2949.0. "Congratulations and HATS OFF to the PC division" by SMAUG::GARROD (DCU Board of Director's Candidate) Mon Mar 21 1994 23:56

Since I'm somebody who never shys away from criticising things that I
think are done poorly it gives me great pleasure to write this note.

When I got home today I found Digital's Winter PCatolog in the mail.
I was astounded, I'd never ordered it so it must have come because I
subscribed to PC Week or something (attaboy 1, some good target
marketing. I'm actually thinking of buying a PC for myself).

But much more important than the fact I received this catalogue is that
I was VERY pleasantly surprised by its quality. The team that put this
together deserves a lot of praise:

    	- I found it EXCEPTIONALLY easy to get a good feel for the range
    	  of PCs that Digital offers

    	- The pullout front page gives a great overview and the use of
color coding makes it very easy to find the section you are
    	  interested in.

    	- Prices quoted are obvious, nothing hidden.

    	- I really like the 2 pages on each PC they give on how to configure
your own PC if the packages on the previous page don't match
    	  what you want.

        - Each PC seems to fill a market segment. Nice to see that there is
little overlap across our PC range.

    	- Excellent use of little insets all over the place giving
differentiators around SERVICE that Digital gives.
Ie "Beyond the Box". Nice to see the slogan backed up by some
    	  substance.

    	- It has an index! Nice afterthought.

    	- Great pointer to the "Service in a Box" page.

Seeing things like this makes me proud to work for Digital again. The
PC division really seems to have their act together. All power to them.

If anybody knows who was responsible for this revision of the PC
catalogue please feel free to extract this note and forward it to them
and if anybody knows who their manager is tell them to give them a good
    raise.

    Dave

I just received Digital's winter PC catalogue. As an employee of Digital
seeing such a high quality advertising piece made me feel good about the
company. I would appreciate it if you could forward the following to the
people responsible for this catalogue. I feel they've done an excellent job
and are well worthy of praise, as is the whole PC division.

I particularly liked the volume discount on DECwrite, listed as:

DECwrite V2.0 for Windows, Volume Discount: 10 copies for $254 each -- $2362

(You can sort of tell that DECwrite isn't a math package.)
2949.3The technical explanationLATVMS::BRANAMTue Mar 22 1994 15:215
Those are IAPX Virtual dollars. You set the DS register (dollar
segment register) to the number of dollars, which is multiplied
by the VM (volume mapping) register, using the virtual mapping
factor of 1.07539865. Really, this is all well-established computer
science, as naturally as 2^16 is 65536.
2949.4PC sales = Alpha?ODIXIE::PERRAULTTue Mar 22 1994 16:016
An interesting bit of info. regarding the PC unit. If all alpha sales
are currently "about" $2.0b and PC business is expected to be in that
range, then the other $10.0 (total $14.0b) is not very clear. I know
that Alpha sales are ramping up, but that will be a steep climb.

    Just an observation.

There's still a bunch of VAX sales, storage, components & services.
From the last Palmer DVN the breakdown of the company was the following:

Systems BU 40% (VAX and Alpha systems, software & networks)
    PC BU 10%
    Storage BU 9%
    Components & Periph 9%
    Digital Consulting	14%
    MCS 30%

I'm glad the catalogues designers got to see the feedback.

Dear Dave,

Message received! We do, in fact, know who is responsible for the catalog
design. We copied them and they were delighted with your mail!

On behalf of the team, and for myself, I thank you for taking the time to send
off such positive feedback.

Keep those cards and letters coming!

Best regards,

It will be a steep climb, but it's nice to see some units turning around.

The PC BU at 10% is just about breaking even.
The Video segment of Components & Periph, about 5% is running close to 30% PBT.
The biggest problem we still need to work on is the Systems BU.

Maybe not the right note, but not being a Marketing buff, I just
wanted to ask 'Whom' might be able to get a DECpc AXP 150 medallion
on the front of the box used for the DEC Professional April '94 mag.
Page 51 has a picture of the "AXP 150" that's missing a medallion in
the front. Could be an Intel inside, a Pentium, a 433ST, etc, etc.

Just in case they wanted to use that machine for another
picture in the near future. Probably not a big deal to most, but
with all the flavors I see go down the line, the Medallion is the
only thing that tells me what's inside. (Except of course the
Intel Inside sticker that goes on the front panel, and the outside
    	of the shipping box.)

I can't wait to see what's in the works for the
AlphaGeneration stickers and T-shirts, but I hope they remember
to stick 'em on anything that moves off that production line.

2949.9when will we see a DEC PC stores?STAR::ABBASIiam thinking about doing itFri Apr 08 1994 20:0616

why don't DEC open a DEC PC stores to sell its PC's related equipment?

if DEC starts by opening one or 2 stores in masusususteteetsts as a
trial basis to see how they work out, may be if they are successful
they can open more stores through the country.

i'v used to see IBM PC stores (have not seen some for a while though),
so, why can't DEC open a PC stores? it can;t cost that much to do and
it will help spread the word about our PC's to the public also. i
suggest to open the store in big busy mall, and fill it with our PC's
and printers and stuff like that.

why no one have thought of this before?

2949.13Leave the retailing to retailers!USHS01::HARDMANMassive Action = Massive ResultsSat Apr 09 1994 22:1116
Why would Digital need PC stores? IBM doesn't have 'em, Compaq doesn't
have 'em, Dell doesn't have 'em, Gateway doesn't...... Get my point?

There are zillions of PC retailers out there, selling any and every
brand they can get their hands on. We just need to get Digital products
into THEIR stores. Then they can carry the overhead of retail space,
constant employee turnover, inventory (that often sells below cost as
prices drop so fast!), etc. Digital needs to focus on making computers.
Let the folks that are in the retail business do the retailing. (Even
    Wal-Mart is selling PC's now!)

Digital PC's are showing up in some of the local retail ads in the
daily business section of the Houston papers. At last...

IBM does have something called an outlet store. (albeit a few) I
saw this a few weeks ago on some TV magazine show. I think it was
way to (cheaply) deal some of their excess inventory.

But, more to the point, I do agree that getting our products to
retails stores should be the focus. And from what I've heard, it
     will happen fairly soon.

2949.15QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centMon Apr 11 1994 13:499
IBM has only one outlet store - just opened.

We don't need a Digital PC store - we need to have our products alongside
Dell, Compaq and IBM in the existing superstores which have a much larger
customer base than we could ever dream of getting with our own stores.

We do have products which can be competitive in these markets.

Yesterday, I was checking out the PC's available at the local Sam's
Warehouse Club. They had IBM, Compaq, Dell, ALR and Packard Bell
systems available. (The best deal I saw was a Compaq 486 DX2/50 with
two floppy drives, 340 meg hard drive, 8 meg of ram and a 15 inch
monitor capable of up to 1024x768 display. All for $1,699!) No way
would a single-vendor retail store be able to compete with places like
    this.

Digital needs to have their systems sitting next to those other brands
    in existing outlets!!!

i read that we now sell DEC printers at Lechmiere store here in
pleasent lane mall in nashua (near ZKO) at the boarder of new hamshire
    and massesususteetets.

i wonder what took us sooo long to put our printers for sale in the
mall and why we did not do this years ago ?
