2686.0. "Delivery Training?" by THEBAY::CHABANED (Spasticus Dyslexicus) Fri Sep 24 1993 17:16

Anyone know what the status of DPM training is? (Course EY-F273e-L0)

Since I've been told I need to spend 20% of my time doing delivery,
seems only logical that this training be offered. VTX says no classes
    are scheduled.

    Hi,

If you will send me more info on wht you are looking for, I will send
you the infon training. Courses on DPM itself are not usually offered.
The topic is covered in two (three) other courses, however, both of
    which require special registration.

Having read the previous note, I feel like I should spend a little more
time on a response to this base note. We, in the training business,
spend a fair amount of time thinking about these issues, and as a
result, have some fairly well thought out (if not perfect) reasons for
    what we do.

DPM (which has changed significantly recently) simply describes a
construct or architecture under (in?) which solutions and/or or consulting
are delivered. While it used to be, more or less, a systems development
life cycle (waterfall), now it is much broader and involves much more:

    	- Business policies and procedures (Program Roadmap for example)
    	- Project and program management methodologies
    	- Implementation methodologies (not limiteware)
    	- Support tools (training, job aides, marketing, etc.)

Look in Buffer::MTT$PUBLIC or VTX MTT for a great deal of information
about what DPM now comprises -- you may be suprised!

Because DPM isn't a skill, we have found that DPM (as it now exists)
training works best when it is in the context of skills training. So we
teach DPM as the context in which Project Management and Program
Management are performed. Courses in Bid Analysis or Delivery Finance
use it as the context also.

If you are a delivery person, and you want to understand what DPM is,
order the manuals described in either of the places I have listed
above. Then learn the particular implementation methology used by your
professional domain (Rapid prototyping, 4GL, Consulting, etc.).

Let me know if you (any of you) want or need more info.

So, if you know how to project/programme manage, all you need to
do to be able to deliver within the DPM framework is read the manual?

	Thanks,

    re: .3

A bit of on-the-job training can go further than manuals or formal
training. There should be formal training, but the extent and scope of
    it should be re-examined.

Hi Larry,

I recently (April) did the IMCS course (Implementing and Managing Customer
Solutions) which uses DPM as part of the process.

If this is an example of the quality of courses in the general DPM space,
then I think you've done well. An excellent course, highly recommended.

Do you have a course number for IMCS?
