3112.0. "Where is the ZKO Time Capsule?" by E::EVANS () Thu May 26 1994 15:22

A number of years ago, when the Spit Brook Road facility was built in
Nashua, NH, a time capsule was buried in the walkway of the main entrance
to the facility. I recall that this time capsule was buried under the
direction of Gordon Bell and was to contain artifacts to remind Digital
engineers of their heritage. I believe that the bronze plaque had
instructions that it was to be dug up sometime in 1996. This morning,
I noticed that the time capsule was missing and that the walkway had been
repaired at that spot.

Does anyone know what happened to the ZKO time capsule?

Got a memo awhile ago - saying that the time capsule had been water
damaged and was dug up - I don't remember what they said they did with
the stuff inside - you may want to check with Facilties.

maybe they thought they could get a few bucks at a pawn shop for the
bronze plaque and the container... ;-)

what's exactly is inside the time capsule any way? any one knows and
can tell us, (unless i its digital confidential offcourse), this
sounds so exciting, i hanged around ZKO myself for the last 3
years and had no idea about this capsule.

    thanks in advanced.

The time capsule apparently ruptured during the eternal repairs to
the sidewalk heating system, and the capsule was removed. I understood
that the contents was disposed of since it had all been basically
destroyed by time and neglect and was considered worthless.

The inscription on the plaaque read "to be opened by engineers on
(May xx?) 1996, that they may better understand their heritage."
Ironically, I think it has achieved that goal.

As an aside, the importance of the date of opening was that it was
to be, as I recall, Peter Christy's fiftieth Birthday.

No, it was Bill Heffner's 65th, I think.

I'm saddened to hear that the contents were destroyed. I had inserted a
copy of "CPU Wars" and there were many other interesting items there.

Don't worry, I still have my copy of "CPU Wars", if you're feeling
nostalgic. I even brought it in to work a couple of weeks ago for a
couple of folks who were feeling that way - and you may have noticed,
after all these years, I am now working *in the Mill*. I even like
it... I heard the rumor about the geriatric facility a month ago. I'll
believe it when they deliver packing boxes to my cube.

You think I'd give up my only copy? Surely you jest! I have two
others, one of them autographed by Charlie Andres. I also have
a full set of the originals as distributed by Charlie.

Gee and I thought my originals would be worth something. I also have one
of his original "Play adventure on a computer near you" T-shirts. Actually,
that T-shirt was how I got into engineering. I was in Ed. Svcs, and went up
to get the shirt in Tewksbury, only to find he'd moved out earlier in the
week. However, I happened to run into Kim Kinnear, and jokingly made some
remark about jobs. Kim told me he was leaving the RSX mp group, and two days
later I had an offer. I no longer joke about such things.

I heard that in the time capsule, it had some financials of when we
used to be profitable. That is word that is not in our vocabulary now.

Ahh, the good ole days. Seems like nowadays everyone is requesting the
package, instead of fearing getting tapped.
