3078.0. "Company Goodwill" by AIMHI::JMARTIN () Wed May 18 1994 17:35

Comments on how this will effective Digital's image in the community?

--------------------------------------------------------
The Senior Leadership Team recently approved a number of actions that
will cut costs and minimize expenses. One of those actions calls for
the suspension of the company match for employee charitable
contributions made through the Matching Gift and United Way programs.

The following will provide more specific information on each of the
  program areas.

     EMPLOYEE MATCHING GIFTS

The Employee Matching Gift program will be suspended at the end of
business on Thursday, June 30, 1994.

Employee gifts made to Digital-approved organizations by June 30th
will be matched at $0.50-on-the-dollar, PROVIDED THAT the completed
Employee Matching Gift form is received FROM THE ORGANIZATION by
the Digital Matching Gift office NO LATER THAN June 30th at 5:00PM
     (Eastern Time).

     UNITED WAY MATCHING PROGRAM

The company match of $0.50-on-the-dollar will be suspended for
     future employee United Way campaigns.

Within the next few days, the Corporate Community Relations staff will
notify the recipient organizations of the program changes.

I'd venture to say that they'll be disappointed but will understand that
it's necessary given DEC's losses. It's being billed as a suspension.
If and when we become profitable, they'll be upset if we don't resume
the program.
3078.2We probably couldn't have afforded anythig to match, anywayTOOK::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Wed May 18 1994 17:498
Now the real question is whether or not this fall there will be the annual
all-out effort on the part of DIGITAL management to solicit us for
participation in the United Way campaign.

One would hope they'd have the good sense not to be so tacky, but then this
is the new DIGITAL . . .

First of all, I believe its important to understand that Digital and
its employees have had a long history of supporting worth wild community
projects with matching funds. Digital should be commended for this.

I would imagine that once we pull thru these times this issue will be
reviewed although the fact of the matter is that when times get tuff
these voluntary items are subject to scrutiny. In my opinion the
past goodwill of the company plus the challenges we face to keep this
company afloat outweigh any temporary image issues. I back the Senior
    Leadership Team decision.

I agree. The U.W. campaign represents a huge investment of man-hours from
the people putting it on and from the people who read the material and attend
the video showings and meetings. It also represents a significant investment of
paper printing and handling. If Digital can't afford to match employee donations
to U.W., they can't afford to spend this huge sum money on the campaign, even
though most of this expenditure is "hidden".
Also note that, as has been discussed in other topics, the U.W. campaign re-
presents a double standard: Digital can solicit for THIS cause on company time
and with company resources, but nobody can solicit for any other cause.

Hey, once they cut my holiday turkey I figured *anything* could

The UW campaign should be handled very simply. Issue the pledge cards
with the paychecks and anyone wanting to donate will return the pledge
card. All the meetings and other hoopla are unnecessary.

PS. The cancellation of matching funds was also timed so as not to
    affect the AIDs walk.

Sales/Revenue is the problem, not saving nickles and dimes associated
    with a gift matching program.
