's own
secure Internet access points, using Digital's PCs and workstations.

Digital will give you an opportunity to experience the World Wide Web
(WWW, Web, W3) and Mosaic, Internet News and E-mail . These tools provide
an easy to use multimedia and hypertext interface with which to navigate
and use the Information Superhighway.

You'll breeze through connections to your favorite university, NASA,
Library of Congress, The Vatican, The Smithsonian, World famous archives,
and Access the Home Pages of your favorite vendors and clients (Of course
Digital home page is well represented!).

As you "WebSurf" the thousands of other sites in the US, Canada, Europe
and Asia you'll understand the power and usefulness of the Internet, by
searching and reading technical papers and documents online, accessing
and viewing Movie and Music previews, downloading free software and
patches, or reading Electronic Magazines that will never be distributed
on paper (unless you print them out;-).

When you see what the Information Superhighway is capable of, you will
understand how it will play a major role in your future business success,
and the education of your children not tommorow -- but TODAY.

But why wait for the Internet to come to your home? The future is already
here and you can "SURF" the network August 25th at Digital.

WHERE DO WE BEGIN?

You begin by attending Internet Day at the Digital Application Center
for Technology (ACT)! Come and listen to Breakout sessions on
E-mail and Web Technology or just experience first hand the new media
tools on Digital's new 64-bit PCs and workstations (the fastest in the
industry!) running MSwindows, WNT, OSF/1 (Unix) and OpenVMS.

The agenda will consist of an introduction and breakouts on
various Internet topics and hands on use of the Mosaic Web Reading
tools (that come at no additional charge with all new Digital 64 bit
workstations!). Customers can listen to the presentations or just
SURF the network compliments of Digital Equipment Corporation.

To experience the Information Superhighway you need to do three things:

    1. RSVP (to insure good seating) by calling the Digital
Application Center for Technology (ACT) (214-702-4400)

    2. Come to the ACT between 1:30pm and 6:00pm on September 15th

    3. Have some Web Surf'n fun and learn about the Internet!

We certainly have the knowledge around here to do this. I'd be happy to help
out if someone wanted to organize it. Don't have the time to organize it (or,
for that matter, to pee, most of the time) nor do I have access to the hardware
we'd need. But I'd be happy to give some guidance. I happen to know that Wiz
will be in town near the end of the month - maybe we can get him to come up
early (hey John, what are you doing on the 24th :-))?

We also have all sorts of groups popping up with Internet in their titles, all
around GMA. I'll send a blitz around and see if I can scare up some interest.

It sounds like this could/should be a function of the internet
business group, right ? Perhaps the request could be cross posted
in the internet tools notes conference.

I'm curious as to whether these (customer focused) seminars
generate potential sales of DEC hardware/software/services?
or justs educates our customers about "WEB surfing". I would
think that generating any "good will", such as free seminars,

Sorry folks I can only take care of one corner of the world at a
    time;-)

We had about 80 people in Aug, 50% or more had never had contact with
Digital. We have made quite a splash in Texas (folks from Austin,
Houston and even Mexico have registered and come to the events)

Here is net-invitation we sent out to some appropriate newsgroups.

What are we selling? Digital and Digital Expertise. And before
you think that it's all services the props for this effort include
Digital PCs, AXPs, workstations, and even Xterminals and printers...

We'll touch another 80 customers on Sept 15th, and see how it
goes Oct 20th... We've had some very good press on this event from
customers, new prospects, and the netwise.. We just have to keep
    it going...

This could (would?) say a lot about out networking capabilities,
especially if there were a bunch of sites working together, all over

Some of the more popular Internet destinations are presumably capacity limited.
This may indicate that our capacity is higher than most!
