    re-evaluating everything in light of the latest earnings.  Most likely

    No official word yet here, but we in DLS have been told tomorrow
    (Tuesday) we will be informed of which individuals have been "affected"
    within our group.  This can only mean DLS is loosing more people.

    Having just (10:00am this morning) gone through the TFSO (Transition
    Financial Support option) process with a HR (Human Resource) person
    I believe I can speak with some knowledge on the "package."
    
    Salary continuation for 4 weeks (plus one more check to make up for the
    "missing paycheck effect" when you started working). Then a lump sum
    payment of 1.)one week pay for each year worked (part of year will be
    payed) 0-4 min.= 4 weeks 2.) vacation and personal holidays left on the
    books are paid. I don't know about any max. on 1 & 2.
    
    Health benefits continued for 4 weeks plus 1 week for each year of
    service. You then have 30 days to assume the policy without an exam.
    This is high risk for the insurance company and the cost maybe HIGH.
    You might be able to get a cheaper policy on your own provided you
    don't have an existing health condition. If you have an existing health
    condition you'll want to assume the coverage of the policy (without the
    health exam) mentioned above.
    
    You will be given 6 months of "free" outplacement services of Drake Beam 
    Morin, a national company.
    
    One last thing, when they give you the package (happened this morning
    to me), you have until Friday (Jan.28, 1994 5:00pm EST) to find another
    job within DEC (no it's not DEC anymore - make that Digital).
    
    Now don't quote me on any of this. It's what I remembered and what's on
    my paperwork. If you are TFSOed (let's call it layed off) you'll be
    given all the necessary information.
    
    Personally, I not bent or anything like that - a little disappointed
    maybe, but I'm not going to flame about it (at least not when I have
    internal job interview today at 4:00pm). We'll wait and see what I'll
    have to say come Friday 5:00pm EST.

    this reallly fries my butt. i just deleted two memos from my management
    advertsing two DLS positions looking to hire people in our PSC. and
    people wonder why morale is in the tank. there seems no consideration
    in trying to save expereienced people. hack here. hack there. add here.
    add there. doesn't give one much hope that anyone really knows what the
    hell is going on.

    Jack,  I for one will be interested to hear, if you so choose, how you
    so quickly lined up an interview at 4:00 pm on the day you were
    "tfso'd".  that kind of knowledge may come in handy rather quickly to
    us.  Call me off line if you want.

    It is not only your area that had req's open.  Apparently there were
    req's recently opened in Atlanta, or somewhere in the south.  If these
    are the memos you referred to, they may still be available.  Who knows
    how things work.
    
    
    Also, it appears now our office is on hold until next week for
    notification (unoffical word that has reached me).  We must now all sit
    on our hands for 7 days and wonder.  I know it wasn't intended, but it
    makes the days tick by all the more slowly.

    Here in the MARVA district 4 seasoned district Support Engineers
    3 of which I have known for 13 years . Their combined time with DEC
    would probably exceed 50 years.
    
    However Im glad its not me and I believe they were in the wrong place
    at the wrong time. I wish them Good Luck  in the future.

    I recently had a conversation with a manager who was hiring about said
    memo.  Seems he was concerned about how it might be "too difficult" to
    push such an approval request through to a VP if the person in question
    were "just a sales support person".
    
    I almost hit the roof!  Looks like this VP signature business is yet
    another way to hurt the worker bees.  And I thought it was a way put
    and end to the "good old boy" network.

    FABS got hit today. Don't know how many people.
    
    It's very clear about this VP approval. Every time we have layoffs,
    head count hasn't gone down as much as needed. So now they give you
    'till the end of the week to line something up, and oh by the way,
    a veep must sign off on it.
    
    I bet all the veeps are in  "closed" door meetings this friday.

My cut at the VP signature requirement (I work in engineering if it matters) is
some FINALLY realized that there were just too many people with open reqs
hiring people who were  over or under qualified (either in title or pay) for
positions they have available - just because of an assumption of how this
person MAY perform at this job.  

I have heard many stories of "high level manangers" suddenly becoming
an "individual contributor" while the current individual contributors are being
TFSO'ed.  There are cases where this works, there are cases where this fails
(I've seen more failures that successes).

I like to think that the requirement is someone's attempt to cut down on the 
"old-boy" network saving old friends or ex-co-worker at the last minute.

    I agree that the scenario you describe SHOULD be how it works.  My
    question is, if a req is open and someone with the IDENTICAL job code
    (and has had that job code for a number of years) applies for the job,
    why should VP approval be needed?
    
    I have nothing against requiring VP approval for people moving into
    positions with dissimilar job codes and skillsets.

    	CSS (now EIS?) in MKO got hit pretty hard.  I had my meeting
    	yesterday at 11:30.  Done Friday @5pm.  My manager made it sound
    	like they would help to get the VP signature.
    
    	My problem with all this is that from my point of view, it 'seems'
    	like it's more workers than managers.  But, what do I know?
    
    	Right now I'm struggling with whether I want to find another job
    	in DEC.  Ooops, this isn't DEC anymore in name or nature......
    
    	The note from the fellow TFSO'd is right on as to the details.
    
    	Personally, I feel more sorry for digital than I do for myself.
    	Get those resumes up to date.  There's very little warning, and
    	who gets hit defies logic.

    Don't know if this has been pointed out yet or not, but while searching
    through VTX BENEFITS yesterday for some retirement information, I
    noticed that TFSO is listed as a benefit. Guess we have to keep up with
    the industry standard huh?
